In September 2017, Florida Rentals named 

Sebring one of the four most beautiful 

Florida towns off the beaten path. The 

blog cited Sebring’s growing year-round 

population, nestled among rivers, lakes and 

citrus groves, as proof that the community is a 

must-visit. 

And in May 2018, Sebring landed in the 

New York Post as one of the seven best 

Florida escapes. Highlands Hammock State 

Park, the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife 

Refuge, Sebring International Raceway, nearby 

championship golf courses, airboat excursions 

and local eateries were cited as reasons Sebring 

made the list. 

It’s no wonder Sebring is one of Florida’s 

hidden gems.

History 

Sebring continues to extend the 

same warm welcome it has since 

it was founded in 1912 by Ohio 

industrialist George Sebring. 

The pioneer visionary designed a 

circular plan as a focal point for the 

entire lakeside community he visioned 

as “The City on the Circle.” George 

Sebring’s idea was that all roads 

would radiate from the center of the 

community. Despite many modern 

improvements, his design remains 

essentially the same today as when the 


concept was still a sketch. 

Archival records indicate the 

founder’s “Circle Plan” for the 

downtown area was based on the 

design of Heliopolis, an ancient 

Egyptian city. 

The unique design of the new 

town quickly caught the attention of 

investors, real estate entrepreneurs 

and bankers who were drawn to the 

layout of the community, seeing it as 

a potential financial bonanza. Adding 

to the allure was the development 

of cattle ranches and citrus groves 

complemented by connections via 

Seaboard Air Line Railroad’s famous 

“Orange Blossom Special” to other 

cities across the nation’s eastern 

coastline. 

By the mid-1920s, the population 

of Sebring had grown nearly 

fourfold, and much of the city’s 

early development had reached its 

peak. The City on the Circle had 

developed into the business mecca

the demand for housing outpaced 

the ability of developers’ ability to 

construct. That didn’t stop Biltmore 

investors from financing the $30 

million development of Harder Hall 

as a major resort complex complete

with its own golf course and home sites. 

By the late 1920s, an end to the boom brought 

fraudulent land sales, railroad embargoes and clogged 

shipyards. The City of Sebring suffered along with the 

rest of the nation following the stock market’s “Crash 

of ‘29.” But the area got a tremendous boost from the 

establishment of Highlands Hammock State Park — 

Florida’s very first state park — and the construction of 

Hendrick’s Field by the U.S. Army Air Force. Today, the 

airfield is home to Sebring Regional Airport. 

Downtown Sebring has since been designated a 1920s 

Historic District on the National Register of Historic 

Places. 

Area pride and excitement was revived in the 1950s 

when annual international sports car racing began at the 

airport, utilizing many of the concrete runways built 

during the facility’s years as a military flight training base. 

The world-renowned Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring 

Presented by Advance Auto Parts continues today as the 

oldest sports car race of its kind in North America. 

Like many central business districts in America, 

downtown Sebring suffered a slump in the 1970s that 

began to correct itself a decade later. With an eye on 

the future, the Sebring City Council — through special 

legislation — created the Community Redevelopment 

Agency (CRA) to spearhead development and 

improvements in the downtown area. As a result, Sebring 

was named a Florida Main Street Community in 1966 

and subsequently invested more than $20 million in 

renovations and upgrades. 

Today, downtown Sebring offers a unique blend of 

shops, restaurants and professional businesses, including 

hometown newspaper “The Highlands News-Sun,” which

has documented Sebring’s history for 100 years. All are 

within walking distance of Sebring’s Cultural Center, 

which includes the public library, Sebring Historical 

Society, Highlands Art League, Highlands Museum of 

the Arts, and Highlands Little Theatre. 

Retail businesses continue to grow, both downtown 

and along U.S. 27. An enclosed shopping mall with five 

major anchor stores and dozens of smaller businesses 

make indoor shopping a great experience. In addition 

to the mall, every need from automobiles, insurance 

and home furnishings to hardware, building supplies, 

groceries and antiques can be found right here at home, 

where the economy is growing, and locals and visitors 

alike are welcomed by our merchants and professionals. 

Government 

Sebring has historically been the county seat, with 

the Highlands County Courthouse — dedicated in 

1927 — housing court operations and the Highlands 

County Clerk of the Courts. The Highlands County 

Sheriff ’s Office and Jail sit behind the courthouse. The 

county’s Government Center is just next door on South 

Commerce Avenue, housing the Board of County 

Commission, Tax Collector, Property Appraiser and 

Supervisor of Elections offices. Both the Engineering 

and Planning/Zoning departments sit across South 

Commerce Avenue from the Government Center. 

