excited you’re thinking about coming to summer camp, and we’re hoping to excite you, too!
For more than 100 years, camping has been a cornerstone of what Girl Scouts do. We have two
summer camps that will inspire you to take the lead in an all-girl safe space where you’re free to
explore, learn, and have fun without pressure. While having exciting, girl-led adventures you’ll learn
about self-reliance, leadership, and perseverance.
Our camps are open to any girl, regardless of previous Girl Scout involvement. Whether it’s your first
time at camp or your fifth, there’s something new for you to discover in girl-led activities through
which the Girl Scout experience truly comes to life!
Let this camp guide be your compass, your arrow to point you in the right direction.
Why Camp?
camps spark confidence & . joy
WHEN A GIRL LEAVES HOME AND ENTERS THE
WORLD OF CAMP, SHE MEETS NEW FRIENDS AND
PEERS ON EVEN GROUND. As she sits around the
campfire, rides a horse, tries ziplining, or even snorkels
for the first time, something in her begins to change—
she gains a sense of pride by facing her fears, she grows
as a person by learning new skills, and becomes
stronger and happier by making new friends. She
comes home with a spring in her step and a new light in
her eyes.
Not a Girl Scout? Not a problem.
Whether she’s a first time camper or an
experienced adventurer, an outdoor enthusiast or a
creative artist, your girl will find her perfect program
at one of our camps. Just visit www.usaso.org and
click "girls, join now" and register to become a Girl
Scout. Once your daughter is registered as a Girl
Scout, she is welcome to enroll in a USAGSO
Summer Camp!
Our campers:
⇨ DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS
through our girl-led programming, with supportive staff
and volunteers by their side
⇨ DISCOVER A SENSE OF SELF
by participating in activities that build confidence
⇨ OVERCOME OBSTACLES
by challenging themselves to try activities they’ve
never done before
⇨ LEARN RESILIENCE
and gain a deep appreciation of the great outdoors
⇨ CULTIVATE IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS
by interacting with fellow campers and problemsolving
with a team
⇨ RELAX AND UNPLUG FROM THE EVERYDAY
while making lifelong friends
Attend as an Individual
She doesn’t need her troop to have a camp
adventure! Many girls visit camp on their own and
make brand new friends that stick with her for life!

Unleash your curiosity,
creativity, and courage
A Day at Camp
What does a typical day look like Camp?
Every day at camp truly is a new adventure. No two days are
ever the same. Campers will experience a variety of
activities while exploring the camp theme. All campers enjoy
traditional camp activities like swimming, hiking, archery,
arts and crafts, and much more! Whatever the adventure
holds, girls are sure to have a great time.
What will my Girl Scout eat?
Meal plans are unique to each of our camps, however, both
camps focus on providing healthy and well rounded meals
to campers. Make sure to notify us during registration if
you child has any dietary restrictions.
What are my Girl Scout's responsibilities at camp? Does she
have "chores"?
All campers are expected to participate in camp kapers
(chores) such as maintaining her living area, latrine duty, and
shower duty. Girls also participate in flag ceremonies, and
rotate responsibility for table setting, serving food, and table
cleanup. Girls are responsible for their own personal care
and grooming. These tasks provide an opportunity for girls to
develop independent living skills and a greater sense of selfreliance
and responsibility.
Can my Girl Scout bring a cell phone or electronic device?
Summer camp offers a great opportunity to learn about and
navigate social situations while not being constantly
connected to and immersed in a digital/virtual world. We do
not allow any electronic items such as iPods, cell phones,
tablets, e-readers, and smart watches and USAGSO will not
be responsible for the loss or damage to your child's
electronic equiment. Standalone digital cameras are a great
way to capture memories and are allowed at camp.
A Day at Camp cont..
Can my camper call home during the week? How do I get in touch
with my camper?
