Tuesday. In his opening remarks,<br />

Khondoker Ariful Islam, Sightsavers<br />

Country Director, mentioned that<br />

Bangladesh is losing 1.7% of its GDP due<br />

to the exclusion of people with disabilities<br />

from the labour market and the cost of<br />

exclusion, due to forgone income from a<br />

lack of schooling and employment both<br />

for people with disabilities and their<br />

caregivers, is estimated at US $1.2 billion<br />

annually. He also added that when they<br />

have access to skills training, they can<br />

significantly contribute to the rising<br />

demands of skilled labour, which<br />

provides considerable economic<br />

advantages for them, their families and<br />

the country, a press release said.<br />

Douglas Smith, Project Manager, said<br />

in his project brief that Inclusion Works is<br />

a Sightsavers led, UK aid-funded<br />

consortium of <strong>11</strong> partners to include<br />

people with disabilities in formal<br />

employment in Bangladesh, Kenya,<br />

partners, are<br />

working together<br />

programme.<br />

Operating over<br />

three years, the<br />

programme will<br />

create and test<br />

innovative<br />

approaches to<br />

improve the longterm<br />

economic<br />

inclusion of people<br />

with disabilities in<br />

the country. For<br />

this, the<br />

consortium will<br />

work directly with<br />

disabled people's<br />

organisations<br />

(DPOs), NGOs<br />

and prospective<br />

employers to<br />

demonstrate ways<br />

to include people<br />

with disabilities in the workplace on an<br />

equal basis with others. It will also<br />

demonstrate the UK government's<br />

commitment to inclusive development by<br />

ensuring that people with disabilities are<br />

central to international development<br />

policymaking and programmes.<br />

Nuruzzaman Ahmed, MP, Ministry of<br />

Social Welfare was present as Chief Guest<br />

of the launching. He acknowledged that,<br />

in the competitive labour market,<br />

entrance of young people with disabilities<br />

is a big challenge for the country and it<br />

becomes even more challenging when<br />

they lack adequate and appropriate skills,<br />

knowledge and information required for<br />

employment, especially in the formal<br />

sector. However, some initiatives by both<br />

the government and private sectors are<br />

contributing to lessen the number of<br />

barriers, particularly innovative<br />

programme like this one will help to<br />

create formal employment opportunities<br />

for youth with disabilities. The<br />

government is committed to attain the<br />

targets of SDGs and no one will leave<br />

behind. The Ministry of Social Welfare<br />

will extend all possible support to this<br />

programme and, where necessary, will<br />

play a catalytic role to coordinate with<br />

other Ministries.<br />

He, reasoned that due to unawareness,<br />

stigma, discrimination, insufficient<br />

budgetary allocation and inaccessibility,<br />

youths with disabilities are less likely to<br />

access education and skills development<br />

initiatives and the programme will<br />

address some of these issues.<br />

ministry office, said a<br />

industries minister laid<br />

emphasis on strengthening<br />

the existing bilateral<br />

relations further to reap<br />

mutual benefits through<br />

quality industrialisation.<br />

technology transfer and<br />

industrialization and the<br />

upcoming visit of Korean<br />

Prime Minister to<br />

Bangladesh were also<br />

discussed.<br />

and said his country's<br />

economy has stood at this<br />

position through hard<br />

labour, industrialisation and<br />

innovation although once<br />

the per capita income of<br />

Korea was lower than that of<br />

Jahangir passes<br />

away<br />

Jahangir, a noted media<br />

personality and executive<br />

director of Centre for<br />

Development<br />

Communication, died at a<br />

hospital in the city early<br />

Wednesday. He was 68,<br />

reports UNB.<br />

Jahangir, a journalist and<br />

younger brother of Noble<br />

laureate Dr Muhammad<br />

Yunus, breathed his last<br />

around 12:40 am at Asgar Ali<br />

Hospital in the city, said<br />

Tanbirul Islam, assistant<br />

general manager of Yunus<br />

Centre. He had been<br />

suffering from cancer. He<br />

was admitted to the hospital<br />

on Monday and kept on life<br />

support.<br />

He left behind his wife, one<br />

daughter, three sons and a<br />

host of relatives to mourn his<br />

death.<br />

The first namaz-e-janaza of<br />

Muhammad Jahangir was<br />

held around <strong>11</strong> am at Jatiya<br />

Press Club while his second<br />

one will be held at a mosque<br />

in Shantinagar.<br />

He will be buried at Mirpur<br />

Jahangir was the editor of<br />

monthly Binodan, a<br />

magazine for the adolescents<br />

being published since<br />

February 1998.<br />

He was also a teacher of<br />

Journalism Department at<br />

the University of Liberal Arts<br />

Bangladesh (ULAB). He also<br />

worked as a part time teacher<br />

at University of Development<br />

Alternative (UODA).<br />

He joined The Daily Dainik<br />

Bangla as university<br />

correspondent in 1970 and<br />

was promoted to staff<br />

reporter two years later. He<br />

later joined the Press<br />

Institute of Bangladesh<br />

(PIB).<br />

Jahangir was a former<br />

Dhaka Correspondent of<br />

Daily 'Aazkal' of Kolkata.<br />

Jahangir is also a member<br />

Bangla Academy, Asiatic<br />

Society of Bangladesh,<br />

National Press Club, and<br />

Rotary Club, among others.<br />

trial adjourned till July 14<br />

DHAKA : A Dhaka court yesterday adjourned<br />

the hearing of a case lodged over the murder<br />

of blogger Wasikur Rahman Babu till July 14,<br />

reports BSS<br />

Dhaka Third Additional Metropolitan<br />

Session Judge Robiul Alam deferred the<br />

hearing allowing a time plea of the state.<br />

Yesterday was fixed for cross-examining<br />

the last investigation officer Shah Moshiur<br />

Rahman, but he failed to turn up before the<br />

court because of health reason.<br />

Earlier, Rahman submitted his testimony<br />

on May 28. A total of 23 prosecution<br />

witnesses have been testified in the case.<br />

Wasikur was murdered on his way to office<br />

from his Tejgaon Begunbari house on March<br />
