by Paul J<strong>on</strong>es<br />
So you’ve got a ukulele for Christmas, or perhaps it’s your New Year’s Resoluti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> dust<br />
off <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> strings, pick it up and finally learn this little four-stringed instrument. But where<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> begin?<br />
<strong>Ukulele</strong> <strong>Quest</strong> co-author Paul J<strong>on</strong>es has a few helpful tips and suggesti<strong>on</strong>s that will set<br />
you <strong>on</strong> a quest <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> master <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ukulele this <str<strong>on</strong>g>year</str<strong>on</strong>g>…<br />
Picking up any new instrument for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time can be daunting – even <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ukulele.<br />
When navigating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se first few weeks of learning your ukulele, try <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> take small steps<br />
and focus <strong>on</strong> little ideas. This could be memorising <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> names of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> strings, mastering<br />
your first chord shape, or learning <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> hold <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ukulele <strong>with</strong> good posture. Try <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make sure<br />
you have a solid grasp of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se simple but important elements before moving <strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
next step. Learning an instrument is like building a house, str<strong>on</strong>g foundati<strong>on</strong>s are needed<br />
before you can add <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> it.<br />
A great target <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> set for your first few weeks<br />
of playing is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> master <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chords C, Am,<br />
F and G (or G6 for an easier opti<strong>on</strong>). Our<br />
beginner’s book <strong>Ukulele</strong> <strong>Quest</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>start</str<strong>on</strong>g>s by<br />
taking you through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se chords in great<br />
detail and has purpose-written s<strong>on</strong>gs <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
help you practise transiti<strong>on</strong>ing from <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. The s<strong>on</strong>gs are upbeat and funky as<br />
it is always more inspiring <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> play <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a good<br />
beat!<br />
“Learning an instrument is like building a house, str<strong>on</strong>g<br />
foundati<strong>on</strong>s are needed before you can add <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> it.”<br />
These four chords are relatively easy for beginners <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pick up and <strong>with</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are<br />
hundreds of s<strong>on</strong>gs that you can strum al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>. After you’ve tackled <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first four chapters<br />
of <strong>Ukulele</strong> <strong>Quest</strong>, tracks like “Let it Be” by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Beatles, “I’m Yours” by Jas<strong>on</strong> Mraz and “Can’t<br />
S<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Feeling” by Justin Timberlake (made famous by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trolls movie) are a great next<br />
step – and can all be played using <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se chords!<br />
If you’re not quite c<strong>on</strong>fident enough <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> play C, Am, F and G all in <strong>on</strong>e go during a s<strong>on</strong>g,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>start</str<strong>on</strong>g> by focussing <strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>e chord and play it each time it comes around in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sequence.
You can <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n try out two chords, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n three chords and<br />
finally all four chords; you’ll be playing al<strong>on</strong>g in no time!<br />
Taking this approach and gradually building <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chords up<br />
will help make <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> s<strong>on</strong>g less daunting and is a helpful way<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> track your progress.<br />
If you’re a younger learner or have a child who is picking<br />
up <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ukulele for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time, try using coloured stickers<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> mark out <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chord shapes (using a different colour for<br />
each chord). Through teaching in primary schools, coauthor<br />
James Oram and I have used this idea during our<br />
less<strong>on</strong>s and noticed that it really helps children find and<br />
memorise <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chord shapes. Coloured dot stickers can be<br />
purchased cheaply and are a quick and easy indica<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <strong>on</strong><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fretboard. This can really speed up learning, especially<br />
for more visual learners.<br />
Learning any instrument is an exciting and rewarding journey. James and I are both<br />
passi<strong>on</strong>ate about making music learning enjoyable and accessible for children. When<br />
writing <strong>Ukulele</strong> <strong>Quest</strong>, we wanted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> provide a resource that would be ideal for learners<br />
taking <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir first steps <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> instrument. The book takes small steps and reinforces<br />
learning throughout in a fun and interesting way.<br />
We’d love <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> hear about your 2019 <strong>Ukulele</strong> <strong>Quest</strong>. Let us know how you get <strong>on</strong>!<br />
