MATURE DISCIPLES MINISTRY
BRIEF HISTORY
Zelma Smith-Dexter and Muriel Eaton approached Reverend Dr. Carlyle Fielding
Stewart, III, in January 1999 regarding a Hope Church senior group. Reverend Betty
Whitely was appointed by Dr. Stewart to form a ministry for persons fifty and older.
Reverend Whitely selected ten seasoned Hope members to meet June 25, 1999, with Dr.
Stewart in attendance. Dr. Stewart gave encouragement by saying this was the
beginning of a great adventure and asked to be an honorary member. All 50 plus
persons male and female are welcome to be a part. Our purpose is to give support and
have camaraderie with those who have similar experiences and interests through
religious, social and educational activities; like short bus trips, educational forums,
crafts, bake sales, seminars, workshop and nursing home visits. We have added Black
History exhibits, Senior Day during the Southfield Festival of Hope, Grandparents’
Luncheon, a prayer breakfast and Christmas luncheon. Our meetings are held the
second Tuesday of each month at one o’clock or join us for any of our activities.
June 23, 2019 is the celebration of our 20 th anniversary. God continues to bless our
ministry spiritually and in all of our many endeavors.
