Pete Devries
The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo mark
a milestone for board sports with the inclusion of
skateboarding and surfing disciplines to the games.
Not only does this provide opportunities for Canadian skaters
and surfers to get support, training, and facilities, but it
also legitimizes the sports in the eyes of the general public.
Skateboarding and surfing have lived happily under the
radar for years, but have been used mercilessly in corporate
advertising with the lion’s share of profits going to large
corporations while athletes earn a fraction of that of athletes
competing in more traditional sports.
Their inclusion into the Olympics gives young athletes more
opportunities to pursue and improve at their passions while
also getting the privilege to represent their homeland in front
of the entire world. In every Ukeedaze issue leading up to the
games we will feature an athlete who is a favourite to represent
Canada in either skateboarding or surfing. This issue’s athlete is
Pete Devries.
A household name in Canadian surfing, and likely the first
person that comes to mind during your travels when you tell
people you're from Canada and surf, Pete Devries is a Canadian
surfing legend. From being the first Canadian to win a QS event
(6 star, and on home turf at that), making the finalists of Taylor
Steele's critically acclaimed Innersection video, getting featured
on the cover of Surfer magazine, and recently placing 11 th place
and narrowly missing the finals for the ISA World Surfing
Games, Pete has accomplished a great deal in his surfing career.
We were able to get a hold of him to ask some questions about
his accomplishments and the potential for him to represent
Canada at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Road o 2020
Pete Devries
Ukeedaze: How old are you and when did you start surfing?
Pete: I'm 35 years old and I started surfing when I was seven.
Ukeedaze: When did you realize you could do this for a living?
Pete: I didn't think surfing was going to be an option for me as a
profession until after high school. I took a year and a half off to
travel and surf before going to university, and at the end of that
time my sponsors offered me professional contracts to continue to
do it full time.
Ukeedaze: Who did you look up to growing up?
Pete: Locally I looked up to Raph and Sepp Bruhwiler in the water.
They were the guys pushing performance and I was able to watch
them a lot through my teenage years. Videos were a huge influence
for me. Taylor Steele films with all the best guys in the world are
how I really learned about where I wanted to go with surfing. Slater,
T. Knox, and Rob Machado were some of my early favorites.
Photo: Douglas Ludwig
such a small part of what I have been doing for the last 12-15 years.
I would have to say the Surfer Magazine cover. Covers don't mean
as much as they did in the world of Instagram, but when I was
growing up covers and spreads in magazines were the best thing a
free surfer could do. The O'Neill Cold Water Classic win was a big
moment as well, especially considering a Canadian hadn't won an
international event before.
Ukeedaze: You were able to carve a niche out as a free surfer
traveling to off the beaten path destinations. Is there any part of
you that wonders what type of damage you could've done had you
gone the QS route?
Pete: I think in any career and life you can have those "what if"
moments. Sure there is part of me that wonders, but in saying that
I feel I didn't actually get anywhere near to the level of competing
on the WQS until I was in my late 20's. I did events every year in my
late teens and early twenties and I never did that well. It was those
years of free surfing and working on my surfing that led to the
Coldwater classic win.
Ukeedaze: What are your thoughts on wave pools and have you
tried one yet?
Pete: I think it's neat and cool that wave pools are a thing.
Make them bigger and they would be really fun. For me the
unpredictability of the ocean is what makes surfing surfing. I
haven't tried one yet.
Ukeedaze: You've travelled to some remote places in search of surf.
Where was your favorite trip to and why?
Pete: I've had so many great trips it's hard to choose just one...
Scotland is a favourite, New Zealand, Alaska...I would go with
Scotland though. With Ben Gulliver, Noah and Mark Mcinnis, we
got barrelled pretty much every day for two weeks with an epic
crew.
Ukeedaze: Has being a father changed your outlook on surfing?
Pete: I wouldn't say it has changed what surfing is for me, I'm still
motivated and dedicated to improve in the water, but there are
definitely times when I surf less than I did in the past. Surfing with
my son is something I love and look forward to.