Sebring’s City Hall is on South Commerce Avenue 

and the city has its own police fire, water/sewer, solid 

waste and planning departments. 

Nature 

Sebring sits atop a unique feature of Florida. The 

Lake Wales Ridge is the highest and oldest part of the 

peninsula. The first sandy islands that rose from the sea 

millions of years ago are now part of the Ridge. Those 

years of isolation gave the Ridge an ecosystem unlike 

any in the world. 

The tallest trees, scrub oaks, are gnarled dwarfs only 

chest to head high. Without a canopy, the sun’s rays beat 


down oven hot; the ground is white, 

beach-grade, sugar sand; flowers 

are tiny, and many plants are spiny. 

Animals like the scrub jay, the sand 

skink and the gopher tortoise are 

found only here. 

South Florida State College’s 

Wayside Shrine Trail offers a walk 

through a patch of the scrub, with 

signposts pointing out some of the 

unique plants along the way. You 

can also bike and hike the trails in 

the Preserve area of the Sun ’n Lake 

Improvement District. 

Archbold Biological Station in 

Venus and Lake June-in-Winter Scrub 

State Park in Lake Placid are areas 

set aside to preserve the endangered 

scrub. There is also the Hickory 

Hammock Wildlife Management Area 

to the east on U.S. 98. 

But there is more than just the 

Ridge. On the west side of the county 

is Highlands Hammock State Park, 

which is the beginning of a watershed 

that takes water from the Ridge and

ultimately into the Gulf of Mexico. 

The park opened to the public in 

1931, four years before the state park 

system was established. The park was 

brought into existence by a group of 

local citizens who were determined to 

save the virgin hardwood forest and 

its surrounding swamp and scrub land 

from being turned into farms. 

Covering 9,000-plus acres, the park 

offers camping and picnic areas as 

well as miles of walking and biking 

trails that take visitors past 1,000-yearold 

trees and across cypress swamps 

via a catwalk system.

that the Sebring area has to offer. 

Racing 

Sebring’s greatest claim to 

fame is that it is home to Sebring 

International Raceway, a worldrenown 

race track that is recognized 

as one of the most demanding race 

tracks on both cars and drivers. For 

this reason, the track is a favorite test 

facility for racing teams from all over 

the country, both for sportscar teams 

and IndyCar, which holds several tests 

at the track on an annual basis. 

The biggest event is naturally the 

Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring 

Presented by Advance Auto Parts, 

which will next take place March 13- 

16, 2019. 

The 2019 edition also marks the 

return of the World Endurance 

Championship, featuring the best 

sportscar racing teams in the world, 

and well-known drivers, such 

as former Formula 1 champion 

Fernando Alonso. 

Sebring is race No. 7 on the ninerace 

WEC Super Season schedule, 

with only the 6 Hours of Spa- 

Francorchaps and the 24 Hours of 

Le Mans remaining after the teams 

partake in the 1,000 Miles of Sebring 

on Friday, March 15, giving race fans 

two great feature races to watch and

home to the final stop of the HSR 

season, the annual Historic Sportscar 

Racing Sebring Classic 12, Pistons 

and Props, Presented by Alan Jay 

Automotive Network, which takes

Cars from the 1950s up through 

newer cars will be racing during the 

weekend, which has been patterned 

after the immensely popular Classic 

24 Hour at Daytona, so there isn’t 

just one 12-hour race, but a series of 

races that begin one right after the 

other, so fans can see all the different 

types of cars on hand. Racing on 

Saturday, Dec. 7, will go well into the 

evening, for those who enjoy night 

racing. 

Sebring's rich aviation is also 

recognized, as there will be a classic 

plane fly-in and the planes will be on 

display at the track. Tickets for Pistons

Highlands Art League offers a multitude of classes in 

painting, sculpture and crafts for all ages. The annual Art, 

Wine & Jazz Festival in November in Downtown Sebring 

draws attendees and vendors from around the state and 

nation. HAL also hosts an Artist of the Month reception 

the second Friday of each month, often coinciding with 

special downtown events. In addition, Highlands Museum 

of the Arts, which neighbors Highlands Little Theatre, 

has an ongoing schedule of art exhibits. 

