Note from the Ideator
Swami Vivekananda has been an eternal source
of inspiration for the people of all ages, races,
beliefs and belongings. His utterings are so very
power-packed that they have the potential to
energize a fatigued mind, shake off a lethargic
physique to rise in action and awaken a desolate
soul seeking salvation.
A small booklet titled ‘Thoughts of Power ’
containing a compilation of his quotes that was
gifted to me during my student-years by Swami
Harshanandaji of RIMSE, Mysore, has been my
cherished possession for over three decades
now and it has been the go-to companion for me
at times of despair when I needed confidence,
courage and inspiration the most.
It is in all earnestness to pass on the inspiration I
have been bestowed upon by the immortal
words of this eternal guru that I bring out this
small booklet to you.
Gratefully,
Hold the idea, ―I am not the mind, I see that I
am thinking, I am watching my mind act,‖ and
each day the identification of yourself with the
thought and feeling will grow less, until at last
you can entirely separate yourself from the mind
and actually know it to be apart yourself.
When this is done, the mind is your servant to
control as you will.
When the mind is conquered, he has reached
the highest stage. (8:48)
Take up one idea. Make that one idea your
life; think of it; dream of it; live on that idea.
Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of
your body be full of that idea, and just leave
every other idea alone. This is the way to
success, and this is the way great spiritual
giants are produced. (1:177)
Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole
responsibility on your own shoulders, and know
that you are the creator of your own destiny. All
the strength and succor you want is within
yourselves. Therefore, make your own future.
Whatever you think that you will be. If you
think yourself weak, weak you will be; if you
think yourself strong, strong you will be.
Be strong, my young friends; that is my
advice to you. You will be nearer to Heaven
through football than through the study of
the Gita. These are bold words; but I have
to say them, for I love you.
This is the great fact:
Strength is life; weakness is death;
Strengths is felicity, life eternal, immortal;
weakness is constant strain and misery,
weakness is death.
We are responsible for what we are, and
whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the
power to make ourselves.
If what we are now have been the result of
our past actions, it certainly follows that
whatever we wish to be in future can be
produced by our present actions. (1:31)
« ☼ »
The bottom of a lake we cannot see, because
its surface is covered with ripples. It is only
possible to catch a glimpse of the bottom,
when the ripples have subsided, and the
water is calm. If the water is muddy or is
agitated all the time, the bottom will not be
seen. If it is clear, and there are no waves,
we shall see the bottom. The bottom of the
lake is our own true Self. (1:202)
Knowledge is inherent in man; no knowledge
comes from outside; it is all inside…
We say Newton discovered gravitation; was
it sitting in anywhere in a corner waiting for
him? It was in his own mind; the time came
and he found it out.
All the knowledge the world has ever received
comes from the mind; the infinite library of the
universe is in your own mind. The external
world is simply the suggestion, the occasion,
which sets you to study your own mind.
The monkeys of Varanasi are huge brutes and
are sometimes surly. They now took it into their
heads not to allow me to pass through their
street, so they howled and shrieked and clutched
at my feet as I passed. As they pressed closer, I
began to run, but the faster I ran, the faster
came the monkeys and they began to bite at me.
It seemed impossible to escape, but just then I
met a stranger who called out to me, "Face the
brutes." I turned and faced the monkeys, and
they fell back and finally fled.
That is a lesson for all life — face the terrible,
face it boldly. Like the monkeys, the hardships
of life fall back when we cease to flee before
them. If we are ever to gain freedom, it must be
by conquering nature, never by running away.
Cowards never win victories. We have to fight
fear and troubles and ignorance if we expect
them to flee before us.
The great secret of true success, of true
happiness, is this: the man or woman who asks
for no return, the perfectly unselfish person, is
the most successful.
So help whenever you can, but mind what your
motive is. If it is selfish, it will neither benefit
those you help, nor yourself. If it is unselfish, it
will bring blessings upon them to whom it is
given, and infinite blessings upon you, sure as
you are living.
« ☼ »
If you think you are bound, you remain
bound; you make your own bondage. If you
know that you are free, you are free this
moment. This is the knowledge, knowledge
of freedom. Freedom is the goal of all
nature. (2:462)
We are free if we would only believe it, only
have faith enough. You are the soul, free
and eternal, ever free, ever blessed. Have
faith enough and you will be free in a
moment. (6:93)
« ☼ »
If there is one word that you find coming out
like a bomb from the Upanishads, bursting like
a bombshell upon masses of ignorance, it is the
word ―fearlessness‖. And the only religion that
ought to be taught is the religion of fearlessness.
