Part II: Practice Tests
Verbal Ability: Sentence Completions
30. C. Choice A cannot be correct since both were goddesses (female). Since both were goddesses of love, Choice D,
opposites, is unlikely. Counterparts means something having the same functions and characteristics. Attributes are
characteristics.
31. A. Because the book will not add to something, the first blank requires a negative word. Recondite means not
easily understood. Although abstruse, Choice C, has a similar meaning, lunacy, meaning insanity, is not logical
for the second blank. Edification means intellectual improvement.
32. B. An admonition is a warning. Choice C is not correct because the match has not yet been ended by the referee.
33. C. If a person is shy, he would probably fear (dread) speaking before a group.
34. A. Something inherent is an essential or intrinsic characteristic.
35. C. The description in the second clause of the sentence indicates that desolate, meaning barren and gloomy, is
the best choice.
36. C. Indignation means anger caused by unfairness or injustice.
37. A. Speculative means based on inconclusive data, not based on evidence.
38. B. To be demoralized is to lack confidence, a probable effect of losing a game.
39. C. A quandary is a dilemma or state of perplexity.
40. D. The word in the first blank must have a positive connotation. Stalwart means strong and steadfast. An epitome
is a symbol of something.
41. A. To nurture means to help to grow or develop.
42. D. Since the person described in the sentence suffers from insomnia, something must be troubling him.
Disconcerting means upsetting one’s sense of self-possession. To be plagued is to be persistently annoyed.
43. B. Valorous means brave, and that is implied by the words “praise” and “rescue.”
44. C. Jubilant means joyful, and none of the other choices really fits the situation.
45. A. The word “umbrage” is the clue. It means to take offense. Thus, the audience would be angered, or incensed,
by the remark. Offhand also means unthinking, and demonstrates a lack of consideration.
46. D. It’s important to look for clues. In this sentence, the word “credit” indicates something positive. The only
positive word here is Choice D, which means strength. The other choices are negative words.
47. B. Some of the word choices just don’t make sense in the context of the sentence. Choice B is correct since
severity means serious, which is something one would find in a courtroom, and languidly means lazily, which
indicates his lack of concern.
48. A. It often helps to rewrite the sentence with each of the words. The only word that makes sense is rustic,
which means rural, and this is implied by the growth of the surrounding area. The area blossomed, but their cabin
did not.
49. D. Compatible means getting along with, or agreeable. It also means capable of integrating with a system. In this
case, the disks did not integrate with the new system.
50. A. Potent means strong, or having a strong chemical effect.
51. C. Obnoxious means extremely unpleasant, which was the reason they wanted him to leave the part—he was
obnoxious. Choices A and B don’t fit, and Choice D makes no sense in this context.
52. B. Droves means large groups. It’s not likely they feared the music, and they certainly weren’t teams. And
although they may have disliked the music, disagreement is not the correct word here.
