MAKE A MICRO:BIT
CONTROLLED FAN
The ideal project for summer break or when you
need to cool down! For this project, you will need to use
the motor shield in
combination with the propellor and the mini motor
from the micro:bit starter kit.
Tip: create a cool case for the fan by using
some cardboard or a 3D printer!
LEARN
WHAT DOES I/O STAND FOR? AND WHAT IS IT?
I/O stands for Input and Output! An input is a device that sends information to a computer system for processing, and
an output device reproduces or displays the results of that processing. Input devices only allow for input of data to
a computer and output devices only receive the output of data from another device. In our case; the micro:bit is the
computer system which we program and an input can be a temperature sensor or microphone because these are devices that can
receive information. The output can be a servo motor or an LED because they send out information like movement and light.
MAKE DIFFERENT TEMPERATURE DISPLAYS
Keep a good eye on your room’s temperature by using some
simple I/O’s from our micro:bit starter kit!
In this project you can display the temperature in two different ways.
Either use the LED ring to burn red when the temperature exceeds +
24°C and blue when it’s colder. Or for a more precise display, you
can use the servo shield and get creative with cardboard to make a
scale. The servo’s arrow will hence tell you what temperature it is.
Find the sample code and all explanations on
manuals.velleman.eu and impress your teachers and
parents with this cool science project.
KEEP YOUR PLANTS HAPPY WITH MICRO:BIT
No more dead plants on our watch! With this ingeniuos
project, you will be able to read whether or not your plant
is moisty enough or if it is in need of some water!
Use the soil moisture breakout board to inspect your plant’s
soil and make it report to your micro:bit. If the plant is not
happy and in desperate need of water, the red LED from the
breakout board will light up and the OLED breakout board will
tell you what’s wrong. If all is well, the green LED will shine
bright. All these components can be found in the micro:bit
tinker kit and the tutorial is available on manuals.velleman.eu!