There is a no-cell phone policy at camp and campers are not
permitted to make or receive phone calls. We encourage
independence and self-reliance during camp. The Camp Director
will contact parents if a camper has a medical problem, is
excessively homesick, or has an emergency. In case of an
emergency, contact information for the Camp Director will be
provided to parents and guardians at check-in.
To stay in touch with your camper, parents are encouraged to
leave pre-written letters with camp counselors when they drop off
girls at camp. Due to the short duration of camp, this ensures the
camper will receive the mail. Please do NOT mail letters.
Who will be supervising my Girl Scout?
Camp staff and volunteers are enthusiastic and caring adults who
are selected based on experience, ability to serve as role models,
and their genuine desire to work with children. Some have worked
at camp for years or even attended camp themselves! The ratio
of counselors to girls varies with the age of the campers. Camp
units with younger girls will have the greatest ratio of counselors to
campers. All camp staff members are certified in First Aid and
CPR and have passed background checks. Training for staff also
includes the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE), safety,
activity programming, outdoor skills, emergency response, grade
level characteristics, team building, coping with homesickness and
helping girls make friends. Staff members who supervise
specialized activities are required to have additional training and
qualification.
How will health and safety be maintained?
The physical, emotional health, and safety of each girl is our
primary concern. Upon arrival at camp, parents must leave all
medications and a written set of instructions with the Camp
Nurse. Medication must be in the original container and labeled
with the child’s name and directions. The staff will follow the
directions on the label. Parents will be notified in the event of an
emergency and any time the Camp Nurse recommends that the
child see a physician. The Camp Nurse administers routine health
care and medication. The parent/guardian will approve over-thecounter
medication the camper is allowed to receive upon arrival.
VERY IMPORTANT: All girls, staff and volunteers are checked to
ensure that they do not have a fever, athletes foot, strep throat, or
head lice. Your child will not be allowed to stay at camp if she is
found to have any of the above.
About the Location
Camp Lachenwald will be held at the Youth
Oberreifenberg located in Schmitten-
Oberreifenberg Germany. Surrounded by forest,
this youth camp is a short walk from the ruins of
Königstein Castle and public pool. This camp also
has a ropes course on the property. Campers will
sleep dormitory style. Each dorm sleeps four to
eight girls in bunk beds and most rooms have an en
suite bathroom. This Youth Hostel includes
dormatory style sleeping arrangements, a kitchen,
and plenty of indoor and outdoor space for
activities. For more information about the facilities,
visit the Oberreifenberg Youth Hostel Website.
Youth Hostel Oberreifenberg
Limesstrasse 14
61389 Schmitten-Oberreifenberg
Germany
Camp Lachenwald
TRANSPORTATION
JH Oberreifenberg is located in Schmitten. A half an
hour car ride north of the Frankfurt Airport and 45
minutes north east of Wiesbaden. The camp is tucked
amongst castle ruins just steps from the Reifenberger
Wiesen nature preserve. Campers will need to provide
their own transportation to/from camp. A shuttle van is
available to pick-up campers arriving at the nearest
train station, Konigstein Bahnhof. Transportation to/
from the station must be reserved ahead of time by
completing the Lachenwald Transportation form found
in your Bunk1 camp forms.
FOOD
Meals are prepared by experienced cooks. Three wellbalanced
meals and snacks are provided daily. The girls
and staff may also enjoy cooking over a fire. Special
dietary needs or allergies must be noted in the camp
registration health form so meals can be planned
accordingly. If special dietary items are necessary for
medical or dietary needs, parents/guardians must bring
the items with written instructions for preparation and
present them at check in, to the Camp Nurse. Because
food in the living quarters attracts unwanted creatures,
no food, including candy, may be sent with campers.
ACCOMODATIONS
Girls are placed in dorms based on grade level. Each
dorm sleeps 4 to 8 girls. Each unit (made up of 2 to 3
dorms) has camp personnel who oversee health and
safety, general camp activities and the overall camp
experience. The staff do not sleep in the same dorms
as the campers. They are in close proximity and easily
accessible. Unit assignments are determined by Girl
Scout age level and number of campers. Campers will
find out which unit they will be staying in during checkin.
