Aix-en-Provence is a university city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur
region of southern France. It was the birthplace of Post-Impressionist
painter Paul Cézanne, and a walking trail links sites including his
childhood home, Jas de Bouffan, and his former studio, Atelier
Cézanne. The white limestone Sainte-Victoire mountain overlooking the
city and the surrounding countryside were frequent subjects
of his works.
Nice, capital of the French
Riviera, skirts the pebbly shores
of the Baie des Anges. Founded
by the Greeks and later a retreat
for 19th-century Europe’s elite, the
city today balances old-world
decadence with modern urban
energy. Its sunshine and liberal
attitude have long attracted
artists, whose work hangs in its
museums. With vibrant markets
and diverse restaurants, it’s also
renowned for its food.
Monaco is an independent
microstate on France’s
Mediterranean coastline known
for its glitzy casinos, yacht-lined
harbor and prestigious Grand Prix
motor race, which runs through
Monaco’s streets once a year.
Monte Carlo, its major district,
has an elegant belle epoque
casino complex, ornate opera
house and luxe hotels, boutiques,
nightclubs and French and
Italian restaurants.
