TIDBITS Proving THE PLAY Forward thinking Sometimes, quite often in fact, what you are doing right now has a more long reaching impact. The stories in this edition will be worth checking in on again in the future. The students at East Elementary in Sheldon recently got a taste of taekwondo, with instructors from the Sheldon ATA club teaching at physical education classes for a few days. The hope is that the students decide to join the club, where they learn many valuable life skills as well as the martial art. Siouxland Adaptive Sports and the Sioux Center Hockey Association, along with a few other donors, have teamed up and now offer sled hockey as an option for athletes with physical disabilities. The sport has been a huge hit and the hope now is that it’s success helps the sport grow to other places around the Midwest. Hockey in general seems to be a growth sport in the region as the Sioux Center Storm girls are taking a second shot at varsity level play in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association. The Storm tried it once before, but found its numbers situation to be a major disadvantage. This time around there is more experience and greater depth and the team seems to be well on its way to eclipsing its goals. “Sometimes what you are doing right now has a more long-reaching impact.” Scott Byers SPORTS EDITOR West Sioux High School junior Hunter Dekkers will soon need to decide if his future is in football or baseball. Dekkers, an all-state pick in both sports, will certainly have some options. His list of offers to play quarterback figures to expand with the exposure he’s about to get by competing in the Elite 11 camp this spring. The Elite 11 is one of the most exclusive and wellknown competitions in the nation. Eleven of the past 12 quarterbacks to win the Heisman Trophy have participated in the competition. he is Last season Dekkers led all classes in passing with 3,641 yards 614 more than his nearest competitor. Hunter Dekkers threw 48 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions while completing 61 percent of his throws. Read more about Hunter Dekkers on page 21.