WEATHER
Camp can be cool and wet or rather warm at times.
Campers adapt to living in the summer heat by staying
hydrated, resting during the hottest part of the day,
and wearing cool, cotton clothing. Every effort is made
to keep the girls cool on very hot days and our daily
plans consider the weather and summer heat. In the
event of severe weather, girls are moved to shelter
according to the camp’s Emergency Action Plan. In a
protected environment, the girls participate in
alternate “rainy day” activities that keep their minds
off the weather outside and focused on the fun inside.

completing the Tama Transportation form found in your
Bunk1 camp forms. If interested in riding a bus from a
nearby military facility, please let us know on the Tama
Transportation form. We may be able to arrange bus
transportation from local military installations if enough
campers are interested.
FOOD
Meals will be prepared by the Tama Hills Recreation
area as well as by the Girl Scouts. Each Girl Scout is
assigned to a unit and bunk where some of the week's
meals will be prepared by the girls. Girls and Volunteers
will also have the opportunity to cook outdoors. Three
well-balanced meals are provided daily, and snacks and
beverages are available at all times in the cabin
kitchens. Special dietary needs or allergies must be
noted in the camp registration health form so meals can
be planned accordingly. If special dietary items are
necessary for medical or dietary needs, parents/
guardians must bring the items with written instructions
for preparation and present them at check in, to the
Camp Nurse. Because food in the living quarters attracts
unwanted creatures, no food, including candy, may be
sent with campers.
ACCOMODATIONS
Girls are assigned to tents based on grade level. Each
tent sleeps 3 to 5 girls. Each unit (made up of up to 5
tents) has camp personnel who oversee health and
safety, general camp activities and the overall camp
experience. The staff do not sleep in the same tents as
the campers. They are in close proximity and easily
accessible. Unit assignments are determined by girl
scout age level and number of campers. Campers will
find out which unit they will be staying in during checkin.
WEATHER
Camp can be hot and wet though may feel cool in the
evenings. Campers adapt to living in the summer heat
by staying hydrated, resting and staying indoors during
the hottest part of the day, and wearing cool, cotton
clothing. Every effort is made to keep the girls cool on
very hot days and our daily plans consider the weather
and summer heat. In the event of severe weather, girls
are moved to shelter according to the camp’s
Emergency Action Plan. In a protected environment,
the girls participate in alternate “rainy day” activities
that keep their minds off the weather outside and
focused on the fun inside.

from the Counselor’s perspective
ARE YOU READY TO START YOUR LEADERSHIP
JOURNEY? Do you dream about working at Camp
someday? Are you looking for leadership
opportunities? Do you want to serve as a role model
and mentor for younger Girl Scouts? You can do all
that while earning your Counselor-in-Training (CIT) I or
Counselor-in-Training (CIT) II award!
Through USA Girl Scouts Overseas there are
opportunities at resident camp. Girls can help prepare
our next generation of leaders through training in youth
development, group dynamics, safety and outdoor
living. There is also hands-on practical experience
working directly with younger girls.
The CIT program is designed to teach participants the
basics of developing and delivering camp programs, as
well as information on camp operations–perfect for
aspiring camp counselors!
Mentor younger girls in a camp setting as you build skills toward becoming a camp counselor. Girls will complete a
CIT Leadership course and basic life and outdoor skill course. After being assigned a CIT Mentor, Girl Scouts will then
spend approximately 2-3 hours of each day leading a unit of girls in outdoor experiences. During the remainder of
their camp day, CIT I Girl Scouts are led by a CIT Volunteer leader and will participate in camp activities.
CIT II Track (pre-requisite: CIT I Award)
CIT II Girl Scouts will complete a CIT Leadership refresher course while reviewing basic life and outdoor skills. Each
CIT II Girl Scout will then be assigned to a program area (such as archery, hiking, art, and riding) and CIT II Mentor,
who they will work with throughout the week to lead girls and develop skills in their specific program area.

