Taskent Nature Park (TNP) is a privately funded,
non-profit, social responsibility project founded
in Kyrenia in February 2016. The initial objective
of the TNP was to create awareness of wildlife
and nature conservation in Cyprus.
Once the number of young and injured wild
animals brought to the park multiplied, a need
for a professional wildlife rehabilitation centre
in Cyprus was realised, and so the Wildlife
Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC) was
established in July 2016.
In February 2017 WRRC was asked to rehabilitate a Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) by
Near East University Animal Hospital, marking the foundation date of the Cyprus Marinelife
Centre (CMC).
The growing need for a hospital and laboratory specialising in Wildlife in Cyprus was
understood by the expanding team of professionals in WRRC and CMC. This resulted in the
decision to establish a purpose specific Wildlife Hospital & Research Laboratory (WHRL)
which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2019.
The development of all these structures has led to the formation of the Cyprus Wildlife
Research Institute (CWRI) in 2018 as the coordinating authority for all these organisations.
The Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute actively conducts research which is presented in the
following pages.
The CWRI is aware of the importance of human resources in order to undertake systematic,
multi-disciplinary, long-term surveys of wildlife and habitats. For this reason, CWRI invites
both national and international volunteers from any background to train on subject specific
skills and knowledge thus, to participate in the observation and conservation of wildlife in
Cyprus. Project funding for CWRI is sought at all levels in order to maintain and expand its
capacity as a state-of-the-art rescue, rehabilitation, release and research (4R’s) facility.
This report is mainly a review of all 4R’s carried out within WRRC and CMC throughout 2018
which also marks the first publication of the CWRI Annual Report, to be published annually.
