Nursery: The Oxfordshire Chilli Farm, UK 

The Oxfordshire Chilli Farm (Plantasia) have been growing capsicums using AutoPot Watering 

Systems for 7 years. AutoPot Systems offer growing solutions to each variety under cultivation. 

For large ‘super-hot’ varieties the XL System provides ideal size and adjustability. Habanero and 

Scotch Bonnets are served by the 1Pot System. Sweet peppers are grown using the high-wire 

method in easy2grow with 15L pots instead of the 8.5L as this suits these capsicums better.

Growing tips 

System assembly 

• When connecting 6mm or 16mm pipe always ensure that the end of 

the pipe is dipped in hot water first, this will soften the pipe and allow 

you to connect fittings with ease. 

• When potting up, use a small brush to remove any soil stuck to the 

sides and bottom of the pots before you place them into the tray. 

This will ensure the AQUAvalve is clean and free of floating 

growing medium. 

• The 15 litre pots used in the 1Pot module and the 8.5 litre pots used 

in the easy2grow system are interchangeable and can be used in 

either tray design. 

Position of the tank/FlexiTank/reservoir 

• Raise your reservoir to a minimum of 150mm above the 

highest AQUAvalve. 

• Re-fill the reservoir when there is approximately a third of solution left. 

Never let the reservoir run empty. 

• When refilling the reservoir turn the tap off. Refill then leave for 30-60 

minutes. Then turn the tap back on. This procedure prevents any 

sediment being pulled through the pipes whilst refilling. 

• Placing an air stone in the reservoir can raise pH levels of the 

nutrient solution. Instead, use a water pump to agitate the solution, if 

required. 

Recommended plant spacing 

• We recommend using… 

- four 1Pot modules per square metre of growing space. 

- four easy2grow modules (8 plants) per square metre of 

growing space. 

- one or two 1Pot XL modules per square metre of growing space. 

• Growing over 6 plants? Consider increasing the size of your reservoir 

and pipework to 16mm (standard hosepipe). 

Establishing your plants 

• Establish the root system by hand watering young plants in their pots 

before opening the tap on the reservoir. 

• For best results pot up your plants and hand feed them with water, 

if growing in soil, or a weak nutrient solution if growing in an inert 

medium like coco or rock wool. 

• Establish and hand feed young plants for the following time periods, 

water sparingly and feel the weight of the pot if you are unsure if 

water is required. 

Guideline only - dependant on environmental conditions 

- 8.5L (easy2grow) – 5-7 days 

- 15L (1Pot) – 7-12 days 

- 25L (1Pot XL) – 10-14 days 

Choosing the correct nutrient 

• Use a good quality clean mineral nutrient. This will ensure that 

pipework remains free from blockages and AQUAvalves will work 

effectively throughout the entire growing season. 

• Mineral additives and boosters can be used provided that they 

are not too thick and gloopy, as these could block pipework. As a 

general rule of thumb; if the additive is so thick that it needs to be 

mixed in warm water before adding to the reservoir, it’s 

not suitable. To test put a teaspoon of the liquid in a glass of water 

overnight, if by the morning it has separated out then it is not 

suitable, as this will happen in the pipework. 

• Do not use liquid organic nutrients, they will degrade and break down 

in the reservoir. This could potentially block pipework. 

• It is now possible to grow organically in AutoPots thanks to the 

introduction of slow-release organic fertilisers. These organic 

compounds are mixed into the growing medium and release food 

for the plant throughout the growing season. You simply add water 

to the reservoir, no liquid nutrient is required. We have successfully 

trialled BioTabs organic feed and achieved excellent results. 

Regular maintenance 

• Check each tray every other week to ensure that the AQUAvalve is 

clean and free from floating growing media and plant roots. 

• Using the end taps, drain off a litre of nutrient solution once per week; 

this will avoid minerals settling in the pipework. 

• Use a cleaning additive if required. 

• When disassembling the system at the end of the growing season use 

hot water to aid the removal of pipework from the AQUAvalve nozzles. 

Submerge the still-assembled pipe and valve in the hot water. Once 

loosened remove the pipework by pulling it straight away from the 

nozzle. Avoid twisting the end of the pipe away from the nozzle. 

Clean the system after every season 

• AQUAvalves can be scrubbed using a toothbrush or even placed in 

the dishwasher. 

• Ensure that silicones are removed from the AQUAvalve before 

cleaning and are only replaced when the AQUAvalve is 

completely dry. 

• To prevent sediment blockages, replace 6mm pipework 

after each cycle. 

• Use a pipe cleaner or paper clip to clean inside the AQUAvalve 

nozzle. This will remove any build up that has occured. 

Flushing out pots and draining the system 

• Flushing your pots prior to harvesting is not necessary, simply add pH 

balanced water to the reservoir. 

• In extreme circumstances of over feeding, or nutrient lock-out, flush 

your pots; simply remove from the tray and pour several litres of pH 

balanced water into the pot and allow to drain, then re-start at half 

strength feed for the 1st week.

Growing tips continued 

Using AirDomes 

• Use a large air pump or compressor to power AirDomes in multiple 

pot systems. Over 6 AirDomes use 16mm pipe for better air 

distribution. 

• Fill your pots with a growing medium that has added perlite or clay as 

this will help disperse the air throughout the entire root zone. 

• Avoid peat based compost as this will compress, reducing the 

effectiveness of the AirDome. 

• Avoid pumping cold air through the roots of your plants; place air 

pumps away from cold floor surfaces and, if the night temperatures in 

your grow space drop, use a timer to turn off the pump at night. 

AQUAbox tips 

• Ensure the AQUAbox is level in the soil by using the circular spirit level 

in the lid. 

• Connect multiple AQUAbox Straights or Spyders to one water supply 

to irrigate a larger area. 

• Ensure each strip of capillary matting slopes away from the AQUAbox 

at a slight downward gradient. 

• Roots will attach themselves to the matting. For best results, replace 

capillary matting every season. 

Substrate guide 

• Rule of thumb – always use a free draining substrate. 

• AutoPot Watering Systems are extremely versatile and can be used 

with the growing medium / substrate of your choice. Whether growing 

in soil, coco or hydroponically our systems exceed 

all expectations. 

• An ideal substrate for use in AutoPot systems is a 50% mix of perlite 

or clay pebbles with either soil or coco. In growing trials we have 

cultivated plants in a vast range of substrates from coral to denim and 

even pumice stone! 

• Whichever substrate you decide to use make sure the mix is 

absorbent, light, fluffy and free draining.

Substrate Tips 

• 1inch (25mm) of washed gravel or clay pebbles SHOULD be used at 

the bottom of the pot for additional drainage. 

• Peat based composts will compress when used in the systems, 

reducing the oxygen content in the root zone. Mix in perlite, clay 

pebbles or gravel to lighten the compost and improve aeration. 

• Always use a good quality soil or coco from a reputable brand. 

• Using clay pebbles, whether at the bottom of the pot as additional 

drainage or as part of a mix, MUST be pH stable. Be aware that 

certain brands are NOT pH stable and will increase the pH of the 

water in the tray; this will negatively affect plant growth. 

• When using CocoMats please note that they should be treated before 

use. Submerge and soak in pH 4.5 water for 24-48hrs. Then rinse 

and use with pH 5.5 water.