The Heartland Cultural Alliance is another group for 

artists, featuring a gallery with rotating exhibits at the 

Sebring Regional Airport. 

Located near the center of downtown is the Allen 

Altvater Cultural Center, which encompasses MOTA, 

HLT, Sebring Public Library and the Sebring Historical 

Society. Performing arts and live theater are well 

represented by HLT, an organization of committed 

volunteers who present the highest quality in musical, 

variety and dramatic theater on a year-round schedule. 

Local directors, actors and musicians combine skills and 

talents to provide performances equal to those found in 

larger metropolitan areas. 

The Alan J. Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts, 

on the campus of South Florida State College, is a 1,460-

Celebrating the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built many

in the nation for employment gains in 2017. 

Only one other Florida Metropolitan Statistical 

Area (MSA) made the list of “Top 25 cities

These initiatives are thanks to cooperation 

among the Highlands County Industrial 

Development Authority/Economic 

Development Commission, South Florida State 

College, Florida’s Heartland Rural Economic 

Development Initiative (REDI) and the 

Small Business Development Center of the 

Heartland, which was created by a partnership 

between Florida’s Heartland REDI, the county 

IDA/EDC and SFSC. 

The county and the Sebring Regional Airport 

belong to the South Central Florida Catalyst 

Project, a $25 million economic development 

initiative to bring new industries and jobs to the 

Highlands County area. In the last few years, 

the airport has seen many businesses move 

to its industrial park, such as CitraPac, which 

makes frozen fruit pearls from flash-frozen 

oranges and tangerines and juice concentrates 

to serve in school cafeterias. 

The Sebring airport boasts the largest local 

industrial park with 2,000 acres, designated 

as Foreign Trade Zone No. 215. Most other 

industrial parks are located within the county’s 

enterprise zone, although some commercial

Highlands County has three high

The School Board of Highlands County, led by 

Superintendent Brenda Longshore, has 17 schools:

Founded in 1965, South Florida State College (SFSC) – 

with campuses in Highlands, DeSoto and Hardee counties 

– is one of 28 colleges within the Florida College System 

and serves around 16,000 students a year. 

In 2015, South Florida State College celebrated its 50th 

anniversary. The 228-acre Highlands campus is located 

two miles south of Avon Park on an isthmus, bounded 

on the north by Lake Lelia, to the south by Lake Glenada,

and to the west by U.S. 27.

Golfing 

It isn’t hard to figure out the most 

popular sport in Highlands County. 

With 17 public golf courses adding 

up to 140 holes and the weather 

that makes it possible to play almost 

any day of the year, hitting the links 

is a popular activity locally and an 

attraction that draws tourists and new 

residents alike to the Greater Sebring 

area. 

Ten of those courses are in the 

Sebring area, with two more — 

Highland Ridge North and South 

— technically being in Avon Park but 

sitting closer to downtown Sebring 

than its neighbor to the north. 

Sebring’s first golf course was 

carved out of the pines and oaks 

just a pitching wedge away from the 

shores of Lake Jackson. The first 

nine holes were built along with the 

Harder Hall hotel back in the 1930s.

In the 1950s, those holes 

were given to the city and 

are now part of the Sebring 

Golf Club, known to locals

Outdoors 

A high quality of life enjoyed in the Greater Sebring 

area and all of Highlands County is due, in part, to the 

seemingly endless opportunities for recreational activities. 

The mild climate invites residents and visitors to enjoy a 

wide variety of outdoor activities on a year-round basis. 

The county has numerous lakes — more than 100 in 

all, but 87 with names — most with access for fishing, 

boating, swimming, water skiing and newer trends such as

Famed for its largemouth bass fishing, sprawling Lake 

Istokpoga is just south of the Sebring area and boasts 

several fish camps and numerous fishing guides. In July 

2018, Bassmaster Magazine released its listing of the top 

100 bass lakes in the U.S. and Sebring's Lake Istokpoga 

was No. 7 on the list of Southeastern U.S. lakes. 

Sebring’s gem is Lake Jackson, which is also known for 

its share of big bass. City owned and maintained beaches 

on Lake Jackson are popular spots for family recreation. 

Arbuckle Creek to the north and the Kissimmee River 

to the east, along with 19 county parks and 44 countymaintained 

boat ramps, provide residents and guests with 

diverse opportunities to enjoy water sports. There aren’t 

many days that go by when you don’t see multiple boats 

out on Lake Jackson, usually with somebody at the end of 

a ski rope behind them. 