Ukeedaze: Are you doing anything differently in preparation for the
2020 Games?
Pete: Competition is such a small part of my surfing life, it's not
something I think about very often. I'm always continuing to work
on my surfing, but I'm more focused on getting good waves this
winter than contests.
Ukeedaze: Shout outs?
Pete: Thanks to my family! All my supporters and sponsors. I've
had some great backing from companies that have been with me
for a very long time. Hurley, Monster Energy, Reef, Ocean Village
Resort, Aftanas Surfboards, Zeal Optics, Clif bar, Hydroflask,
Storm Surf Shop, Sobo Restaurant, Nixon, Bn3th. Thank you to
all the filmmakers and photographers who I get to work with also.
We've got such a great talent group here for such a small area. •
Ukeedaze: We asked Mathea Olin the same question and she said
you were an inspiration. How does it feel to know you've inspired
two generations of Canadian Surfers?
Pete: I'm at the point in my career where it's nice to look back
and also look to the future of Canadian surfing. There are a lot of
young kids coming up surfing well, and I think there are only going
to be more and more following. To be a part of that is something I
am proud of.
Ukeedaze: You've had some big accomplishments in your career,
what are you most proud of?
Pete: It's funny whenever you think of accomplishments as an
athlete you think of competitive results, but for me contests are
Ukeedaze: Besides surfing, what else are you passionate about?
Pete: I'm a big sports fan and I've got a son who is into a bunch
of different sports. I love getting out there and doing all the other
sports I used to do as a kid.
Ukeedaze: What advice would you give to the younger generation
of up and coming Canadian surfers?
Pete: Surf because it is fun and because you love it! Don't get
caught up with results and enjoy the process of improving as a
surfer. I also think if you are really into it and you want to improve
you need to treat it like school. Study video of your favourite
surfers and of yourself and use your brain to put the pieces
together.
Ukeedaze: What are you passionate about?
Heather: I am passionate about life. I am blessed to have called the
West Coast my home base for over 13 years now. Island life has an
amazing energy to it.. As a dedicated surfer, being surrounded by
the ocean and playing in the surf is where I feel alive.
Ukeedaze: What inspires you?
Heather: I love to paint. The power, magnificence and beauty of the
ocean is one of my greatest inspirations, and most of my paintings
are waves. My art is vibrant and full of expression.
Ukeedaze: Besides art what else do you love to do?
Heather: I teach yoga locally at both The Studio Ucluelet and
Coastal Bliss in Tofino. I love to make people feel good and to
empower them on their path to self-healing.
Ukeedaze: Where can people see more of your work?
Heather: To see more of my art visit my website
Ukeedaze: I've seen you do some cool performance art involving
fire; how did you get into that?
Heather: I have studied both massage and yoga internationally
and am also a massage therapist, yoga instructor, and fire dance
performer. World travel , movement, and the human body have
strongly influenced creativity in my life. I feel once we tap into our
creativity, it can be applied anywhere we choose.
Ukeedaze recently welcomed Simon
Young to its team of riders. Simon
is a ridiculously tech skater with
casual style and a hefty bag of tricks.
Check out these videos to see Simon's
Ukeedaze video parts, and another video
recapping a recent trip across Vancouver
Island and down to Seattle and back.
BEHIND THE SCENES
DREAMING OF SUMMER PHOTO SHOOT
BuqhkZ4mIsU
As Winter's icy grasp sets in
across Canada, we often sit
back, reminisce of the summer
past, dream about escaping the cold and
enjoying the warmth of the sun.
This past summer, we coordinated with
photographer, Cory Osborne, and stylist
Oakley Stevenson to give our readers a
taste of summer in the middle of winter.
We hope to entice readers into making the
journey to see what summer on the west
coast has to offer. Curl up under a blanket
and let our swim wear shoot help keep you
warmth through the dark winter season.
The above is one of the last pictures taken with
this beautiful landscape. Recent logging in the
area prompted massive amounts of road work
and tree clearing to accommodate additional
logging truck traffic along Kennedy Lake. As
a result, these alders, which used to provide a
beautiful tunnel-like canopy no longer exist and
the scenery of the area has changed.
