Welcome Letter
Welcome to Volume Three of Charmed Magazine, the award-winning
publication from Radcliffe Jewelers. Our Publisher, Lindsey Jacobs, has once again
created an amazing collection of stories and photographs that take you inside the
world of fine jewelry and watches. Charmed aims to introduce you to some people in
our lives that we love professionally, personally, and for the community service that
they provide.
If you want to put an immediate smile on your face, stop reading this
welcome letter, turn to page 96 and look into the eyes of just a few of our clients
who shared their engagement photographs with us. In the They Said Yes pictorial
featured on three pages, you can visually interpret the purpose of our business.
That purpose, simply stated, is to help our clients mark the special moments in their
lives with an expression of love in the form of a treasure that has lasting value and
meaning.
Turn a few more pages (to page 108). In the Engaged article, you will get to
know a few of our clients that got engaged this year in. Through their own pictures
and words, they share their thoughts on love, relationships and the future. We thank
these special couples for their openness and for including us in their wedding journey.
We also take time to celebrate some great women in our lives. Girl Bosses
puts the spotlight on some special leaders in our industry and in the community.
Their stories are inspiring, motivating and powerful.
2018 was a very special year for Radcliffe, as we moved our Towson location
after more than 30 years. Our new store at The Shops at Kenilworth is bright, easily
accessible and features Rolex, Cartier and David Yurman shop in shop environments.
Clients are loving the design, the ease of parking and the location of the store in the
center. We are thrilled to be joining the other best in class local tenants like About
Faces, Ruth Shaw, South Moon Under and others.
We love the center so much that we partnered with two other local merchants
to open Forwardmoda, a fashion boutique featuring designer women’s clothing
and upscale women’s shoes as well as our vintage handbag collection. Forwardmoda
is a unique style boutique that is not to be missed. Stop in and check it out.
Enjoy Charmed and remember that shopping locally is good for you and for
the community.
We love partnering with local businesses in the Baltimore area.
When Chad Gauss, award-winning chef of The Food Market & La
Food Marketa, came to us with an innovative photo shoot we
couldn’t help but jump on the opportunity. Instead of running his
usual ad in this very publication he wanted to “bling” his team of
talented chefs out in jewelry and watches from Radcliffe. Here are
some behind the scenes shots of that photo shoot. Check out the
final product on pages 82 and 83.
Improving Our
Community & Our World
If there is one common thread that seems to
run through Debra Silberman Weinberg’s life, it
is the overarching sense of community.
For it is her love of community that defines this Baltimore
native, and it is community that motivates her to give back.
Raised by parents who were dedicated to uplifting those
around them, Weinberg credits their values with making
an indelible imprint early on. Eugene and Sandy Silberman
were active in their four daughters’ schools and held
leadership roles with numerous Baltimore nonprofits,
including The Associated: Jewish Community Federation
of Baltimore. In fact, it was through The Associated that
they officially met, during the organization’s G-Day,
a fundraising day in which women went door-todoor
asking for donations to The Associated’s
Annual Campaign.
“My parents were determined to improve
our community and our world,” says
Weinberg. “Volunteering speaks to how
we were raised.”
Landing in Israel as a teen in 1976, Weinberg
was caught up in an historic moment that
would ultimately broaden her understanding
of her role as a global citizen. The date was July
4, and she would soon learn that the country had
completed a daring mission in Entebbe, Uganda, saving
nearly all the passengers who were held hostage on an Air
France flight to Tel Aviv.
“It’s hard to explain the passion we felt that day. It made me
realize that we are all connected, and it became important
to me that Israel remain an integral part of my life.”
That connection proved stronger during her trip as she
stood in front of the dining hall at K’far Silver in Ashkelon,
which would later become Baltimore’s sister city. It was
there that she saw a plaque with the names of Baltimore
Jewish philanthropists. On that list, was her grandfather’s
name.
38 Charmed 2018

“Here I was, a world away, and there was this connection to my home in
Baltimore,” says Weinberg. “It had a profound effect on me and the impact
I wanted to make.”
It was this bond to Israel, and later through her work at Jewish Family
Services (now under the umbrella of Jewish Community Services) where
she helped resettle the 1,200 Jews arriving from the former Soviet Union,
that she realized that helping others globally only strengthened her own
self-identity.
Later, as executive director of ACHAR AI: The Shoshana S. Cardin
Leadership Development Institute, Weinberg found a mentor in Cardin,
the organization’s founder. She also served as the director of The Darrell
D. Friedman Institute for Professional Development (DFI) at the Weinberg
Center, helping to build leaders for the future.
Following her parents’ lead, Weinberg became involved with The
Associated, sitting on its Young Leadership Council, and chairing a number
of committees, including the Israel and Overseas, as well as Community
Planning and Allocations committees. Today, as The Associated’s Chair
of the Board, Weinberg is proud that she can continue her work to build a
strong Jewish community.
“People often come to me when they are facing difficult times. For
example, I was recently asked about how to help an older adult, who
experienced financial abuse and I referred them to CHANA, The
Associated’s agency that supports abuse and trauma survivors. I
also connected people who lost jobs to The Associated’s network of
organizations, including Jewish Community Service and CHAI, to help
them get back on their feet.
“I am so grateful I can provide them with a number for where to turn.”
One of Weinberg’s most memorable moments came years ago, when she
was newly married to her high school sweetheart, Joe. It was then that her
mother-in-law, Lillian Weinberg, gave her the gift of becoming a Lion of
Judah (see sidebar).
Being an Associated Woman and a Lion of Judah is meaningful to
Weinberg.
“I still treasure that moment. When she passed down the family legacy of
giving, it made me realize I had a philanthropic responsibility to give back
and make an impact.”
The lesson is not lost on Weinberg who wants to continue the philanthropic
tradition.
“I’m looking forward to passing down this legacy to my children, including
Lion of Judah to my daughters, making them Associated Women, so that
they too can make the world a better place to live.”
Jewish women are leading the charge in their local
communities as philanthropists and global activists.
In the federation system, they are contributing
millions of dollars collectively through individual
gifts in their own names.
The generosity of these women is acknowledged in
many ways, including through giving societies that
reflect the levels of support they are contributing.
None is more recognizable than the Lions of Judah.
Known for its distinctive gold pin, the Lion of Judah
giving society was created in 1972 by Norma Kipnis-
Wilson and Toby Friedland for the Miami Women’s
Division Campaign. The program was adopted
nationally in 1980. Today, Lion of Judah encompasses
17,500 philanthropists around the world.
The women who support their federation
campaigns at the Lion of Judah level are touching the
lives of the young, the old and the vulnerable in both
their home communities and in Jewish communities
worldwide.
In Baltimore, the Lion of Judah giving level begins
at $6,000. Women have the option to purchase the
Lion of Judah pin. The pin is an international emblem
of generosity and unites its wearers in a sisterhood
of concern and compassion. As women increase the
level of their giving, they are encouraged to add a
stone to their pins to reflect their increased gifts to
the campaign.
Every two years, Lions of Judah gather for an
international conference at which they learn about
the impact of their giving and hear from speakers
from a variety of disciplines.
Many of the women giving at this level ensure
that their generosity will remain a lasting legacy by
endowing their gifts. The Lion of Judah Endowment
(LOJE), which celebrates its 25th anniversary this
year, is a key part of the Lion of Judah program. By
creating a LOJE, Jewish women provide the funds to
meet needs at home, in Israel and around the world.
Lion of Judah is an integral part of women’s
philanthropy in communities across the country
and Baltimore is home to hundreds of women who
have embraced the important value of caring for
others.
Off the Cuff
with Julez
The designer behind the California-based jewelry brand, Julez Bryant, tells
us about her inspirations and how she got her start in jewelry design.
When did you realize you wanted to be a jewelry designer?
As a child I dreamed of being a wooden toy maker. I always loved to get my hands dirty. My mother could barely keep
me preoccupied so she thought maybe I could sit through an art class. After 3 hours straight she had to pull me
away. My fascination wasn’t with art per-say, but rather with the notion that humans could create anything. After
years of my corporate job I was given a gift from a friend that passed away. It had a little charm, so I repurposed
it into a necklace I could wear daily...that was the catalyst. The more I created, the more I saw the possibilities.
My grandmother always adorned herself with baubles and was born in a gold mine, perhaps it was always in me
because of her spirit. I began right at the time women began to self purchase and for some reason my designs
resonated with women. That joy and empowerment women have gained from our little treasures continues to
inspire me. Julez is my nickname and Bryant was my grandfather’s and my son’s middle name. Gia my daughter is
also designing now, it’s exciting to see the brand evolve.
45 Charmed 2018

What is your inspiration?
My inspiration usually starts with a sketch or
doodle. If there is a pen or scrap of paper I doodle.
