SURVIVING THE ‘VERSE / MAKING A PLEDGE
MAKING A PLEDGE
WHAT’S RIGHT FOR ME?
You need a “Game Package” to access the Star Citizen
Universe. The two most common (and cheapest) are the
CO Mustang Alpha Starter Pack, and the RSI Aurora
MR Starter Pack. Each will set you back about 45 US
dollars, and both allow you the option to add on
Squadron 42, Star Citizen’s singleplayer campaign, for
an additional 20 bucks.
What should I pick?
Both the Aurora MR and the Mustang Alpha are relatively
similar in the grand scheme of things -- Weak, and
something you’ll probably upgrade out of later. But,
before that, we might as well make an educated decision
about what’s right for us. So, what’s the difference?
Based solely on appearance, you’d probably get each
ship’s focus mixed up -- The Consolidated Outland
Mustang Alpha is a cargo focused ship, while the
Roberts Space Industries Aurora MR is considered a
light fighter. Both boast very similar weaponry: The
Mustang, coming stock with a single Size 1 turret (x2
gimballed M3A Laser Cannon,) and the Aurora, shipping
with two fixed Size 1 weapons (x2 fixed M3A Laser
Cannons.) Both ships also afford players the option
to add two additional Size 1 weapons to their hulls.
The Mustang is slightly longer, at 21.5m, while the
Aurora sits right at 18m. The Aurora is faster overall,
with a top speed of 1210m/s, compared to the Mustang’s
1160m/s. This is hardly a difference to sway your
opinion though, as they are both very fast. Finally,
the Mustang can carry 6 SCU (More on this later) of
cargo, while the Aurora MR doesn’t have any capacity to
carry cargo at all.
While I can’t tell you what to pick, I always suggest
the Aurora MR over the Mustang Alpha, for a simple
reason: Many missions in Star Citizen require the
player to move around carryable boxes, which have to be
physically placed on a ship and transported to their
destination. The Aurora MR has stairs and doors, which
allow you to easily bring packages on board and set
them just in front of your bed. The Mustang, however,
has you enter through a ladder and canopy, meaning
you aren’t able to carry and store the small boxes on
your ship. At least, not easily. While this may seem
silly to someone who is new or brand new, I can say
from experience it’s incredibly frustrating when nearly
every mission in your realm of possibilities requires a
box of some sort to be moved, and you have no capacity
to move it.
Bottom line though, and being truthful? They both suck.
Pick the suck you’d rather deal with, and upgrade it
later.
As a side note, if you are willing to jump in for a bit
of extra cash, there are larger ships sold with game
access as well. The Aegis Avenger Titan and the MISC
Reliant Kore are both excellent choices for just about
30/40 extra US dollars and will provide you with a much
more enjoyable experience, in a ship that can properly
stand a chance. If you **really** wanna go big or go
home, I’d suggest the Cutlass Black. The pledge is 115
US Dollars, but it’s an excellent ship for the price
(One that I personally keep as a part of my fleet,)
providing you with the means to do just about anything,
including space to load rovers, transport cargo
and people, and even hold your own in some serious
skirmishes.
