170 Arturo Álvarez Arturo Álvarez is an established recognized creator both inside and outside of Spain, by his conceptual contributions to the world of design lightening. He was born in Pontevedra, Spain, in 1964. From the beginning he develops an own style with strong personality. He handles shapes, volumes and light sources fluently in a simple and elegant way, masterfully mixing them and bringing a new vision of creative lighting, coming to conceive in the spaces surprising scenographic and light staging. Currently he continues to explore different lines of work and expression. In the early nineties he gets interested in the flat glass and learns the techniques of stained glass and tiffany for making lamps. He starts creating luminaries, from ancient techniques, but with a language of its time, contemporary, with Art deco and Art nouveu touches. Over the years he walks and identifies with the Bauhaus concepts of joining and reviewing shapes, volumes, prospects and plans to a careful craftwork. There are three defined times in the career of Arturo Alvarez. In the early years he explores and works with figurative concepts based on nature. In a second time he progresses toward abstraction exploring simple geometric shapes without abandoning references to nature, it appears the female body, a theme that is repeated and which he keeps on researching along the years. The recognition for more than 20 years of career path came with two consecutive “Good Design” awards, the first one in 2008 for Gea and the next, in 2009 for Fluo, convened by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. In 2013, in Las Vegas, he also achieved an HD Product Design Competition Award in the lighting category. In the last ten years he has been conducting a comprehensive experimental and research work to develop his own materials that allow him a more creative freedom and expressiveness. He takes them out of their common uses, mixing them and transforming them into something new and unique. He creates and patents SIMETECH®, a translucent material which can be molded to obtain different textures. Arturo Álvarez is currently developing new forms of expression, going deeper into the world of art, exhibiting all around the world his artworks, which use the light as the guiding thread and the human being as the protagonist. Arturo Álvarez es un consolidado creador reconocido tanto dentro como fuera de España, por sus aportaciones conceptuales al mundo de la iluminación de diseño. Nace en la provincia de Pontevedra, España, en el año 1964. Desarrolla desde el principio un estilo propio y reconocible, de fuerte personalidad. Maneja con soltura formas, volúmenes y fuentes de luz de una forma sencilla y elegante, mezclandolos con maestría y aportando una nueva visión de la iluminación creativa, llegando a concebir en los espacios montajes lumínicos y escenográficos sorprendentes. Actualmente sigue explorando distintas líneas de trabajo y expresión. A principios de los años noventa se interesa por el vidrio plano y aprende las técnicas del vitreaux y tiffany para la elaboración de lámparas. Comienza a crear luminarias, a partir de técnicas antiguas, pero con un lenguaje de su tiempo, contemporáneo, al principio con guiños al Art deco y Art nouveu. Con los años camina y se identifica con los conceptos de la Bauhaus uniendo y revisando formas, volúmenes, perspectivas y planos a un trabajo artesanal y cuidado. En la trayectoria de Arturo Álvarez hay tres momentos definidos. Los primeros años explora y trabaja con conceptos figurativos, basados en la naturaleza. En una segunda época avanza hacia la abstracción explorando formas geométricas simples, sin abandonar a su vez las referencias a la naturaleza, aparece el cuerpo de la mujer, una temática que se repite y en la que sigue indagando a lo largo de los años. Los reconocimientos a más de veinte años de carrera llegan con dos premios consecutivos “Good Design”, en 2008 por el diseño de Gea y en el 2009 por Fluo, concedidos por The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. En 2013, en Las Vegas, le otorgan el HD Product Design Competition Award en la categoría Iluminación. En los últimos diez años viene realizando una labor exhaustiva de experimentación e investigación desarrollando sus propios materiales que le permitan mayor libertad creativa y expresividad. Los descontextualiza de sus usos habituales, los mezcla y los transforma creando algo nuevo y único. Crea y patenta SIMETECH®, un material translúcido, que puede ser moldeable para generar grandes volúmenes. En la actualidad Arturo Álvarez está desarrollando nuevas formas de expresión, adentrándose en el mundo del arte y exponiendo por todo el mundo sus obras que tienen la luz como hilo conductor y al ser humano como protagonista.