I sketch in every city I go to. I’m fascinated by the
findings on buildings, the color of the rust and age of
parts that keep the buildings together. Between the
ocean I live by and the cities I love to visit, somehow
an organic structural piece forms. What makes our
pieces special is the simplicity and imperfections of
the metal.
Who are your fashion icons and role models?
My fashion icons would be Isable Marant. I appreciate
her vision, her ability to create feminine androgynous
clothing. There is a strength in her designs and yet they
are so sexy, wearable and relevant. Coco Chanel for
forging new territory in the world of fashion. Despite her
challenging childhood she persevered. I don’t love the style
of her work, but I respect it very much. I can’t say I have a
specific role model, however I try to model myself and our
company after humans that pull their boot straps up, work
hard and try to do the right thing. I’m not impressed with
things, but rather the journey to getting the things.
What would you be doing if you weren’t in the jewelry
business?
If I weren’t in the jewelry industry I would most likely own a
business in a different industry. I love being a part of a team.
Something perhaps in medicine, research, or stats OR living
a crazy life going to war-torn countries and being a part of
different cultures. Money doesn’t drive me, smart business and
thinking drives me.
What’s in your personal jewelry box?
My children are my most precious loves, so I wear a bracelet my
daughter Gia gave me and a ring my son made. I’ve started to collect
work by designers whom I adore and respect. My grandmother’s opal
cuff is very special to me.
What can we look forward to in 2019?
2019 brings new adventures, new designs and new partnerships. Each
year we grow and I believe Julez Bryant is really hitting its stride. I try
to stay grounded and never rest on our laurels. Be fresh and relevant
while continuing to be a trusted brand. I hope to have Julez Bryant forge
new territory for high-end fine jewelers. To bring artisan jewelers to the
forefront of the future of this industry. We are so excited to be a part of
such a well respected company like Radcliffe.
Your friends at Radcliffe share their
favorite jewelry & watches.
Cleo Bracelet
by Marli NY
Amy G.
I love the MARLI NY Cleo slipon
bracelet in 18 karat yellow
gold with white agate caps.
It’s stackable with the
Deco cuffs, lightweight and
affordable. It comes in seven
colors or all diamonds!
Lunaria Necklace
by Marco Bicego
Heather K.
The Lunaria collection by Marco Bicego
is one of my favorites. Its simple elegance
and sophistication is timeless. To make this
gorgeous diamond necklace more “daytime”
just flip it over and you will have a beautiful
two-tone necklace!
Black Ceramic J12 Watch
by Chanel
Lauren D.
My favorite piece is the 38mm
black ceramic Chanel J12 with
diamond dial. The Chanel
timepieces are classic and
effortless. Perfect from the
beach to the symphony. Truly
affordable luxury.
Gatsby Earrings by Messika
Shelly F.
Dressed up or down, these diamond and pink
gold earrings by Messika are simple, elegant
and sexy. I love the way they move and they
are lightweight and easy to wear.
Princess Flower Earrings
by Roberto Coin
Jeff J.
I love these earrings because
they look great on, whether
you have short or long hair.
The precious twisted 18
karat gold that surrounds
the diamonds are a perfect
complement.
RENDEZ-VOUS DAY & NIGHT by Jaeger-LeCoultre
Susan M.
I love watches and wearing this JLC timepiece is like wearing a piece of art, a
mini machine and functional jewelry all wrapped up in one. This watch has over
200 parts and a 40-hour power reserve.
It has timeless sophistication and can be worn from day to night. The diamond
bezel is not overpowering, thus giving the watch an understated richness. The
day & night complication gives the watch two different looks. It’s like having
two different watches for the price of one. I recommend getting a second color
strap right away, since the interchangeable strap system makes it so easy to
change yourself and gives the watch more longevity.
Meet
Jessica Smith
Founder of Forwardmoda
Forwardmoda is a unique boutique. Forwardmoda
is the go-to place in Baltimore where you can pick
up a great new dress, top, sweater, pair of jeans,
sporting a tag in the neckline from a designer not
commonly found in the area. Forwardmoda is a
one-stop-shop offering women in the area a large
collection of sought after vintage designer bags,
just a hint, Chanel and Hermes… while slipping
your foot into a new pair of red bottoms, yes,
Christian Louboutin shoes at a more affordable
price.
No, Forwardmoda is not a consignment store. The
only “pre-owned” items are the handbags, and
that is a big IF they were even used.
Clothing was all hand selected by me. I spent
lots of time in New York City at showrooms and
shows getting to know a lot of the major high-end
designers and staff.
What is the inspiration behind the store?
I recently had a baby and was a stay-at-home-mom. I wanted to figure out
a way to be at home and work at the same time. So the idea of opening a
women’s e-commerce website stuck for some time. Eventually I purchased
a domain, got all the necessary paper work done and voila…I had an online
store!
I had no intentions of opening a brick and mortar location since I have
a baby at home, but I ran into one of the employees at Radcliffe during a
Target run and was sharing my idea. She reached out to me days later and
proposed this great idea to collaborate with Radcliffe and Amuze. Things
just came together so fast, I could not say no.
How did you get into the fashion industry?
I have always been obsessed with fashion. My late father, owned a business,
and he was so particular about how much time we spent away from it. To
make up for the lack of family vacations, we often went to King of Prussia,
DC, or Tysons Corner on the to go shopping.
What do you like most about The Shops at Kenilworth?
It is small, boutique-y feel with great little shops!
What fashion trends are you obsessing over right now?
Leopard, vegan leather, cashmere, and winter whites! I also like the flared
leg jeans!!
What fashion trend are you over?
Boyfriend styled denim.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Shop, haha, and of course spending time with my adorable little girl,
Anastasia.
Welcome
to the
A showcase of Radcliffe’s newest brands
The team at Radcliffe scours the globe to bring the best jewelry and watch brands to
Baltimore. We are excited to introduce the latest additions to our showcases.
Alexis Bittar
Alexis Bittar is the eponymous name of the jewelry
brand founded by 2010 CFDA Accessory Designer of
the Year, Alexis Bittar. Best known for hand-carved
lucite bangles, Bittar’s elegant, yet bold creations
have been sought after since their discovery in
1992. The care that goes into creating every style
reflects the brand’s belief that the pieces are to be
viewed as collectible, modern heirlooms that will
stand the test of time and trends. While undeniably
luxurious, with many designs featuring precious
metals and semi-precious stones, the brand’s
work is accessible, unique and attainable. Luxury
in this case is in the design details, the quality of
materials, and ultimately the way the pieces are
cherished and worn.
Julez Bryant
Julez started her creative journey in 2003 in San Diego, California. As the director of a technology company, she developed a strong intellect
for business acumen. Her sense of ambition and creative drive was redirected when a dear friend, who later lost his life to cancer, gave her a
charm. “He taught me to capture life and run with it,” says Julez. Julez’s creative exodus started when she converted the charm into her first
design. Since then Julez Bryant has grown from modest beginnings to one of the most sought after fine jewelry brands. Julez Bryant was built
on the foundation and belief that women should always feel empowered and sexy in what they wear. Twelve years later, Julez and her skilled and
seasoned team continue to hand-forge each piece in her design studio along the Southern California coastline. The collection combines Julez
love of bold shapes with luxe materials such as 14 karat and 18 karat rose, yellow, and white gold with a purposeful sprinkling of diamonds and
semi-precious stones. As a natural and ambitious risk taker, Julez continues to grow the company by adding new branches to the brand. Julez
daughter, Gia, joined her side three years ago. Together they created their newest design venture, “The Metro Collection”. This addition is Julez
and Gia’s homage to September 11th while exploring the light-filled windows of the NYC skyline. Together, the mother-daughter duo maintains a
hands-on approach to all customers and the retailers carry the brand. Julez and Gia aren’t here to be a ‘one hit wonder’; their mission is to create
a jewelry box that lasts a lifetime. Each season, Julez challenges herself to create pieces that are both relevant and fresh, while still maintaining
a sense of timelessness and class. Truly one-of-a-kind, Julez continues to cultivate a jewelry line that inspires women. Julez invites you to follow
her creative journey, as it promises to be an exciting one.
