St Miquel’s Chapel
C/ Sant Miquel, 35
It is located on an old area that expanded
next to the Puerta de Oliva and
the Mayorazgo Gate.
The chapel is one of the oldest buildings
preserved in Pego, some time in
the 14th and 15th centuries; it belongs
to Valencian Gothic.
It is a chapel with basilica plan and a
sacristy attached to the north side, a
square apse, and three naves divided
by two diaphragm arches.
Inside, there is a traditional altar with
an image of St Michael, framed by
columns and topped with a lintel. The
walls are decorated with oil paintings
representing St Michael and St Joseph.
The façade, with an undulating cornice,
makes us think that it was built at a
later stage, already in the Baroque, and
that there was an older, simpler façade.
The second level of the façade has a
ceramic tile devoted to St Michael. It is
framed by two small, circular windows
and topped, on the third level by the
bell tower.
St Michael’s is celebrated on the 29th
of September, with a street festival,
music and a dinner open to anybody
wanting to take part.
St Josep’s Chapel
Pla de la Font, 19
The chapel is from the beginning of
the 20th century, although the original
building was constructed in the 16th
and 17th centuries.
It has a basilica plan divided into five
naves, semi-circular apse and side
sacristy, an annexe at the foot of the
chapel to the east and a choir at the
end, with iron railings.
The interior is austere and sober, with
classical reminiscences. It has a high
altar with the image of St Joseph,
between two columns on each side,
with gold decoration and an undecorated
image of the Veronica to the side.
Its façade has a door with a depressed
arch with a stone frame, two access
steps, and a base of tiles along the
whole façade.
A window can be seen in the east
annexe at the level of the door and
above this there is a ceramic panel
dedicated to St Joseph. The façade
ends in a lintel topped with a tower
containing the bell. Its only decoration
is some two-colour boxes on the exterior.
Its festival is held on the 19th of March.
This day is very important, because
it is paired with the celebration of las
Fallas, which have a long history in
Pego.
Saint Anthony’s Chapel
Camí de Sant Antoni, s/n
The chapel is located around 2 km
from the town, in the old Arab farmstead.
Built during the reign of Philip II (14th
and 15th centuries) to attend to the
spiritual needs of the Moors that
converted to the Catholic faith. Its
architecture is typical of the so called
“chapels of the conquest”, belonging
to Catalan Gothic.
It has a basilica plan, straight apse and
a square portico.
Inside, there is a diaphragm arch with
a short transom, in the centre of the
room. The altar is located on a raised
area; in the square apse is found an
altar with two composite columns and
a smooth entablature, with an image
of St Anthony. In the corners are two
niches with round arches painted gold,
dedicated to St Joseph and Our Lady
of Fatima.
The portico is made up of two access
arches, with a ceramic tile that is dedicated
to St Anthony Abbot.
This is celebrated on the 17th of
January, the day of Sant Antoni del
Porquet, with a Porrat (a market selling
sweets and nuts) around the chapel.
There is a tradition of visiting it with
pets and, to cure any illnesses they
may have, going around the building
three times with the animal.
