Eric Marienthal Quartet and
groups to perform during a threeday
concert series at two sites on
the shores of Lake Arrowhead on
August 22, 23 and 24.
In a landmark move for jazz
and music education in the mountain
communities around Lake Arrowhead,
California, the Blue Jay
Jazz Foundation will hold the Blue
Jay Jazz Festival on three consecutive
days for the first time in its 19-
year history.
“Festival 2019: Takin’ it
Lakeside” will be held at the water’s
edge in the Arrowhead Lake
Association’s Tavern Bay Beach
Club on the evenings of Thursday,
August 22 and Friday, August 23
and at the Lake Arrowhead Resort
overlooking the lake on Saturday
afternoon, August 24.
The Cal State University
San Bernardino Jazz Ensemble and
the LA Jones Quartet take the stage
Thursday, August 22, followed by
the Eric Marienthal Quartet on Friday,
August 23. On Saturday, August
24, the Festival moves to the
pool patio of the Lake Arrowhead
Resort for a late morning brunch
concert by the Yuko Mabuchi Trio.
The Festival is part of the
Blue Jay Jazz Foundation’s mission
to foster jazz appreciation and support
music education in the mountain
communities through scholarships
and instrument lending.
Joining the Foundation as co-presenter
of the Yuko Mabuchi Trio
on August 24 is the Bill and Dinah
Ruch Family Foundation. Major
additional underwriting has been
received from longtime Festival
supporter Lynne Wilson & Associates.
Early-bird prices for single
ticket start at $25 ($10 for full-time
students), with tables of eight available
as low as $230. Tickets can be
purchased online at bluejayjazz.
eventbrite.com. Regular pricing begins
on August 1.
In the great Blue Jay Jazz
Festival party tradition, guests at
the two Tavern Bay concerts may
bring their own picnic baskets of
food and beverages. Both nights
will offer eight-person tables and
individual seating, with the party atmosphere
enhanced by a large area
for dancing to a broad spectrum of
jazz-based music.
The Artists and Schedule
The Festival kicks off Thursday,
August 22 with the high-energy
CSUSB Jazz Ensemble performing
a range of jazz styles including
swing, funk, Latin, vocal jazz, and
ballads. It has appeared at regional
jazz festivals including the Western
States Jazz Festival, Reno Jazz Festival,
and the Oceanside Jazz Festival.
Jones, pioneer of a left-handed
blues guitar style that blends Texas
jump swing with West Coast
traditions while remaining deeply
rooted in 1950s Chicago Blues.
Joining Jones on vocals is Blues
Music Award-nominated Adrianna
Marie on upright bass, with San Diego-based
pocket drummer Marcus
Bashore and saxophonist Jerry Donato,
a Phoenix-based session musician
known for torrid sax swipes
and Texas gutbucket honk.
On Friday, August 23 Grammy
Award-winning saxophonist
Eric Marienthal makes his Blue
Jay Jazz Festival debut leading a
quartet featuring keyboardist Mitch
Forman, bassist Andre Berry, and
drummer Joel Taylor. Marienthal
began his professional career with
famed New Orleans trumpeter Al
Hirt before joining the Chick Corea
Elektric Band. The six CDs he recorded
with that historic jazz-fusion
group earned him his two Grammy
Awards. His many solo recordings
earned an additional five Grammy
nominations, and produced nine National
Contemporary Jazz Radio Top
Ten songs, including three at #1.
Yuko Mabuchi Trio
Committed to music education,
Marienthal regularly includes
a master class for local students in
cities where he performs. In support
of the Blue Jay Jazz Festival’s
outreach he will conduct a Master
Class for mountain area students
at Rim High School on August 22.
Every July he organizes fundraising
concerts for High Hopes, an Orange
County non-profit assisting people
who have suffered traumatic head
injuries. To date he has raised well
over $2 million.
On Saturday beginning at
Eric Marienthal
11 a.m., the Festival moves to the
Lake Arrowhead Resort’s pool patio
for a brunch concert by the Yuko
Mabuchi Trio, which includes bassist
Del Atkins and drummer Bob
Breton. Tickets include snacks and
a drink coupon. Mabuchi’s trio has
performed at Segerstrom Center for
the Arts, opening for Branford Marsalis;
Blues Alley in Washington
DC as part of the National Cherry
Blossom Japanese Jazz series; and
at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
“Festival 2019: Takin’ it
Lakeside” is produced by
the non-profit Blue Jay
Jazz Foundation, whose
members are Wayne Austin,
Dr. Hugh Bialecki,
Chris Levister, Dr. Ernest
Levister, and Lori Semeniuk.
“This truly is a landmark
for our Jazz Festival
and the programs it helps
support,” said Board President
Chris Levister. “After many
years above the Rite-Aid in Blue
Jay and two years at SkyPark Santa’s
Village we not only have gorgeous
venues at the water’s edge, we
have a two-night, three-day schedule
that invites jazz fans who live off
the mountain to spend two or three
nights and enjoy the great accommodations
and amenities of this unique
Southern California destination.”