Spinelli Kilcollin
Pasquale Bruni
Spinelli Kilcollin is a luxury jewelry company based and manufactured in Los Angeles,
CA. The company was founded by designer Yves Spinelli, in 2010. Yves Spinelli was born
in Honolulu, the son of Italian hairstylists. His introduction to the fashion world came
through his father Antoine Spinelli, who spent time between Hawaii and New York
City working alongside renowned hairstylists Paul Mitchell, Garren Defazio and Roger
Thompson in the 70’s and 80’s. Yves studied jewelry in high school at Punahou. After
moving to Los Angeles in 1997, he began his career in luxury fashion working at the iconic
boutique Maxfield, moving up to store manager and top salesperson of Maxfield Bleu
from 2005 – 2009. After years of working at Maxfield with some of the best designer
collections in the world, Yves was inspired to start designing jewelry. In a marketplace
of ornate and figurative jewelry Yves yearned for something clean and architectural. He
created a set of linked rings of different thicknesses which could be worn a number of
ways – spread across three fingers, or stacked on one. From this first set he immediately
began taking private orders. Spinelli Kilcollin launched their first group of interconnected
Galaxy Rings at Maxfield, and began incorporating diamonds into their collection. In
2012 they made a custom linked ring for Ikram Goldman with 5 carats of diamonds,
and immediately garnered national press and the attention of luxury retailers. Spinelli
Kilcollin continues to develop their voice by combining a contemporary minimalist
aesthetic with intricate craftsmanship and materials, aspiring to become a dominant
voice in the luxury market.
Pasquale Bruni has been creating, for two generations, stunning jewelry for women all
over the world. Every creation is a blend of the nobility of metal with the richness of the
gemstones. Each piece is made by hand in a workshop in the heart of Italy, where every day
he brings his craft, spirit of independence and experience to the study and development
of collections. The work he performs is the expression of a “Vera Passione”, a true passion
which anyone wearing Pasquale Bruni’s jewelry can feel. Creating a company recognized
worldwide for the excellence of its craftsmanship and unique designs. Pasquale Bruni
has epitomised quality. Along with his daughter Eugenia, Creative Director of the brand
since 2001 and his son Daniele, now the CEO of Pasquale Bruni USA. Nature is a source
of inspiration and women its true muses. The creations reflect a love of freedom and the
freedom of women. Jewelry of dynamism, expression and passion takes shape, revealing a
constant desire to experiment. What comes across is a desire to imbue the jewelry with a soul,
so that the soul is truly visible.
As Queen Bey says…”Who run the world? Girls!”
From the office to the jewelry bench to the stage, these 12 women are
leaders in the their field and are making an impact in our community.
Jill Brown
Professional Stunt Woman
Jill Brown performed her first stunt at just three years old when she jumped off
the three-meter high diving board (orange, arm floaties and all). Jill claimed
she was bored in the shallow end.
Jill attended Arizona State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts
in Communication and Sport Psychology. She minored in beer and tanning.
A mutual friend introduced Jill to East Coast stuntman George Aguilar urging
her to become a stuntwoman due to her exceptional athleticism. George and
his stunt team took Jill under their wing and trained her in all facets of stunt
performance and eventually stunt coordinating.
Due to her comedic sensibilities, Tina Fey approached Jill while shooting an
episode of “30 Rock.” Tina promoted Jill to stunt coordinator the remaining
six seasons. Jill went on to coordinate Ms. Fey’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
(Netflix) and Great News (NBC). Continuing in the comedy field, Jill also stunt
coordinates/ed, Young Sheldon, Fuller House, Blunt Talk, Grace and Frankie,
Trial and Error, American Woman (just to name a few) making her one of the
few female stunt coordinators in the country…a position she hopes will open
up to more of her female colleagues.
Jill was nominated for an Emmy in 2015 and again in 2017 for BEST STUNT
COORDINATOR FOR A COMEDY for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
She is a two time WORLD STUNT AWARD WINNER for her work on TA XI (2005)
and THE CELL (2001). Jill has also been nominated four times by the Screen
Actors Guild for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble
in a Motion Picture for The Amazing Spiderman, The Bourne Legacy, The
Adjustment Bureau and I Am Legend.
Jill is also a comedy writer and wrote for such television programs as Wipeout
(ABC), Killer Karaoke (Tru TV) Spell-Mageddon (ABC Family) as well as
Refinery29, The Huffington Post, Film School Rejects and MTV News.
How did you get started in your career?
When I was three years old I decided I had enough of splashing around in the
kiddie pool with the other babies. I was restless. I was bored. I wanted more for
my life. I marched my mini sausage legs over to the deep end of the pool and
climbed the ladder of the high diving board. I hiked up my orange arm floaties,
waddled over to the end of the plank and stared down into the chlorinated void.
I was scared and thrilled all at once. This was happening.
I jumped. It was awesome. I belly-flopped. It wasn’t awesome. A floatie flew
off. It was missing in action. I bobbed in the water, crying hysterically trying to
stay afloat. I could barely make out my mother’s screams, but finally someone
rescued me and brought me to the deck. My mom swooped me up and held me
close. Eventually I pulled away, wiped my tears and turned to her, “Can I go
again?!”
Twenty some years later when David Shulman, (my physical therapist who
treated me for multiple sports injuries) suggested, more like insisted I get
into stunts, I was intrigued. He previously treated an up and coming stunt
coordinator out of DC and made the introduction. As luck would have it, this
stunt coordinator ended up being one of the most sought after action directors
in the country. He had a team of stunt men who trained me and taught me the
ropes of the business. We’re still close and still work together some twenty-five
years later.
What inspires you?
Collaborative creativity, boldness, fairness, open minded people, intelligence, nature,
hiking, biking, and being lucky enough to work with extraordinary people.
Who is your role model?
My father, Stanley Brown, instilled in me that if I work hard and do what I love, a
fulfilling career will follow. Hear that YouTubers?
My father also taught me how to safely jump off the jungle gym at a very early age.
Who knew it would come in so handy years to come?!
How do you give back to the community?
Come to think of it, not enough.
Since my business is predominantly male and when I say
predominantly, I mean “ALL”, I try to mentor younger
stuntwomen so they too can eventually segue into
the management position of stunt coordinating.
What is the one piece of advice you would
give young girls today?
Just as there will always be people who will
keep you down to make themselves feel
higher, there are also people who will
lift you up to watch you shine. Gravitate
towards the lifters of the world and
shine on.
What is your favorite thing to do in
Baltimore when you visit?
Play hide and seek with my
nephew, listen to music and hit the
downtown shops with my niece,
check out any new gold hoops (my
thing) at Radcliffe and of course this
goes without saying, eat all things
crab related. I mean it’s astounding
the amount of crab I eat when I’m
home. It’s also common knowledge
in my family that I can take down an
entire Ledo’s pizza. No pepperoni left
behind.
save the bees and spread awareness behind the decline in the honeybee population.
The Tiny Hearts collection is near and dear to our hearts and will honor the Babies
Heart Fund within the Pediatric Cardiology Department at the Columbia Medical
Center. Partial proceeds from sales from the collection will be donated to further their
invaluable, lifesaving work. Also, Myriam is ver y involved in the industr y. She is on
My dad. He was an inspiration to me – born to immigrants from Norway, he lead a
wonderful life – combining faith, work and family – compassionate, yet strong --- he
was a prosecutor at the Nuremberg War Trials, an attorney and an executive --- he
brought out the best in people by being an example to all.
How do you give back to the community?
By being involved as best I can – I have served and still serve on various boards– Greater
Baltimore Cultural Alliance, for example, an organization that is doing so much for our
arts and cultural community ……. And it’s often times the one on one interactions that
are the most rewarding.
What is the one piece of advice you would give young girls today?
Don’t be afraid to fail …Develop resilience …and don’t care what others think!
Tanya Farah
Designer of Tanya Farah jewelry
In the ten years since Tanya Farah has launched her collection, her
feminine, easily wearable, and exquisitely detailed designs have
struck a responsive chord among retailers and customers alike.
Farah understands the need for simplicity and elegance. “Women
want jewelry with designs that are understated, creative, unique,
and manage to express their individuality. They also want jewelry
that accentuates their beauty and yet works on all levels of their hectic
lives.”
How did you get started in your career?
This is a fun question!! I actually had a completely different career
prior. I earned my Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology at 25 and then
from there began consulting for corporations. Although I enjoyed what
I was doing, I still felt a piece of me was missing. Originally from another
part of the world, and moving to the US with my family at a young age,
I formed a huge sense of independence. Being new to a country and
essentially starting a new life with my family, there was a feeling
of determination to make it here. This independence
and determination would help me begin to unveil
my true love, I not only wanted to be my own
boss, but I wanted to share my family’s story.
One of my earliest and fondest memories is
seeing my mother wear my madar bozorg
(grandmother’s) jewelry from our country,
Iran. Seeing these jewels, I felt a piece
of histor y was being passed down from
generation to generation, and eventually
the jewelr y was passed along to me. The
art of story telling from jewelry fascinated
me – I soon found myself taking jewelry
classes and an apprenticeship to then
begin my true passion as a jewelry designer.
When did you know that you “made it”?
I never feel I made it. Every time I accomplish
the goals I set, I get motivated to reach higher to
accomplish another. I always feel there is so much more
to learn and to understand. The process of ‘making it’ to me, is a
continuous effort of learning throughout life and to never stop achieving
your goals.
What do you like most about working in the jewelry industry?