Tips for Setting your Child up for Success
Girl-led
Give your daughter a sense of ownership by involving
her in the planning process. From registration to
packing, let her take the wheel in learning about and
making decisions.
Get Excited!
Help her get excited about camp: Take her shopping
for new gear and encourage her to focus on fun things
about camp that she can anticipate.
Listen
Don't trivialize her concerns. Instead, show that you
have empathy and acknowledge any worries she may
have.
Practice
A shorter-term sleepover or a night at a relative's will
make it easier for your child to be away from home.
It's okay to wait. While it is normal to be
excited or even nervous for camp, it is okay to
wait another year if your daughter is not yet
ready for an entire week away from home.
Is your daughter ready for camp?
While every child is different, here are some signs that may indicate your child is ready for camp.
She is excited about going away to camp for the length of that session.
She is excited and comfortable with making new friends.
She is able to keep up with her belongings and keep her things reasonably straight.
She is capable of showering, dressing, and doing her hair.
She can make her own bed.
She is able to spend the night away without anxiety.
She is able to control emotions reasonably well, even when things don’t go her way.
She is able to share the time and attention of her counselor with other girls.
She is flexible about eating a variety of food.
She wants to come to camp, and you are confident that she will have a great time!

Outdoor Progression
The camp setting provides the perfect environment for girls to
try new things and develop skills in a safe and supportive
environment, and continue to level up and challenge
themselves. A girl who attends camp multiple years has the
opportunity to advance each year in an activity she loves,
while continuing to have unique experiences each summer.

Financial Assistance
Information
Camperships
Girl Scouts Overseas is committed to ensuring every girl
has the opportunity to participate in camp. Financial
Assistance, or “Camperships”, are available on a firstcome,
first-served basis for USA Girl Scouts Overseas
registered members whose financial circumstances
might otherwise prevent them from attending camp.
How do they work?
In order to apply for assistance, you must register and
pay a deposit to hold your spot, then apply for your
campership via our online application. Financial aid
applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling
basis, or until funds are exhausted. Although funds are
limited, we strive to provide enough support so no girl is
denied an outdoor experience due to lack of funds.
Financial assistance funds are supplementary. USAGSO
encourages each family, troop and community to
contribute as much as possible toward the cost of Girl
Scouting. Individuals should seek assistance from the
troop and community prior to applying for financial
assistance.
Eligibility
Awards are based on financial need and/or special
circumstances at the girl level, not the troop level.
Applications must be completed by the individual and
any applications submitted on behalf of the troop itself
will not be accepted.
HOW TO SUBMIT A DEPOSIT
AND REGISTER FOR CAMP
We require a $50 deposit to hold your camp spot while we
process your application for financial assistance. If the
deposit is a barrier to registration, please contact our
Customer Care department at
overseascustomercare@girlscouts.org.
If you submit the $50 deposit and we do not award the full
amount of financial assistance that you requested, you may
cancel your camp reservation and request the return of
your deposit.
Your refund request must be submitted in writing by
July 1 overseascustomercare@girlscouts.org.
applications for financial assistance:
Our goal is to provide an answer by June 1 about whether
you have been awarded financial assistance and, if so, how
much. If your application is incomplete, we’ll notify you of
required additional information.
BE A CAMP CHAMPION!
If you believe that going to camp is a valuable way to
increase self-confidence, leadership skills, and a sense
of accomplishment, please consider donating to
USAGSO by visiting our website and selecting "GIVE".
At times, a family may not qualify for financial
assistance under the income guidelines, but may
have extenuating circumstances that the council will
consider when determining eligibility and award
amounts. In that case, the circumstances must be
clearly explained for consideration.
Families who have received financial assistance in
previous membership years will not be guaranteed
financial assistance for future membership years.
