DIAG
CHARITY STROLL OFF
With the start of the 2018-2019 school year, students are greeted back to
campus with a myriad of events from various organizations. Most orgs, both
old and new, use this time to fill the collective community’s schedules with
programs geared toward welcoming. This is especially prevalent in the black
community with orgs like BSU, NAACP, and NSBE using their preexisting
platform to their advantage. They convince people to redirect their feelings of
dread associated with the rigors of academia toward excitement of campus
engagement. Greek life capitalizes around this time by being extremely
sociable to further establish themselves as the main forces for campus
interaction. The Diag Charity Stroll Off is a staple program created by the
brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Epsilon Chapter. For seven years,
it has been an event, initially for the summer, that uses this pivotal time of
welcome week to show the campus a glimpse of greek life. This does so by
incorporating the various orgs in the Divine 9----and sometimes other greek
councils----to display a step/stroll presentation. This year, due to the lack of
representation of all the D9 on campus, the stroll off didn’t have as much
participation as previous years. Nevertheless, it was executed extremely
well with performances from: Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta
Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, Lambda Theta Alpha, etc.
Each eligibly participating org earned enough money for their respective
charities, with Sigma Gamma Rho making the most. It is safe to say that, for
the neos’ first show, it was riveting!
Miss Black & Old Gold Pageant
On that Friday of Alpha Week, the annual Miss Black
and Old Gold Scholarship Pageant took place. The
committee (Bro. President D’Andre Simpson, Bro.
Isaiah Land, Bro Oladele Gaba, and Bro Charles Harris)
took it upon themselves to up the ante on production
and fluidity of the program. This year, the brothers had
seven beautiful and talented contestants from both the
month preparing the girls to showcase their poise and
honing their talents to be presented to campus. When
it was showtime, all the girls were ready to compete for
the title of this years Miss Black and Old Gold. The
location of the pageant was at Mendelssohn Theatre
and saw an upgrade in production value. It allowed the
brothers
to coordinate with the Michigan League and present
the girls on a main stage, as opposed to last year at
Palmer Commons. The event ran smoothly with Bro.
Jon-David Graves and 2017 Miss Black and Gold
Lindsay Sharpe hosting, this year. Attendance saw a
drastic increase, primarily due to the change in venue
and more seating. All seven contestants were riveting
in their performances, diction, and poise, allowing for
a truly entertaining experience. The event concluded
with Ms. Madison McBride being crowned as 2018’s
Miss Black and Old Gold with her powerful and
stunning singing. Ms. Charles Jameson and Ms. Skylar
Wilkes won Miss Gold and Miss Black, respectively.
increase the scholarship amount from $500 to $1000 for
next year!
