The TIE that binds the church & home together Volume 80, Issue 1 Page 2 Youth Ministry Looking Forward, Looking Back Each New Year comes like a gift of grace. It presents us with the opportunity to look forward to what may be. Some of us make resolutions. We try to be healthier. We try to be more focused or more productive. Others simply want to start a new spiritual practice—to have a daily devotion or improve prayer life or to be a better neighbor. We love to look forward to all the things that we WILL do. But before we start anything new, it is good to review and reflect upon the past before moving along too quickly to the future. I hope you will see this New Year as a gift from God for you to look at your life and think of ways you can live more fully into who God has created you to be. I also hope you will spend some time reflecting on how God has been faithful up to this point. Like our personal lives, the New Year provides our ministries with the opportunity to look forward and also to look back. I wanted to share with you some of the highlights of looking back through 2018 and sharing some goals for the future as we head into 2019. 2018 Review: In January of 2018, I began my ministry here at FBC Winchester. My goals from the beginning were to connect with students and with the rest of the congregation as much as possible. I’ve learned names, heard people’s stories, and have gotten acquainted with the Winchester community. I started a new Bible study. I led our youth on trips and community outings. I wrote weekly devotions open to folks both in and out of our church. There’s much to celebrate. Our church provided many missions opportunities in 2018. Our youth and children served monthly during the school year at Bright Futures. Our Wednesday night youth attendance was steady and increased in the year. As a church, we have also committed over $1,100,000 to our capital campaign. 2019 Goals: In 2019 my goals are to write (even) more. Youth Ministry Conversations will soon be publishing a curriculum I wrote called the “Body of Jonah” based on a series I did in Spring of 2018 with our youth. I am also in talks with the publishers at Smyth and Helwys about writing youth curriculum for their Formations and Connections series. I’m also hoping to connect more with our young adult community. Pastor Kristin and I have talked about a new initiative to connect younger adults in venues outside of the church to help to build bridges with folks who are into exploring God but may not be attending church. You’ll hear more about this in 2019. I want to continue developing mission partnerships. We’ve built lasting relationships with Bright Futures and other local ministries. My hope in 2019 is to continue developing our call to missions/service in our community and world. Lastly, I want to focus on fostering Christian Community among our youth. I am hoping in 2019 to do a “Spring Cleaning” of the 301 House and improve the dining room area so our student can share meals and Bible study around the table. The idea is to place a focus on table fellowship and see what God does with that. After all, the future is in God’s hands!

God won’t ask the square footage of your house; He’ll ask how many people you welcomed into your home. God won’t ask about the clothes in your closet; He’ll ask about the people you helped to clothe. God won’t ask what your highest salary was; He’ll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it. God won’t ask how many friends you had; He’ll ask how many to whom you were a friend. God won’t ask what neighborhood you lived in; He’ll ask how you treated your neighbors. Page 3 FBC Kids Greetings! I am excited to jump into the New Year with our FBC kids! We have an exciting beginning of January planned. We have a bowling event Sunday, January 13th, a Kids Worship on the 27th, and Wednesday night activities resume on January 9th. We will be having a “Fruits of the Spirit” themed Bible study on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday nights, and missions/game nights on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Lots of reminders will be going out to parents about all of the wonderful Winter and Spring activities we have planned! Please consider being a part of our children’s ministry! - Alison Wright
