H e r second album For Love made her an island radio staple with hits like “Higher Than the Clouds,” “Simple Love Song” and “Come Over Love.” All of which got her on an episode of Hawaii 5-O and has seen her tour with Bruno Mars, J a c k Johnson, Z i g g y Marley, Babyface, Sugar Ray and others. Other favorite tunes include “Right Love, Wrong Time”and “Like the Way it Feels,” blending her signature pop, R&B and reggae musical style. She’s even headlined the 2011 Pro Bowl halftime show at Aloha Stadium and sang the National Anthem at Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Vikings games. Tickets $20-$40. T.S.O.L. (aka True Sounds of Liberty) is at The Cave May 11. Another punk icon from the late 1970’s, the band hailing from Long Beach has dabbled in hard rock and just about every form of punk along the way. Original members Jack Grisham, Ron Emory and Mike Roche are joined by Greg Kuehn and Antonio Val Hernandez. Songs like “Abolish Government,” “Superficial Love” and “World War III” marked T.S.O.L.’s early efforts were followed by more polished sounds on “Just Like Me” and “Flowers by the Door.” The band’s music has been featured in movies like “The Runnin’ Kind,” “Suburbia,” “The Return of the Living Dead” and “Dangerously Close.” Tickets $15. The band’s spot-on reproductions of Zeppelin classics like “Rock and Roll,” “Black Dog” and “Stairway to Heaven” caught the eyes and ears of none other than guitarist Jimmy Page, who invited Led Zepagain to attend the original band’s 2007 reunion concert in London. Drummer Jason Bonham also put his stamp of approval on Led Zepagain, sitting in for a show. Recently Led Zepagain returned to AXS-TV to perform the iconic Led Zeppelin IV album in its entirety. Having played around the world including Japan, Russia, Germany, several South American countries and throughout the country, the group performs to packed houses. More proof? Led Zepagain has well over a million iTunes downloads to its credit and the band’s version of “Kashmir” is abolutely amazing. Big Bear Today May 2019—Page 9 Feed need for speed at Speedway At age 15 AJ Wayne isn’t old enough to drive but he’s already got a license. To race, in fact, at Big Bear Speedway, where he had the track’s second fastest time of the day one Saturday, even as he counts down days till he gets a learner’s permit. Better yet, his clocking of 25.77 was 14th fastest of the month at Big Bear Speedway, faster even than his dad Matt’s time of 26.02. Truly a quarter-second makes all the difference in the world when you’re racing against the clock! The Valencia residents had an advantage: both are avid kart racers already, frequenting indoor tracks for years. Their experience was evident as each whipped through hairpin turns and shot down the back straightaway. As fast as the Waynes were driving, they were still a full second off the track’s fastest recorded time, 24.80. More typical race times are in the 30-40 second range or even more, with only the fastest breaking the 30 second mark. “The key is to slow down into the corners and then accelerate out of them,” Matt said. “At times my wheels were drifting around the corner instead of making good contact,” AJ added. “That’s the fun part but it’s not ideal for the fastest times.” Feed your need for speed at Big Bear Speedway, as racers negotiate high-tech Sodi Karts around a one-fifth mile Grand Prix-style track. These aren’t your parent’s go-karts from yesteryear; Sodi’s RT8 is a fully featured vehicle with self-adjusting hydraulic brakes and vacuum fuel pumps that come straight from the automotive industry. The karts handle like race cars and the Honda Whisper Motors generate amazing power, enough for cars to lay rubber through turns though virtually impossible to roll. Nereyda Bernal of Los Angeles on the other hand wasn’t trying to set any records. She was riding in one of Big Bear Speedway’s double karts with dual steering wheels with nine-year-old son Julio and she let him handle most of the navigation. “Driving double allowed him to get experience,” she said. “So I mostly just pressed the gas pedal. He kept saying faster and I was already freaking out! This was my first time racing a kart.” The racing experience at Big Bear’s fastest attraction begins in the base lodge where first time guests view a two-and-ahalf minute safety video. Then they’re issued Big Bear Speedway licenses—complete with picture—good for one year and assigned a heat number. After donning head socks and helmets adorned with visors and last minute instructions, the pit crew waves drivers onto the track in staggered starts, no more than 11 cars per heat. First lap is not timed so racers can get a feel for the car and track. Timing starts with the second lap and drivers get about seven to nine laps or more depending on how fast they go. At the end of the heat drivers are waved in to the pit area where they get a printout of their time and the six fastest times in the heat. The leader in karting, Sodi Karts balance speed and safety with four point seat belts and Extra Enhanced remote controls so the pit crew can shut down or throttle back any or all karts at any time for safety. Big Bear Speedway has 17 single karts and six doubles which have two steering wheels and two brake pedals for training or parent riding with a child. Times are posted for all to see plus there’s family priced snack bar and video games. Big Bear Speedway membership is $20 (double kart $25) which includes license valid for one year, one race and mandatory head sock worn under the helmet. Subsequent visits cost $15 per race or buy credits in advance which are stored on your license for a year and save up to 30%. Big Bear Speedway is open Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m.-5 p.m., till 9 p.m. May 25-26. Open Memorial Day 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Daily operations begin June 8.
