Judges’ Comments: ‘Dalton’s characters and writing style are what make this book the standout for me.
The language and phrasing used truly evoke a sense of place and time, and the numerous anecdotes
and smaller details connect you to a cast of unique characters that are difficult to forget. The book
balanced wit and emotion excellently, and his cast of characters were three-dimensional. This book was
so incredibly enjoyable and unique, and I am very excited to read Dalton’s work in the future.’
‘A thoroughly original novel, both funny and sad, Boy Swallows Universe explores good & bad, suburban
life, dysfunctional families and the criminal underworld through the eyes of a boy. Is Eli a good person?
We see him grow up; coming to terms with himself, family and those around him in a completely
unexpected but heart-warming story. Trent Dalton has written a novel for our times…… for all time.’
