An Encampment to Remember in the Upper Snake River Valley<br />

Join SUP members from around the country at the <strong>2001</strong> National Encampment, held on Ricks<br />

College (soon to be renamed BYU-Idaho) campus August 16-18. Keynote speaker will be Elder<br />

David A. Bednar Encampment highlights include a welcome banquet, brunch before tours,<br />

dinner with music and historical speakers, an awards luncheon, a Presidents<br />

Banquet, and other inspiring and interesting activities.<br />

Early settlers, including Thomas E. Ricks, were<br />

l sent to the upper valley as the railroad moved<br />

north from Utah. Rexburg was founded as<br />

HI a Mormon settlement and was the site<br />

|H|HP of the academy that later become<br />

Ricks College and is now to become<br />

SSfft BYU-Idaho.<br />

Four bus tours are available; participants must sign up for tours when registering (all tours are led by experienced guides and a light lunch is provided).<br />

■ Tbur 41; Hess Heritage Museum, a wonderful tour of the Dan<br />

and Mary Hess ranch, its multiple-building museum, and the<br />

beautiful Upper Mesa Falls near Ashton, Idaho.<br />

■ Tour 42: Teton Flood Museum and the Teton Dam site (a<br />

detailed presentation of the collapse of the Teton Dam in 1976 and<br />

its effect on the downriver communities).<br />

■ Tour 4,3; “From Trappings to Sugar Beets.3" Visit the sites of the<br />

early history and development of the valley.<br />

■ 7bur 44: “<strong>Pioneer</strong> Irrigation in the Snake River Valley.” Visit the<br />

sites of great historical importance in this critical development of<br />

the area’s growth and success.<br />

In addition, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are nearbyt as are Craters of the Moon, Island Park> and many other areas of natural<br />

beauty and interest. Special arrangements have also been made for encampment participants to visit the Shirley Wood Art Shops,<br />
