Kite aerial photography (KAP) is photography generated 

by lifting a camera into the sky through use of a kite. The 

camera is triggered either remotely or automatically to 

take aerial shot and can be attached directly to the kite, 

but is usually secured to an adjustable rig suspended from 

the kite line. With this elevated view, pilots can capture 

landscapes, objects, architecture, and people in entirely 

new ways. The beginning of KAP dates back to the late 19th 

century. Aerial photography from kites is, in fact, one of the 

oldest forms of remote sensing of the Earth´s surface. 

The KAP Foils developed by German kite enthusiast Ralf Beutnagel are reliable 

and very stable lifter kites for a camera rig. They have been used successfully 

since 2006 and have impressed many Kite Aerial Photographers by their flight 

characteristics. The wind range of the KAP Foil is fairly wide. These kites perform 

very well even in ground winds. Even KAP Foil 8.0 is more than sufficient 

to carry heavier cameras in light winds. In stronger winds, all KAP Foils fly very 

stable without slipping sideways.

With 25 years of experience in the development and production of innovative sport kites, the 

"HQ Sportkites" brand has a large community of fans worldwide. 

Every year, we invest considerable funds in our development work. Our stunt kite models are 

developed at our site in Rastede/Germany by a highly motivated and competent team that uses 

lots of practical know-how in the design of new models. 

We work according to strict quality standards. Our models are produced with high-quality 

space-age components and offer best performance and a fair price-performance ratio for 

dealers and end consumers in their respective classes. 

HIGH-TECH FABRIC FOR OUR KITE SAILS 

The decisive quality features for a high-quality kite fabric are light weight, tear-resistance and 

a resilient coating. 

Ripstop-Polyester and Nylon 

Ripstop means fabrics that have been woven with a special technique and that are particularly 

tear-proof. Grid-like reinforcement threads are integrated into the thin fabric at distances of 

5 to 8 millimetres. Benefits of modern Ripstop fabrics are their extremely light structure, low 

wetness elongation and very high tear resistance. 

The most important fibre that is processed into Ripstop fabric is polyamide; the fabric 

produced with this is called Ripstop-Nylon. 

Polyester fabric is also processed into Ripstop fabric. Polyester takes up only little moisture, is 

highly UV-resistant, maintains its shape even when wet and can be coated very well. 

Transparent Mylar-Laminate 

Mylar-laminate is a high-quality layered composite that is produced of several layers. 

The core layer is made up of a highly resilient fibre fabric. The special benefit of Mylar is a high 

resilience and extreme form retention. Processing of Mylar film also gives any sail a particularly 

technical and high-quality look.

FRAME OF SPACE AGE COMPOSITES 

The frames of all “HQ Sportkites“ are constructed solely of state-of-the-art composites that are 

used in aviation and aerospace as well. 

Carbon Fiber 

Carbon fibers are a high-tech material that is particularly suitable for applications where a low 

weight is needed at a concurrent high stiffness. Carbon fibers are stiffer than steel, lighter than 

fiberglass and twist less easily. Kites with carbon frames therefore fly particularly precisely. 

Fiberglass 

The strength properties of fiberglass fibers correspond to those of metals, but at a much 

lower weight. Fiberglass fibers are also extremely flexible and break-proof. We use fiberglass 

specifically in the construction of beginners‘ stunt kites. With their “crumple zone“, fiberglass 

stunt kites will easily survive the feared crashes. 

Connection Technology 

In the connection technology of “HQ Sportkites“, we leave nothing to chance with our specifically 

constructed high-quality “HQ“ connectors. Form and material resist the challenges of any wind, 

weather and temperature. 

A BIT OF LINE SCIENCE 

Although the quality of the flight lines essentially influence flight performance and flying fun, 

quite a number of stunt kites are only equipped with moderate quality lines. “HQ Sportkites“, 

however, contain only braided flight lines of high-quality fibers.

Dyneema (Spectra) lines 

Their extremely thin, light-weight fibers with very little stretch make Dyneema the ideal lines 

for stunt kites. At the same weight, Dyneema fibers are much more tension resilient than steel. 

The minimum elongation of the material (less than 5%) ensures maximum control of the kite, 

while the very small line cross-section minimises air resistance. The surface 

of our Dyneema lines is very smooth, so that they will not block or even 

“saw through“ when turning in. The fiber is extremely resilient to abrasion, 

moisture, UV radiation and chemicals. Most „HQ Sportkites“ are equipped 

with hi-tech lines from Liros / Hamburg. Top quality - made in Germany. 

Polyester 

Polyester fibers are more cost-efficient than Dyneema. For “HQ“ beginners‘ stunt kites in the 

entrance price ranges, refined, braided polyester lines are used. The natural elasticity of the 

fibers is drastically reduced by the pre-stretching of the lines. Polyester fibers also permit a 

small line cross-section with a reduced air resistance. The remaining extension after stretching 

deflects wind gusts better than Dyneema does. 

Twisted or braided lines? 

In cheap “no-name“ kites, low-quality lines are often used that will twist very quickly. 

“HQ Sportkites“, in contrast, are equipped with high-quality closely braided line sets only to 

provide a trouble-free handling.

Manufactured from durable ripstop polyester and almost 

unbreakable fiberglass rods, Quickstep II is noted 

primarily for its sturdy design. The setup is simple, the 

flying properties are extremely docile. Quickstep II can

_Performance 

The Onyx offers riders a wide performance spectrum. Good lift and a lot of hangtime 

make the Onyx the perfect freerider. 

With the Onyx it quickly becomes clear how easy it is to access power, to jump or just 

to cruise. Even in difficult wind conditions, the Onyx shows an easy-to-control and 

good-natured behavior that never demands too much of the rider. 

Despite the low aspect ratio of the wing, you will find yourself easily moving upwind. 

The Onyx loves to cruise, but also carves neatly in the waves with a good downwind drift. 

Due to the deep shape of the kite with lots of sail at the center chord, the kite has a 

very high linear depower capacity as well as a wide wind range. Even in light winds 

there is always enough power on hand to get you on the water right away. The bar 

feel is perfectly tuned and you can always sense where your kite is. In flight, the Onyx 

keeps a stable course and simply absorbs any wind gusts. 

_Shape 

The Onyx has a deep-cut sail design that lends the kite enormous stability. 

The special position of the wingtips and a nose that is slightly pulled forward make 

any water re-launch child‘s play. 

Large Dacron reinforcements on the wingtips create a perfect balance in the center 

of the kite, avoiding a front stall tendency in critical situations. 

The 3-strut design is ideal for a kite meant to be both light and agile. The rigid 

structure prevents strong warping around the middle strut and gives the kite a more 

direct and faster spin, which results in a very dynamic riding style.

In designing the bridle, we placed great emphasis on keeping the bar pressures low,
