Tamaulipas has been blessed with large
fishing lakes and also has the oldest and
most famous fishing lake in the world: The
Vicente Guerrero Dam, also known as “Las
Adjuntas”.
This medium-sized dam has a large variety of structures, dense
dead woods, a large extensions of vegetation of various types, hydrilla,
cow belly, etc. A main stream that crosses from side to side
winding several times through its bottom, falls from light to very
pronounced, and a federal highway that was sunk in its bed. All
this combined with the clarity of its waters, makes this dam a great
fishing stadium, where we find extraordinary bass of the Florida
type and also Black Bass. The record of this dam, as far as I know, is
14.6 lbs., captured in the Luengas from Tampico family fishing field.
There are 3 fishing camps that offer their services to tourism, with
ramps, food, comfortable functional cabins with A/C and heating,
hot water, T.V., telephone, boats and fishing guides.
To the south, there are 3 large dams, La Emilio Portes Gil, known
as “Xico” or “San Lorenzo”, of medium extension with a structure
based on stones and sticks and its coverage is based on aquatic
vegetation, steep falls and several streams that cross your background.
Also one of the longest curtains in Mexico, almost 2 miles
long. This dam obtains water from an artificial tributary constructed
from the Guayalejo River and that in the floods supplies not only
water, but also nutrients and fodder, it was developed in the 80’s
as one of the best dams to fish bass, being very common to obtain
catches of 100 pieces per day per person of 5 lbs. on average. Of
course, this is over, however, this dam has given animals over 14 lbs
year-over-year and is on its way to recovery, so we highly recommend
it. There are 2 fishing camps on its banks, La Gaviota by our
friend Tony and Campo Mariposas, the latter with luxury rooms,
good cuisine, boats and fishing guides.
In Tampico and Altamira, the Tamesí River, which upstream is
called Guayalejo, forms a very extensive lagoon system, almost 8
square miles of freshwater. It is a “short” system because the average
depth is one meter. Its structure is basically vegetation with
a silt-based bottom and many “tule” islands, which are the main
structure for fishing since the bass are typically hidden between
their roots. In this system you can easily fish 100 bass per day,
And for last, the great surprise ... An old court but recently rediscovered
as one of the great fishing dams of Mexico, the “Ramiro
Caballero” dam. Nestled between the municipalities of Mante and
Gonzalez, this medium-sized dam has a structure based on stone
in its long curtain as well as varied vegetation on its banks, few or
no falls, a small stream that crosses it and very few Palisades or
areas of logs.
For many years fishermen in these areas only obtained few bass
and small, so it was thought that for reasons of water pH, they did
not reproduce. The water of this dam is emerald color. However,
after several reports of good catches, the municipality of Mante
through the municipal DIF organized a tournament and the numbers
were surprising: 27 lbs. in 10 bass of the first place, giving an
average weight in the tournament of 2.7 lbs. a bass, the best in the
country without a doubt.
The fishing stadiums of Tamaulipas, in terms of bass, are unmatched
worldwide. It is not for nothing that thousands of tourists
visit the state just for their bass fishing. The best season is from
February to May but all year round you can find good quality bass
in all its dams. Remember that the law allows only 5 bass per day
per fisherman, so do not exceed these limits.
The State Government together with the municipalities are doing
a great job to promote their dams as high level tourist attractions
and they are making large investments to bring them to a level of
excellence, therefore, when visiting, do not leave trash on its shores
or pollute its waters with oil or gasoline, we are all cooperating
so that these natural stadiums continue to be what until today: A
pride for the fishermen and the country in general.
Until the next tide
