Hart House has been a cultural hub
for the University of Toronto and the
community for the past century. Serving
both campus and community, Hart
House provides opportunities to explore
and expand both personal artistic skills
and a connection to the vibrant creative
community that exists on campus and
throughout the city. Examples include:
• The Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at
Hart House, part of the Art Museum
of the University of Toronto, organizes
and presents an intensive year-round
program of exhibitions and events
that foster innovative research,
interdisciplinary scholarship, and
knowledge of Canadian art and its
histories at a local, regional, and
international level.
• Hart House Theatre supports
educational opportunities and
workshops, provides volunteer roles
on and off stage, facilitates student
theatre opportunities, and delivers
annual semi-professional theatre
productions in artistic partnership
with others seeking to reflect diverse
stories and communities.
• Hart House clubs, committees and
classes offer intensive immersion in
music, film and photography.
NIGHT OF IDEAS
On January 25, 2018, Hart House and
the Art Museum co-hosted the first
Canadian edition of this French-initiated
global, all-night, multi-disciplinary, multisensory
event focused on an annual
theme of global relevance. The Night of
Ideas was first launched in London in
2012 and Berlin in 2014 by the Institut
Français and the Cultural Services of the
French Embassies. The 2017 edition was
presented simultaneously in 50 places of
culture and knowledge across the globe.
The topic of focus for the Toronto Debut of
the Night of Ideas was “sleep.” Beginning
at 7 pm and lasting until dawn, Night of
Ideas brought 2,000 people into Hart
House to mingle with artists, writers,
historians, philosophers, neuroscientists
and other restless minds to explore
all aspects of sleep. Designed around
the Art Museum’s exhibition Figures of
Sleep, this gathering included awardwinning,
internationally recognized
writers, researchers and performers.