Either in this world or in the world of religion,
it is true that fear is the sure cause of
degradation and sin. It is the fear that brings
misery, fear that brings death, fear that breeds
evil. (3:160)
Be not afraid of anything. You will do
marvelous work. It is fearlessness that brings
heaven even in a moment
« ☼ »
It is the cheerful mind that is persevering. It is
the strong mind that hews its way through a
thousand difficulties.
It is our own mental attitude which makes the
world what it is for us. Our thought make
things beautiful, our thoughts make things ugly.
The whole world is in our own minds. Learn to
see things in the proper light
« ☼ »
In the world take always the position of the
giver. Give everything and look for no return.
Give love, give help, give service, give any little
thing you can, but keep out barter. Make no
conditions and none will be imposed on you. Let
us give out of our own bounty, just as God gives
to us
« ☼ »
The ideal of faith in ourselves is of the greatest
help to us. If faith in ourselves had been more
extensively taught and practiced, I am sure a
very large portion of the evils and miseries that
we have would have vanished.
He is an atheist who does not believe in himself.
The old religions said that he was an atheist
who did not believe in God. The new religion
says that he is an atheist who does not believe in
himself.
If you have faith in all the three hundred and
thirty millions of your mythological gods, and in
all the gods which foreigners have now and again
introduced into your midst, and still have no
faith in yourself, there is no salvation for you.
There is a pretty Indian fable to the effect that if
it rains when the star Svâti is in the ascendant,
and a drop of rain falls into an oyster, that drop
becomes a pearl. The oysters know this, so they
come to the surface when that star shines, and
wait to catch the precious raindrop. When a
drop falls into them, quickly the oysters close
their shells and dive down to the bottom of the
sea, there to patiently develop the drop into the
pearl.
We should be like that. First hear, then
understand, and then, leaving all distractions,
shut your minds to outside influences, and devote
yourselves to developing the truth within you....
Take one thing up and do it, and see the end of
it, and before you have seen the end, do not give
it up. He who can become mad with an idea, he
alone sees light.
« ☼ »
To succeed, you must have a tremendous
perseverance, tremendous will. ‗I will drink the
ocean‘, says the persevering soul, ‗at my will,
mountains will crumble up.‘ Have that sort of
energy, that sort of will; work hard and you
will reach the goal. (1:178)
Never think there is impossible for the soul. It
is the greatest heresy to think so. If there is any
sin, this is the only sin- to say that you are
weak, or others are weak (2:308)
Never say, ‗no‘; never say, ‗I cannot‘, for you
are infinite. Even time and space are as
nothing compared with your nature. You can
do anything and everything, you are almighty.
(2:300)
« ☼ »
Never mind failures; they are
quite natural, they are the beauty
of life – these failures. What
would life be without them? It
would not be worth having if it
were not for struggles. Where
would be the poetry of life? Never
mind the struggles, the mistakes.
I have never heard a cow tell a
lie, but it is only a cow- never a
man. So never mind these
failures, these little backslidings;
hold the ideal a thousand times;
and if you fail a thousand times,
make the attempt once more.
« ☼ »
All love is expansion, all selfishness is
contraction. Love is therefore the only law of life.
He who loves lives, he who is selfish is dying.
Therefore love for love's sake, because it is the
only law of life, just as you breathe to live.
With love, there is no painful reaction; love only
brings a reaction of bliss; if it does not, it is not
love; it is mistaking something else for love.
When you have succeeded in loving your
husband, your wife, your children, the whole
world, the universe, in such a manner that there
is no pain or jealousy, no selfish feeling, then you
are in a fit state to unattached.
« ☼ »
Do you know how much energy, how many
powers, how many forces, are still lurking
behind that frame of yours? What scientist
has known all that is in man? Millions of
years have passed since man came here,
and yet but one infinitesimal part of his
powers has been manifested. Therefore, you
must not say that you are weak. How do
you know what possibilities lie behind that
degradation on the surface? You know but
little of that which is within you. For
behind you is the ocean of infinite power
and blessedness.
Realize your true nature. That is all there
is to do. Know yourself as you are - infinite
Spirit. That is practical religion.
Everything else is impractical, for
everything else will perish.