Because we manufacture in the US, every time we finish a piece I know
it has passed through the hands of many different people. Our jewelers,
stone setters, beaders, casters, all come from different parts of the world
and the moment when our piece is complete, a sense of unity surrounds
the design. Our team includes people born and raised in the US as well
as artisans from Turkey, Ecuador, Italy, China, and Egypt to name a
few. Each individual puts their own creative mark on a piece which
essentially you can say traveled to many different parts of the world
and is then delivered to our clients.
What inspires you?
Historical females & movements are a huge part of where I draw my inspiration.
I dream of what these women’s’ day-to-day life was like. What they wore. What
they experienced. What they saw & thought. One movement that has inspired
a number of my designs is the suffragette movement. Over & over again I see
these strong women putting their lives on the line to give a stance for their
daughters their granddaughters and the future for women in general. These
women deserve recognition, and also for us, as a society, today they inspire us
to continue the fight.
Who is your role model?
I have a few, but my number one is my mother. She put our family first and gave
up many things for her children. As a strong woman she overcame prejudices
and, along with my father, made a new life here in America. She also made sure
that her children were given every opportunity to succeed in life. We ate, then
she ate. We slept, then she slept. She enhanced our education, then she herself
at the age of 55 enhanced her education-graduating top of her college
class. To this day, her graciousness, generosity and strong will
pours out. She constantly amazes me.
My customers are also my role models. Ever yday I
am in awe of the amazing women I am fortunate
enough to meet. The incredible life stories and their
accomplishments I hear from my customers is truly
a blessing and an inspiration.
How do you give back to the community?
As a mother of two fabulous children (of course
I have to say that), I believe being a positive role
model is vital in parenting. We all live in a world
that is a beautiful place. Everyone no matter where
we are in life; it is one’s responsibility to give back
in some way. Volunteering at local programs and
charities is a huge part of my family’s day-to-day
activities. This fall I am embarking on a new volunteering
path in NYC, which is mentoring young women after
school. I look forward to speaking about the life lessons I have
experienced, but I am excited to learn from these young women as well.
What is the one piece of advice you would give a young girl today?
Never stop believing in yourself. Don’t let anyone, anything, any event or
situation give you limitations. Take everything you learn and experience in
life as an opportunity because these are the building blocks for your future.
Look at failures as gifts. They hurt a lot when they happen, but without them it
would be hard to find your path to success.
Alysha January
Marketing and Development Manager of
Historic Charles Street Association,
Host of GalPal Events
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff
& Lisa Phillips Frankel
Designers of Phillips House jewelry
Alysha January is the Marketing and Development Manager from the Historic
Charles Street Association and co-owner of Busheler’s of Baltimore. She is an
activist who is very passionate about creating equality, inclusion, and diversity
throughout the community. She created a blog and Instagram account called
Discover Charm City to highlight Baltimore’s small businesses, local food scene,
and her personal life-style. Alysha wants to show others how to live, work, and
play in Baltimore. Alysha also host women empowerment events she calls,
GalPal Events. She invites women to come connect with other women from
the community in a safe open environment. She was most recently selected as
one of Baltimore Sun’s 25 Women to Watch in 2017. She has lived in Baltimore
for seven years.
How did you get started in your career.
I’ve tried a couple of different career paths, but I’ve consistently had a passion
for helping others and promoting things I love. I enjoy social media and
marketing but never really thought I’ d be able to do it full time, but then an
opportunity presented itself and I jumped.
What do you like most about working in Baltimore?
I love that I get to live, work, and play in Baltimore. I am the marketing manager
for Historic Charles Street Association where I work with large stakeholders and
small businesses along Charles Street. I live right off of Charles Street too in Mt
Vernon where I do pretty much all of my socializing. It’s awesome living so close
to my job. I walk to work or take public transportation almost everyday and get
to support local businesses daily.
What inspires me?
I get inspired by others, especially other creatives, in the world trying to make it.
It takes a lot of hard work and discipline to make your dreams come true and it
excites me when I see people doing big things. It motivates me to keep pushing,
keep praying, and having faith that whatever I want out of life I can make it
happen.
Who is your role model?
My Momo (Grandma), Vernie Ruth Burton is my role model. I’ve never met anyone
as selfless as she. Her faith has guided her and gotten her through difficult times
throughout her life. She is kind, reliable, and a true pillar in her community. She
is always first to offer to help and never complains even when she is beyond
exhausted. I look up to her. I continue to strive to be more like her.
How do you give back to the community?
I try to support and promote small businesses as much as possible. Also, when
I host an event I typically have a community outreach component added.
Whether its a donations drive, community service opportunities, or shining
light on a local small business; I try to help where I can.
My GalPal Events allow me to create a safe place for women to come together
and connect. I think that counts as giving back to the community too. When
women connect to other women it creates a positive community which allow
individuals to open up, tr y new things, see new places, and step
out of their comfort zones.
What is the one piece of advise you would give
young girls today?
Make sure your girl gang consist of women who
uplift you. If you don’t feel loved, motivated,
and encouraged by your group of friends,
then those aren’t the people for you.
Playfully irreverent high fashion design and a classically chic
aesthetic, Phillips House designers Lisa Phillips Frankel
& Danielle Frankel Nemiroff have paved the way for a new
category of fine jewelry. Phillips House has expanded into top
retailers across the world, graced the pages of nearly every
magazine to note -- including the famed cover of Women’s Wear
Daily -- and landed on the steps of Buckingham Palace as the
sole jewelry designer worn by the former First Lady to her historic
meeting with the Queen of England and Kate Middleton.
How did you get started in your career?
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff – I have been watching my mom from a very young age,
creativity was something that was respected and nurtured in our house growing up. I went
to a performing arts camp and knew from a young age that I wanted a career that would
allow me to express my creativity every day. After college, I joined my mom and we began
designing together.
Lisa Phillips Frankel – My career grew very organically. My seeds were a passion for family,
a love of celebrating memories and a craving for a creative environment. Growing up I did
countless apprenticeships on the bench and went on to study gemology in business school.
When did you know that you “made it”?
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff – I don’t know if I will every feel like “I made it,” but every time I
see someone on the street wearing one of our pieces I feel so honored. I still get butterflies
in my stomach every time!
Lisa Phillips Frankel – Landing on the cover of Women’s Wear Daily was truly a pinch me
moment. I will never forget that phone call, I was speechless!
What do you like most about working in the jewelry industry?
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff – I love getting to work with such fine materials.
Lisa Phillips Frankel – Jewelry is an international language, it is appreciated by people all
over the world and goes across generations.
What inspires you?
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff – I have always had two real loves in my life – fashion and dance.
I was in the Miami City Ballet for 15 years and there gained my affinity for accessories and
for movement, which we incorporate in all of our designs (for instance, you will never see a
large stiff earring in our line). I have also always had a great love for fashion. I love to sit on
the floor of my closet ever y morning and just consume ever ything that the fashion world
has to offer – I have been doing this my whole life!
Lisa Phillips Frankel – Architecture is something that has fascinated me from a young age.
I love to see how things are built, with a juxtaposition of functionality and beauty.
Who is your role model?
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff – My mom, her work ethic and desire to never accept the status
qou. She is always pushing the envelope further and further, her creativity is endless.
Lisa Phillips Frankel – My role models are my friends and family who continuously show
me love and support every step of this amazing journey.
How do you give back to the community?
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff & Lisa Phillips Frankel – We are very involved with supporting
research for rare disease, including specifically SCN2A mutations.
What is the one piece of advice you would give a young girl today?
Danielle Frankel Nemiroff – Explore, have different experiences so that you can see what
feels most natural to you and then go out and pursue it.
Lisa Phillips Frankel – Follow you passion and don’t take anything for granted.
Kristin Finkelstein,
Kate Mumaw and Maya Ammons
Co-Founders of ShareBaby Inc.
ShareBaby was founded in November of 2014 by three local moms who wanted to
meet the desire of mothers to share their new or gently used baby items with the
families that need them most. ShareBaby began collecting from friends and family
and storing donations in their basements and garages. By the summer of 2015,
they had distributed more than 14,000 items to children in need. In August of 2015,
ShareBaby started Baltimore’s first diaper bank to meet this specific deficiency in
public assistance to mother and babies.
Since then, with the help of an army of volunteers, significant contributions from the
local community and the support of national partners, ShareBaby has been able to
significantly increase its impact on diaper need and material hardship in the lives of
families with young children across Baltimore City.
ShareBaby has set the goal of distributing 2 million essential items to Baltimore’s
neediest young children by the close of 2019. At the same time, we hope that this
expanding reach will enable us to further inform and effect change around the very
serious issue of diaper insecurity.
How did ShareBaby get started?