Besides golf, fishing may be the biggest draw to the 

Sebring area. Largemouth bass are the most popular 

target, but our lakes, ponds and creeks, as well as the 

Kissimmee River, which marks the eastern boundary of 

the county, are teeming with all kinds of fish. Crappies 

(locals call them specks) are the most popular panfish 

sought by anglers and almost each body of water has a 

catfish or two swimming in it.

Hunters also have plenty of 

opportunities, although the hunting sites 

are all on private property or part of 

government lands. The biggest is the 

Avon Park Air Force Range, northeast of 

Avon Park (in Polk County). An active 

military installation, the Range boasts 

106,000 acres, giving plenty of room for 

military maneuvers and hunting camps 

to co-exist. The Range annually gives 

out passes to hunt deer, turkey, hogs 

and quail and is also a great place for 

camping and fishing. 

Nature lovers have numerous choices 

for hiking, camping, picnicking and bird 

watching. Highlands Hammock State 

Park features exciting and informative 

hiking trails and boardwalks — some 

of which are wheelchair accessible. 

The state park — the first in Florida 

— covers 9,000-plus acres and offers 

camping and picnic areas, as well as 

miles of walking and biking trails and 

narrated tram tours through miles of 

well-preserved native wilderness.

opportunities in the area. The Great 

Florida Birding Trail runs through the 

county and in our parks and wildlands, 

residents and visitors can see alligators, 

deer, otters, armadillos, bears, dozens of 

varieties of birds, as well as other wildlife. 

In and around Sebring and Highlands 

County, observers can see the endangered 

Florida scrub jay, along with the swallowtail 

kite, sandhill crane, osprey and bald 

eagle — all in their natural habitat. 

South Florida State College’s Wayside 

Shrine Trail offers a walk through a patch 

of the scrub, with signposts pointing 

out some of the unique plants along the 

way. You can also bike and hike the trails 

in the Preserve area of the Sun ’n Lake 

Improvement District. 

Archbold Biological Station in Venus 

and Lake June-in-Winter Scrub State 

Park in Lake Placid are areas set aside to 

preserve the endangered scrub. There 

is also the Hickory Hammock Wildlife 

Management Area to the east on U.S. 98.

Fitness 

While there is ample opportunity to 

kick back and relax in the Sebring area, 

there is also plenty for those who want 

to work up a sweat. With ample sunny 

days and plenty of less-traveled roads, 

there is plenty of room for workouts. 

The biggest gathering of fitness buffs 

is the Heartland Triathlon, which began 

in 2006. 

A triathlon is a true challenge, and 

there are two different races for adults 

during the triathlon weekend, which 

is held annually in June. In the sprint 

distance, athletes swim a quarter mile, 

bike 14 miles and run a 5K (3.1 miles). 

In 2013, an Olympic-distance race was 

added, which features a .93-mile swim, a 

24.8-mile bike ride and a 10K (6.2-mile) 

run. There are also shorter races for kids 

on the day before the adult race.

Bike Fest in December bring 

hundreds of bikers for rides ranging 

from short jaunts to centuries. 

That’s 100 miles and that’s a warm 

up for the folks who come in 

February for the Bike Sebring 12-24, 

where riders go for 12 hours or 24 

hours — spending the overnight 

hours doing laps around Sebring 

International Raceway.

bicycle club hosts rides for all

South Florida State College is the 

proud organizer of the 2019 Heartland 

Senior Games, which takes 

place in February. The many scheduled 

events are for active adults age 

50 and older. Those who place in 

the top 5 in their age and gender 

category in the various athletic competitions 

earn the right to represent 

the Heartland (Highlands, DeSoto 

and Hardee counties) at the Florida 

Senior Games in December 2019.

The two biggest races for runners 

— the Thanksgiving Day Turkey 

Trot and the Firecracker 5K on July 

4 — are on the certified 5K course 

at Highlands Hammock, but there 

are races in the area almost every 

weekend. 

Those who want to get an indoor 

workout can go to Gold’s Gym at 

1720 U.S. 27 North in Sebring or 

the YMCA just off Hammock Road 

in Sebring. Both offer pools and 

fully staffed and equipped workout 

facilities, both with free weights and 

fitness machines. In addition, both 

offer a large lineup of classes for all 

ages. ■
