subsided, he again attempted to proceed with his<br />

defense. He had not gone far till he had occasion to<br />

appeal to <strong>the</strong> Scriptures; <strong>the</strong> storm was that<br />

moment renewed, <strong>and</strong> with greater violence than<br />

before. Some of <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs shouted out<br />

accusations, o<strong>the</strong>rs broke into peals of derisive<br />

laughter. Again <strong>Huss</strong> was silent. "He is dumb,"<br />

said his enemies, who forgot that <strong>the</strong>y had come<br />

<strong>the</strong>re as his judges. "I am silent," said <strong>Huss</strong>,<br />

"because I am unable to make myself audible midst<br />

so great a noise." "All," said Lu<strong>the</strong>r, referring in his<br />

characteristic style to this scene, "all worked<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves into rage like wild boars; <strong>the</strong> bristles of<br />

The minds of <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs were too perturbed to<br />

be able to agree on <strong>the</strong> course to be followed. It<br />

was found impossible to restore order, <strong>and</strong> after a<br />

short sitting <strong>the</strong> assembly broke up.<br />
