The Baroque Collective<br />

Period instrument ensemble The Baroque Collective, led by<br />

Alison Bury, are joined by the Baroque Collective Singers to<br />

perform the popular Gloria by <strong>Viva</strong>ldi and his equally glorious<br />

but lesser-known Magnificat. Handel’s Coronation Anthem Let<br />

Thy Hand be Strengthened and Overture to Rodrigo complete the<br />

programme. It’s directed by John Hancorn, with soloists Jenni<br />

Harper and Rebecca Leggett (pictured). Rebecca is an awardwinning<br />

and up-and-coming mezzo who started her singing career<br />

as a student at the excellent East Sussex Academy of Music<br />

in <strong>Lewes</strong> which, like all state-funded classical music education,<br />

is seriously under threat. This concert is sure to be popular, so<br />

don’t rely on tickets being available on the door.<br />

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. Guest<br />

director Stephen Bell conducts the Prelude and<br />

Liebestod from Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan<br />

and Isolde, known for its harmonic sophistication<br />

which was unprecedented at the time. Also on<br />

the programme are Richard Strauss Four Last<br />

Songs featuring Welsh soprano Camilla Roberts,<br />

and Glière Symphony No 1 Op 8.<br />

Corelli Ensemble. Reprising its January<br />

concert at Seaford, the Corelli Ensemble is in<br />

by Vaughan Williams, played by the ensemble’s<br />

FRIDAY 22, 8PM<br />

Poppy Ackroyd. Classically-trained musician<br />

Poppy Ackroyd creates percussive textures from<br />

traditional classical instruments, which she<br />

layers and manipulates digitally. The result is<br />

an interesting fusion of acoustic and electronic.<br />

She’s ‘a neo-classical force to be reckoned with’,<br />

Castalian Quartet with Daniel Lebhardt,<br />

Piano. The Coffee Concert series at ACCA continues<br />

to present high-quality music. This month<br />

the Castalian Quartet play Haydn String Quartet<br />

in C Op 20 No 2 and Elgar String Quartet in E minor<br />

Op 83, before joining with Hungarian pianist<br />

Daniel Lebhardt for Brahms’s dramatic and fiery<br />