In November of 2014, we started ShareBaby as a small community project. We love
Baltimore, but know that so many people living a few miles down 83 are living very
different lives. It just didn’t make sense that on one end of town, a new mother may
have 3 baby showers and more “stuff ” than would ever be needed and just down the
road, there is a mother who has to choose between buying baby food or buying diapers
for her baby. With ShareBaby, you know that your stroller or outgrown diapers are going
directly to a child in your community. You can literally help a child today and together
we have the potential to make Baltimore a better place for every single parent and child.
What do you like most about working in Baltimore?
We love the sense of community. Hundreds of Baltimore area families volunteer with us,
host drives and donate items! We find that coming together in acts of love and service
brings people together from all parts of the city to unite on one thing that we all have
in common- caring for our children.
What inspires you?
We are inspired and deeply humbled by all the parents whom we have met through
ShareBaby who show such grace, courage and compassion in the face of extreme
hardships. Being a parent in any circumstance is the most difficult job in the world,
but to meet a mother or father who is fighting to do everything for their child in the
most difficult circumstances inspires us to keep working harder to help spread love
and kindness in the community.
Who is your role model?
We are all lucky to have wonderful mothers as our role models. Each of our moms
are strong, smart and independent women who raised us to believe that we could do
anything that we set our minds to. When we came up with the far-fetched idea of an
organization that could provide essential items to all of Baltimore’s needy children, it
was our own mothers who were first in line to cheer us on!
What is the one piece of advice you would give a young girl today?
In a world where you can be anything, first and foremost be kind and share love.
Penny Preville
Designer of Penny Preville jewelry
Penny finds inspiration for some of her collections in vintage jewelry. Stars and moons,
flowers, feathers, and garlands are among the motifs that highlight necklaces, earrings,
bracelets, and rings. The flip side to the poetic pieces are designs with clean geometric
lines and polished surfaces, all of which define a more modern focus.
While the designer adds splashes of colorful gems and pearls to her exquisitely made
jewelry, diamonds, in all shapes and sizes, are the main component in the collections.
“Diamonds are the fairytale stone,” says Penny.
The beauty of the designs blended with fine craftsmanship and Penny’s eye for details,
results in heirloom quality jewels that women will put on and never want to take off.
How did you get started in your career?
I graduated college with a fine arts degree and had always enjoyed making leather, feather,
and beaded jewelry for my friends and family. After college, while living in NYC, I took jewelry
making courses at the uptown Y, and proceeded to put together a small, precious metal
collection. During that time, I also worked in a small retail jewelry store assembling sterling
pieces.
When did you know that you “made it”?
In the fall of 1978, I was honored with the New Designer of the Year Award at the JA New
York Show. Wow, what a feeling – I
knew we were headed in the right
direction, gaining recognition from
top independent stores and meeting
and befriending many wonderful
customers from all over the country.
My first significant accounts also
included department stores like
Bloomingdales & Henri Bendel.
What do you like most about
working in the jewelry industry?
It’s a very special and gratifying
process to picture something in
my mind and bring it to a reality.
It’s my pleasure to put my creative
ideas on paper, work with talented
model makers, and assemble the
raw materials, all so as to generate a
gorgeous piece of jewelry as the end
result. The progression of my original
thought to a piece of actual jewelry that someone treasures and values is so rewarding.
What inspires you?
SO MANY THINGS! From fashion to the cosmos, I am passionate about my broad range of
interests. I put a lot of energy into staying up to date with trends of accessories, jewelry and
clothes – I also can delve into historical jewelry books and never come out! The mystical
powers of the universe inspire me - moons and stars are at the top of my list right now.
Who is your role model?
My mother, Joyce, is turning 92 this year and getting her BA degree from college! She has
always been inspiring to me, not only as a mother, but also as a woman. She taught me that
you can do anything you want if you have the desire and focus. That’s how I design, and
the way I express myself. My mother helped me discover the road to fulfill my motivations.
How do you give back to the community?
We love partnering with our retailers on events and with donations to support their local
charities – children and animals have a special place in my heart, so I leap at the chance to
help out with related fundraisers.
What is the one piece of advice you would give a young girl today?
Find something that you love to do and GO FOR IT. If you’re passionate about what you do, it
will never seem like work. I adore being a designer, a woman making jewelry for other women.
Seeing customers happy and hearing their stories help give me the drive to keep going.
Phillips House:
Shattering the Traditional View of Fine Jewelry
Phillips House designers Lisa Phillips Frankel and Danielle Frankel
Nemiroff started Phillips House with the goal of launching a brand
focused around the modern woman’s lifestyle with comfort and
versatility built for every day wear. This philosophy has served as the
basis for the duo’s designs since the launch of the brand in 2010.
“Every day is worth celebrating, which is why we design pieces that are
meant to be worn all day, every day, in every way” says Danielle. “You
would never really keep your Phillips House pieces in a jewelry box,
waiting for a special occasion, because you are going to be wearing them
and enjoying them every single day. “
Phillips House’s Affair collection embodies this philosophy, celebrating
the different affairs that the pieces can be worn to: a breakfast affair,
a formal affair, a dinner affair and more. Featuring gold and diamonds,
each piece allows great versatility both in function and in styling options.
“Within our Affair collection, the Infinity necklace, named Infinity
because it is edgeless like an infinity pool, has always been one of my
favorite pieces,” says Lisa. “The Infinity necklace was born out of the
need for the perfect every day piece. We wanted to design a necklace
that had an endless amount of sparkle, while also having the ability to
layer and mix with other pieces. Available in four different sizes, there
is a look for everyone.”
The Love Always bracelet, named one of the top ten most iconic cuffs
by Harper’s Bazaar, is another signature item from Phillips House and a
staple in any wardrobe. The button closure on the bracelet pays homage
to one of Lisa’s most cherished childhood memories of her mother
buttoning up her coat and kissing her before sending her off to school
each day.
Phillips House: Shattering the Traditional View of Fine Jewelry
Hero collection earrings
“Each bracelet is engraved Love Always with room to add
an additional complimentary engraving,” says Danielle. “I
love that you can add a personal message hidden inside, For
example ‘Dear Bob, Happy Anniversary! Love Always, Lisa.’
We have seen so many different engravings, from birthdays,
to wedding proposals, to a grandmother writing all fifteen of
her grandchildren’s names, the stories are endless.”
The Hero collection, celebrates the unique and varied facets
of a woman’s personality that combine to create a beautiful
and magical whole. Each woman has her own unique sides
that come together to create who she is: a mother, friend,
teacher, designer, dancer, partner, advocate, mentor.
For Lisa and Danielle, versatility is a must when it comes to
designing jewelry for the every day. “Many of our pieces can
be worn several different ways,” says Danielle. “Our Pick-
Me-Up earrings can be transformed from a short earring
to a long statement piece with just a flick of the wrist, our
flexible Hero bracelets can be hooked at multiple points to
adjust the size in seconds, our Infinity enhancer earrings
have six different ways to wear them, our Revolution pieces
can be worn both as rings and as necklaces, the list is
endless!”
Phillips House shatters the traditional view of fine jewelry.
Instead, the pieces become a part of your everyday routine,
they become a part of who you are.
Jewelry
Care Tips
Caring for your jewelry is important.
Here are some tips to remember.
Live by this rule: Last on, first off. Jewelry should be the
last thing you put on after you get dressed and the first
thing you take off. This way you won’t break a necklace
when removing a sweater or shirt. Hairsprays, lotions
and perfumes can be harmful to some gemstones. Make
sure you put on your jewelry after spritzing and spraying.
Never put your jewelry in your checked luggage.
Always pack it in your carry on so it’s with you at all
times.
Remove jewelry (especially rings) before
showering, exercising, cleaning or cooking.
Make sure your jewelry is insured.
Fine jewelry should be checked every 6-12 months to ensure gemstones are safe and prongs are secure.
Stop by either Radcliffe location for a complimentary analysis of your jewelry.
IWC Tribute to Pallweber
Edition “150 Years”
Limited Edition Watch
In 1884, IWC manufactured the first
Pallweber pocket watch. These
timepieces showed the hours and
minutes in a digital format with
large numerals on rotating discs. 150
years later, IWC honors the Pallweber
pocket watch with the Pallweber
Edition “150 Years” watch in 18 karat
red gold.

Ask Erik
You see a lot of vintage and pre-owned
timepieces pieces. What’s the most unique
watch you’ve seen in person?
We are blessed to have been in the watch business
for decades at Radcliffe. Over this time, we have
seen so many great pieces pass through our doors.
The ‘most unique watch’ that has come in has
changed pretty regularly...that is until earlier this
year. We had an original, unpolished, vintage Rolex Daytona in
14 karat yellow gold with an exotic Paul Newman dial. Since the
auction of Paul Newman’s personal watch in late 2017, which
brought over $15.5 million, vintage watches have been more
in the news, subsequently accumulating a new following of
folks ranging from passive observers to passionate investors.
