Port Hope Visitor Guide 2019
This is a place where you can slow down. If the weekend was a place, if the weekend was a philosophy, a conversation, a memory – this is where it would be. Port Hope is a place where you can shake hands with a farmer, snuggle a goat, take a dip in a cool lake, eat a meal fresh-picked from a local field, and breathe it all in. There’s room here. There’s quiet. There’s slow. And there are more ways to enjoy your day than weekends in a year. Come enjoy craft food, drinks and sunsets by the water. Explore quaint streets and scenic country roads. It’s the weekend.

There’s nothing quite like a
field tomato picked that
morning to top your salad.
Or wild leeks sautéed with shallots
served with trout raised in springfed
ponds. Did we say our dining is
fresh and tasty? This is real farmto-table
country where restaurants
partner with local producers for
natural whole foods, great flavours
and laidback charm.
DRINKS
A festive beverage or a tall glass of lemonade
on a patio can make for a perfect afternoon
outing or evening on the town. We like to toast
to good times and good conversation. Sample
craft beers at Local No90 and The Social, try
cider, ales or Guinness at the Beamish House or
spirits with pool tables and music at the retro
Ganaraska Hotel. And Turtle John’s is a locals’
hangout to watch a game and relax with
friends. We’re also devoted to coffee culture
with a bunch of cafes for a full-bodied cup
(Coffee Public has amazing house-roasted
beans), specialty lattes and blended icy drinks.
DINING
No question, if you love to eat out, this
is your kind of town. We’re surrounded
by agriculture—farms, orchards and
waterways—so eating the season’s best
is just what we do. It’s also inspiring for our
chefs to get creative and wow you with
unique dishes and homestyle favourites.
Nookie’s Soul Kitchen has crazy good
blackened salmon and slow-cooked ribs.
There’s fine dining at the Carlyle with
signature entrees like the bacon-wrapped
Laying Lion Tenderloin, and Trattoria Gusto
has beautiful risotto and pasta to enjoy on
a patio that overlooks the rushing waters
of the Ganaraska River. The landmark Jim’s
Pizza is a family tradition. We could go on…
SPECIALTY FOODS
Sometimes you just need a lemon square
(thank you, Queenies Bake Shop). Or to-die-for
homemade fudge in flavours like Salted Nut
Roll or Cookie Dough from Maggie Moose, finecrafted
pure cacao chocolates and lavender
(oh yes!) gelato from Mercury Chocolates,
or Dreamers signature caramel-chocolate
cookies. To balance your sweet tooth, check
out the cold-pressed superfood juices at
Electric Juice Company and healthy nut and
fruit mixes around the corner at Suntree. And
you can’t miss the countryside gourmet shop,
Herma’s Fine Food & Gifts, where Herma Ender
has choice meats, cheeses and the perfect
condiments for charcuterie, along with all
things delicious for picnics and family feasts.
