40 YEARS
Jim Owens has seen a lot of
craziness in his forty-plus years

working at Eskimo Joe’s, and none
of it ever ruffled his feathers. “The
wow pink rock wall used to be outside, and kids
would put chalk on their fingers and
climb all the way to the top, crazy!”
black Jim took a job as a bartender in his
junior year at OSU back when Joe’s
had only eight employees.

“I knew he was the kind of
person I wanted representing
my company,” says Stan
Clark, Eskimo Joe’s founder.
“He was laid back, calm and
friendly.” Jim describes the
Eskimo Joe’s he first went to
work for as, “kind of a fun
hippy joint with great
music. Stan and his friends
played cuts from the best
albums, and it gave the
place a nice vibe.”
Jim’s co-workers
describe him as funny,
warm and most of
all, easy-going.
“He’s a ‘Dead
Head,’” says his
son, Ryan. Jim
may have a
Touch of Gray
but after 40
years he’s still
smilin.’