There were less than 400 of the 14 karat gold Daytona made
between 1966 and 1969, and who knows how many were lost
or destroyed over the years. That such a rare and sought-after
piece was on-hand to try on, share with
local connoisseurs, and examine in
extreme detail was a joy and not
likely to be repeated.
What is a tourbillon escapement and what makes it
different from other watch escapements?
The tourbillion was designed and developed by the
father of modern watchmaking, Abraham Louis
Breguet, in the late 1700s. When the tourbillion
was introduced, it was not only a beautiful
addition to the movement, but one highly necessary
for accuracy due to the lack of precision capability in
cutting and manufacturing of the parts of a watch
movement and the rudimentary oils being used. Modern
watch manufacturers can cut gears with a thousandth
of a millimeter tolerance, a hundred times more accurate
than gears of yester year. The tourbillion escapement rotates
inside of the movement in an attempt to negate the effects
of gravity that adversely affected watches at the time by
shifting the oils and the escapement. The lever and co-axial
escapements, used by the vast majority of timepieces, are
fixed and do not rotate. With the advances in manufacturing
techniques, varieties of oils, and specialization of metallurgy;
the tourbillion is now just a show piece to demonstrate the
haute horological prowess of brands.
How do I read the Power Reserve Indicator on my new timepiece?
Ask Erik
Power Reserve indicators vary depending on the watch and the manufacturer. There are a few rarer pieces like the
Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reserve Reverso, which displays the amount of days of power reserve remaining in a
separate aperture. Most watches use a more traditional retro-grade display in a semi-circle display, in a descent
to zero. These displays are often on the dial, but many pieces in recent years have taken to keeping the dials less
crowded by displaying the indicator on the case back.
Should I invest in a watch winder? If so, what do you recommend?
The decision to invest in a watch winder will largely depend on the
size and complications of the pieces in your collection. With most
individuals owning less than two watches, the watches will
receive more than enough wrist time to warrant long stays off
the wrist. For these instances a winder would not be necessary,
but still a cool accessory to set on the bureau and relish your precision
instrument in rotation. For collectors with numerous pieces that include
complicated pieces with calendars more difficult to set, a winder is a great
accessory and pays for itself in convenience many times over.
We have worked with Orbita watch winders for over a decade and have
found the quality of product and staff there always to be of quality and
would eagerly recommend them to all.
Glossary
Dial: Disc or plate made of metal or another substance, inscribed with various markings, including obvious
indications for the hours, minutes and seconds. Uniquely varied in shape, decoration and material, they are
inscribed with numerals, figures, symbols, divisions and other information. Many high end companies use silver
as the base for their dials.
Movement: The assembly making up the principal elements and mechanisms of a watch or clock: the winding
and setting mechanism, the mainspring, the train, the escapement, and the regulating elements. Basically, the
engine which drives the watch.
Power Reserve: The time a watch will continue running based on the movement’s residual winding of its
mainspring. The vast majority or watches carry a 40 hour reserve, based on a shared mainspring common to
the swiss industry. Longer power reserves are often considered in the same light as a complication.
Tourbillion: A regulating device that cancels the effects of gravitation on the precision of a watch movement
by rotating the balance, lever and escapement around a single axis. The mechanism that even in its most
conventional version, is extremely hard to manufacture. A single master watchmaker would require 6 months
to complete a tourbillion. The least expensive tourbillion from a manufacture retails for over 40 thousand with
out any other compliaction.
Wearable
art
Jewelry and fine timepieces have always been considered
wearable art; a way for the wearer to invest and express
themselves. Jaeger-LeCoultre took the idea of wearable art
literally and highlighted the works of a famous artist on their
timepieces in a limited-edition series.
Jaeger-LeCoultre & Ferdinand Hodler
Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrated the work of Ferdinand Hodler
with a series of three Reverso watches. Both sides of each
piece feature reproductions of paintings by the Swiss artist
in engraving and enameling. The artisans spent more than
fifty hours on each watch reproducing Hodler’s paintings.
The release of these timepieces commemorates the 100th
anniversary of Hodler’s death. Hodler passed away in Geneva
in 1918. His depiction of Swizterland’s lakes and mountains
brings memories of the Vallée de Joux, birthplace of Jaeger-
LeCoultre.
Lake Geneva with Mont Blanc in the Morning Light, 1918 (74 x 150 cm)
For this oil on canvas, obtaining the exact same pink and gold morning light was
essential; it required a lot of effort. A light and very tender grey was chosen for the
front of the watch, harmonizing with the painting’s colors. As sky and lake seem to
blend, this painting’s interesting play of light was expressed through small spots of
color transcribing the landscape’s depiction of peace and quiet.
Lake Thun with Symmetric Reflections Before
Sunrise, 1904 (89 x 100cm)
This painting gives prominence to a brighter scenery,
the artisan’s work focused on the creation of blue
shades revealing the mountains. The way that the
transparency of the water lets the rocks appear in a
foreground of green shades is truly remarkable, and
it inspired the artisan enameller to seek out a pine
green color to decorate the dial on the front. Ferdinand
Hodler’s typical work on symmetry can be easily
identified through this enameled work.
Lake Thun, Symmetric Reflection, 1909 (67.5 x 92)
The third painting depicts the Alps mountains’ reflection in the
water catching the last day light. The mirror effect and the blue
and white shades’ softness call to mind the tranquility of Lake
de Joux. A translucent enamel in light sky blue was chosen to
cover the guilloché.
LUMINOR DUE 3 DAYS AUTOMATIC
WITH A DIAMETER OF ONLY 38 MM OR 42 MM, THE NEW
LUMINOR DUE 3 DAYS AUTOMATIC HAS THE UNMISTAKABLE
PANERAI DESIGN IN SIX NEW VERSIONS SUITABLE FOR
EVERY WRIST AND SITUATION.
The Luminor Due is the thinnest and most versatile of Panerai’s creations. Its elegant, logical
design, with pure, minimalist lines, is the result of a sophisticated technical reworking of the
historic Luminor design. This has transformed an icon of high quality sports watchmaking
into a new classic, suitable for every wrist and situation but always immediately
recognizable with its powerful Panerai identity.
Panerai presents the new Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic models, with the stainless steel
or red gold case, in sizes of 42 mm and – for the first time – only 38 mm in diameter. These
dimensions and characteristics make these watches extremely versatile, as does the
new range of colors for the dials and straps of each new model.
These new Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic watches are fitted with the OP XXXIV
Manufacture calibre, with automatic winding and a power reserve of three days,
the basic standard of Panerai’s movements. The dial design – with large luminous
figures in the purest Panerai style, small seconds counter and, for the first time in this
collection, the date window – ensures the legendary legibility which has been an essential
characteristic of the brand since the first example created in the 1930s. Mounted on the
caseband of all the models is the bridge device with lever which protects the winding crown
from accidental shocks, evoking the glorious history of Panerai watches, which lives again
today in this new contemporary interpretation.
The Casual Elegance Trend
Edward Steinberg, President
J S Edwards Fine Men’s Clothing
Blazer and Jeans
A growing trend for men has been the blending of two polar opposites. The
mixing of a sport coat or blazer and blue jeans. A blazer was traditionally worn
only with dress or smart casual trousers, while blue jeans were a weekend go
to gear. So how do you make them work together? Let’s begin with your jacket.
The classic “Navy Blazer” the kind that’s full in cut with gold buttons. This type
of blazer just does not cut it with the new quality denim that is slimmer fitting.
You need to pick a blazer or sport coat that reflexes today’s modern fashion.
Choose a jacket that has a softer look and feel. One that will pair well with a
newer more casual pant or jean. Jackets have become slimmer, shorter, and
softer. Fabrics for these newer modern jackets are being woven for the comfort
and style of today’s flexible fashion customer. These jackets are designed to be
for dressing up for work with a tie or for dressing down with the weekend casual
outfit. A fashion sneaker or chunky boot will help complete that weekend look.
Suits
The ideal modern suit for men combines some of the same
properties as the sport coats: softer, lighter, and slimmer. So
how do you pick that perfect suit that can take you from the
boardroom to the bar after work? Let’s first talk about fit. If
you have not purchased a suit in the last several years, you will
notice a big change to today’s style. Number one is the pants:
no more pleats, no more full baggy slacks. Second point is color:
from navy to the new “Mediterranean Blue”. With your new
modern suit, it’s now easier to bring a more casual side to your
outfit, to be worn with a tie for work or dress but yet having the
option to dress it down and pair it with a knit or casual shirt.
Combining new colors, textures and a slimmer looks gives you
that look that can be both casual and elegant.
The Ultimate
Engagement Ring
Guide
You found the one and now you are ready to pop the question.
We understand that as exciting as it is, buying an engagement
ring can be a confusing process. We’re here to help make the
process as smooth as possible.
The Lingo
Here are some key terms that might come
up when shopping for an engagement ring.
Carat
The standard unit weight for
diamonds and other gemstones.
Facet
The flat polished surfaces of a cut
stone.
Four C’s
The 4C’s refers to the four criteria
used for diamond grading and
certification –
Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut.
Girdle
The thin horizontal band that forms
the widest part of a diamond.
Inclusions
Natural birthmarks inside a stone
that can affect how light is dispersed
through the stone. Inclusions can
vary in size, shape, quantity, position,
and color.
Pavilion
The lower part of a diamond,
located between the girdle
and the culet.
Ring Styles
Solitaire:
A solitaire setting features one
single diamond. That diamond can
be any shape
(see diamond shapes below)
Three Stone:
A three-stone rings is just what
it sounds like… a ring with three
stones. Typically a three-stone
ring has two stones flanking a
larger center stone.
Halo:
A halo setting has smaller
stones set around a single
larger center stone.
Vintage:
A vintage setting usually features
ornate details in the metal work
such as milgrain or filigree
patterns.
Who says you need a traditional engagement ring with a diamond center-stone?
There are many choices to show your love.
Alternative stone:
Incorporate a birthstone or
favorite color into the engagement
ring by featuring gemstones that
complement the diamond.
Diamond band:
Propose with a ring made entirely
of diamonds. These rings usually
feature diamonds that are all the
same size instead of focusing on one
larger diamond.
Non-diamond Ring:
Or forget diamonds altogether. There
is no rule that says you have
to propose with a diamond ring.
Engaged
Four R adcliffe couples share their engagement stories.
Rob & Amanda
Where did you meet?
We first met in Ocean City, Maryland at Seacrets … of all places. We remained acquaintances but did not have
our first official date until a few years later.
Please describe the proposal.
We were spending Thanksgiving at my Aunt and Uncle’s house on Kent Island.
Before we sat down for dinner, Rob suggested that we take a family photo on
the water. We walked outside to a spot overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and
he had his sister take our picture. As his sister walked away, he pulled me
towards him and got down on one knee to pop the BIG question! Little did
I know, he had both of our families involved in his plan and even hired a
secret photographer to capture our perfect moment.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
The first thing we did after getting engaged is look back at the house
to find both of our families looking out from the porch in elation. We
went inside, hugged everyone and then rushed back outside for an
impromptu photo-shoot on the water with Rob’s photographer.
Have you picked a date? Venue? Theme?
We are getting married in September at the Evergreen Museum and
Library in Baltimore, Maryland. This was the first and only venue we
toured and we both knew immediately that it felt right.
What is something you and your fiancé like to do together?
We love hiking, playing with our dog Cooper, a good brunch and Friday
nights spent watching murder mysteries on TV.
Will you be taking a honeymoon?
We will be taking a honeymoon but not immediately following the
wedding. We are currently narrowing down a few destinations, but our
pick will certainly be filled with sunshine and plenty of “vitamin sea”.
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
Rob owns more shoes than I do!
Meagan + Trevian
Where did you meet?
York, PA while I (Meagan) was doing an internship for college.
Describe the proposal.
Trevian proposed on May 27th at my parents’ house in New
Jersey and it was super cute! I was talking to my mom and
dad while Trevian said he was going to the bathroom and
wanted to play a 2-player game on his phone and mine,
so I tossed him my phone because I didn’t feel like playing
(haha)!
I went down to the basement to grab dessert, but as
I turned the corner down the stairs I noticed Trevian
had just closed the bathroom door and the light was
off in the bathroom. So I asked what he was doing and
he tried to stay calm, but I could tell something was
going on. (I also noticed my parents had champagne all
over the house, which is unusual). But eventually, I went
upstairs.
A few minutes later, he came up from the basement stairs,
while I was turned around, and got down on one knee in front
of my parents and sisters. He tapped the back of my leg and
I glanced back, but didn’t see anything so I assumed it was
our dog brushing my legs, but he touched my leg again and I
looked and realized he was on a knee with a ring! We both got
teary-eyed. He even FaceTimed his mom from his phone, and
FaceTimed his dad from my phone - which was super sweet
that they were able to see the proposal happen! Perfect
proposal.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
Kissed and popped those champagne bottles!
Have you picked a date? Venue? Theme?
We decided on November 10th, 2019 and we are doing a
destination wedding at Secrets Cap Cana in Dominican Republic!
What is something you and your fiancé like to do together?
We love lifting together, eating sushi, trying new foods, binge
watching Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network.
Will you be taking a honeymoon?
If so, where and why did you pick that destination? Our
honeymoon is going to be at Secrets Cap Cana, DR after the
wedding! We knew we always wanted a destination wedding
because Trevian loves the beach and sun, and I love Fall - plus
November 10th is our anniversary and the US Marine Corps
birthday (Trevian is a marine)! So we get sun, fall colors, we get
to keep the original anniversary date, and the USMC birthday!
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
On our first date Trevian said he wanted me to be his girlfriend and my response was “RED FLAG! TOO SOON!” I
was a sassy jerk. I even told him it was too soon the following two times because we only knew each other for 1-2
months. Eventually he said he would have to adopt a dog for me to stick around (I volunteer with dog rescues
out here), and after I finally said “yes” to being his girlfriend he surprised me and adopted my favorite dog from
Central PA Dog Rescue - Neema! She was even part of our engagement pictures!
Morgan & Michael
Where did you meet?
Michael and I first met when we were 16 and 17 at a local hair salon where I used to
work. He was in getting his hair cut and I happened to catch a glimpse of him leaving
as he caught me saying something to my co-worker and he noticed. About a year later
he messaged me on Facebook to let me know he was in getting his hair cut but that he
didn’t see me. Fast forward ten years later… same hair stylist, different salon. We were both
getting our hair done on separate days and asked our hair stylist, who is also a close friend,
to set us up with someone. He put us together and the rest is history!
Please describe the proposal.
I thought it was just another Saturday night dinner out with our best friends. I worked that
day and Mike told me he ran in the Baltimore Half Marathon (which I later found out, was
not true). As soon as I got home from work, I quickly got ready so we could head over to the
Sagamore Pendry for dinner to meet the other couple. As we were seated at a window table,
my friend texted me saying they were running late. While we were waiting, a Pendry employee
stopped by our table and told us that Mike’s uncle called to let their team know we would be
dining there that evening and offered us a tour of the hotel. I didn’t think much of it because our
friends were running late so we had the time to spare. The lady showed us another bar area,
the lobby, and the courtyard and then told us she was going to show us the presidential suite.
The moment the door opened, I saw candles, flowers, balloons, and champagne. Michael then
walked outside to the balcony overlooking the harbor, got down on one knee, asked me to marry
him … and I said “YES”! Afterwards I looked over and saw my best friend (the one who was “late
for dinner”) peeking through the window taking pictures! Our parents came upstairs to join our
celebration and have dinner together before heading across the street to a local bar where we
had another big surprise: our best friends and family were waiting for us to celebrate!
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
The night we got engaged, we were surprised by our closest friends
and family at a local bar. The following morning, we had a surprise
brunch at his parents’ house with even more family and friends.
Have you picked a date? Venue? Theme?
We are getting married in November at the Park Hyatt in
Washington, DC.
What is something you and your fiancé like to do together?
We enjoy attending Orange Theory workouts, binge watching
TV shows, going on dates to our favorite restaurants (as well as
trying new ones) and relaxing on the beach.
Will you be taking a honeymoon?
Yes, we will be honeymooning in Southeast Asia / the
Maldives. We choose this destination so we could enjoy a mix
of relaxation and the beach as well as adventure.
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
We met in high school but ten years went by until we started
officially dating. We also love trying new restaurants
and are lucky enough to travel between Baltimore and
Charleston (because of Mike’s job) so we can really work on
expanding our list.
Kira + Jason
Where did you meet?
I joined Jason’s gym, Knockout Fitness, a studio boxing fitness gym in
Federal Hill. He was my trainer…I guess he liked how I worked out (Actually I
was the one that chased him!)
Please describe the proposal.
We were in Corfu, Greece at a resort called Ikos Dassia. We had just gotten
back to our villa after an amazing wine tasting (lots of wine and some
shots so I was feeling good!). We were driven in a golf cart back to our villa.
Jason took my hand and said, “come here.” There was a table set up with
champagne and rose pedals in the back by the pool. Right then I knew
what was happening. Jason got down on one knee and gave a speech and
proposed. My whole family was there hiding! As soon as I said yes and kissed
him, my family popped out and started cheering. It was perfect! My family
says it was like a scene from the Bachelor! HAHA.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
Well first, we drank champagne with the whole family, lots of it. Then we
went to a Greek restaurant at the resort to celebrate. And then a local tiki
bar to celebrate even more!
Have you picked a date? Venue? Theme?
September 2019. No idea where or what theme yet!
What is something you and your fiancé like to do together?
We both enjoy boxing/working out. We also love good food. We try to go out
for date night as much as we can! We love travelling too.
Will you be taking a honeymoon? If so, where and why did you pick that
destination?
We have been discussing but it’s not final – maybe Bora Bora/Maldives,
somewhere with huts on the water. Still up in the air!
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
Whenever we order drinks, the
bartender/waiter always gets
our drinks confused. I order the
hard stuff – bourbon,whiskey,
or martinis, and he always
orders pink fruity drinks. It’s
hilarious! The household
roles are reversed at our
house! He cooks, cleans &
does the laundry. And I’m
the one that takes out the
trash!
Krissy
& Billy
Photography by:
Lauren Myers Photography
Billy Doherty and Krissy Kunkel met in August 2010 in Arlington, Virginia. Both were starting new careers in a new city and happen
to live in the same townhouse complex. One August day, Billy was outside with his roommates and spotted Krissy walking into her
townhouse, hands full of groceries. They started to chat and soon enough Billy, Krissy, and their roommates were going to National’s
games and enjoying all that Arlington and DC has to offer young twenty-something. This was the beginning of a great adventure.
They lived together in Arlington for a few years before Krissy went to graduate school in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduation,
Krissy was offered a job in Baltimore and they decided to make the move to the suburbs of Maryland. It was here that Billy proposed.
Late one evening in April, they decided to go to dinner. Billy walked upstairs to put on his sports jacket; Krissy was puzzled as to why
he was getting dressed up. Not only that, she made seven wardrobe changes to match his outfit. When she came downstairs, Billy
was down on one knee and proposed. She immediately said yes!
The two married on June 2, 2018 at the Ayse Meze Lounge. With the help of Katie Milstone, of Andrea Leslie Weddings & Events they
brought the idea of an intimate Mediterranean inspired affair to Frederick, Maryland with an al fresco dining and entertainment
experience.
The day was marked with many special memories. Right before the ceremony it started to drizzle lightly. Krissy’s dad had walked her
down the aisle and the officiant was about to begin when “a dove landed right in the middle of the aisle and flew away. I felt that was
a little special omen.”
After dancing the night away the couple went on a mini-moon at the Salamander Resort and Spa in Middleburg, VA. They will enjoy a
honeymoon in Barcelona and Italy in late 2018.
Q &A
Merritt Miller and Rachel Rubin are
sisters and partners of Renaissance
Fine Arts and Merritt Galleries.
Their galleries’ collection is a diverse mix of
unique works from established to emerging
artists, from local artists to those halfway
around the globe. They invite you to join them
on a journey into the world of fine art.
Tell us a little bit about your galleries.
We kind of “grew up” in the business; our
mother started it over 30 years ago out of our
house. Over the first four years, she opened
our first two gallery locations and frame shop.
Five years later, we opened our third gallery.
Today, our collection resides in three galleries:
Renaissance Fine Arts in Baltimore, MD, and
Merritt Gallery in Chevy Chase, MD, and
Haverford, PA. We are constantly acquiring new
works, which keeps our walls ever-changing.
How would you describe your collection?
Our galleries house one of the largest
collections of fine art in the Mid-Atlantic
region. The artwork ranges from traditional
to contemporary, including original works
on canvas and paper to sculpture. Our
Master Works division includes original works
by Picasso, Matisse, Renoir and Warhol to
name a few.
What is the philosophy behind what you do?
We believe that art can alter your world.
We bring together a cultivated collection
of talented artists from near and far. By
supporting our artists, we allow them to do
what they love: create art. For our clients, our
goal is to help build unique collections or find
pieces that reflect their personality.
HoroscopeSeries
From ancient times to the present day, the stars in the sky have been used to make sure of past occurrences and
predict future events. Now, you have the chance to see what the stars have in store for you! Choose your sign
based on where your birthdate occurs and read what events are in store for your zodiac sign.
Aries (March 21 - April 21):
You may need some time to heal and recover from
a recent life event. This event in question was
planned to happen, however, the energy demands
on your psyche may have been too much for you
at this current time. Make some time for yourself
and, if you’re feeling up to it, call up an old friend
to reconnect with them, since they
will have some words of wisdom
for you. Eventually, you will
feel great relief that this
event did happen, and you
will be a better person for
experiencing it.
Taurus (April 22 - May 21):
Go ahead and treat yourself! All the hard work
you have put into a certain area of your life is
finally starting to have something to show for
it, whether it’s for a job or a
relationship. You have shown
great independence in the
hard work you have done,
however, make sure that
you haven’t alienated
or pushed away anyone
while focusing your time
and talents on reaching your
goals.
Gemini (May 22 - June 22):
You feel very secure at the current time,
whether it’s material or emotional in the
matter. Following a set pattern at the current
time is probably the best course of
action, since what has worked
in the past will once again
work in the future.
Cancer (June 22 - July 21):
You recently have made a serious decision
regarding the direction of your life. This could
be either regarding relationships, careers,
education, or family. Now is the time for growth
and opportunities. Plans have already been put
into practice, and there’s no turning back now.
Keep in mind that there may be someone that
you might need to forgive and
forget, whether it’s yourself
or another, in order to fully
break the ties to the past.
119 Charmed 2018

Leo (July 22 - August 22):
You have recently have had a difficult loss, whether
it’s a loved one, the end of a special relationship,
or an amazing opportunity. This loss can also be
the shattering of beliefs that you have once held
close. Carbon needs extreme heat and pressure in
order to form into a beautiful diamond,
so after the initial mourning period,
take this as an opportunity to
grow and improve.
Libra (September 21 - October 21):
You may have some information about yourself
that you want to keep hidden for now, and for
good reason. You may also feel that someone is
withholding key information about a situation
that you’re in right now. Take some time to
assess the situation. It may be one of your
fears that is causing you distress.
However, consider that you can
experience great personal
growth from facing, and
conquering, your fears.
Virgo (August 23 - September 21):
Take care to treat your acquaintances kindly.
You don’t know which one of them may grow into
a trustworthy friend. Also, make sure to stay
connected with close friends of times past. If you
haven’t seen them in a while, take some time to
call them up and invite them out. They
may have some news of a great
opportunity for you.
Scorpio (October 21 - November 22):
Be prepared to stand up for what you believe
in, since there may be people close to you who
strongly disagree with your beliefs, and a clash
may occur soon. You may hold beliefs that go
against the popular opinions of those that
surround you. Ask yourself what you truly believe
in and what you’re willing to fight for. Stay true to
the beliefs that you are willing to fight for, since
this will help you develop your
character and eventually gain
the respect of those around
you for being a person of
their word.
120 Charmed 2018

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 22):
You are either learning a lot about yourself or
another right now. Soon, you will learn about
a characteristic or a skill in either that will be
of great benefit to your personal development.
Continue to learn and observe others,
for you may uncover truths about
them which may help clearly
define the relationship that
you have with them.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18):
Right now, your head and heart may be pulling
you in opposing directions on a certain issue.
Remember that with either path you
take, you alone will be responsible
for whatever choices you make.
It’s also important to balance
the time that you give to
yourself with the time that you
give your loved ones.
Capricorn (December 22 - January 20):
Remember to count your blessings and think of all
the small things that make you happy when times
get tough. It may be an uneasy time for you right
now, however, you have and will experience great
luck as of recent. The past may have been much
harder for you, but with where you are at
right now, reflect and be thankful
for the steps that got you into the
position that you are in right
now.
Pisces (February 19 - April 21):
Now is the time to make your dreams happen!
You have been dreaming of some great plans
for a while, and now you will have the time and
resources to follow through. Make sure that this
is something that you are very
passionate about, however,
since it will require a great
deal of time and energy.
Final Look
Memories from the Journey
Temple St. Clair has always been
interested in the Silk Road and the cultures
that were merged from the travels along the
famous route. Her latest collection is inspired by the art,
architecture and beliefs carried along the Silk Road.
The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that connected
the East and the West. Trade along the route played a significant role in the
development of many civilizations.
“Each piece recalls a moment, idea, or location found along the Silk Road.
Rich gem colors in tsavorite, tanzanite, spessartite and ruby hint at the exotic
vegetation found in an oasis and reflect the richness of the silks and textiles that
might be traded there.
Mysterious shades of spinel from gray blues to violets combined with royal blue
moonstone are used to echo the pigments used for the Buddhist murals in the
Mogao caves.
Spirals, crescent moons and piqued shapes are used as golden details to
reflect fragments of architecture that might be seen or shapes cast by a
shadow along the way.
Shapes and colors represent collected memories from the journey,
the influence and inspiration that remain with us. A love of
history, of art, and of travel, is found here just as it was along
the Silk Road itself.”
