‘COURTEOUS,

WHEN Gerald and Jan Horrocks moved into their
1930s bungalow in Dronfield, they inherited a 14-yearold
inefficient boiler that was complicated to use.
Three years on, dealing with it became frustrating,
and a testimonial from a satisfied client from gas and
plumbing specialists 1st Call Gas Services in Dronfield
Eye offered the solution.
As Gerald explains: “They were there on the first
page as I turned the cover and I thought ‘let’s give
these guys a ring’.”
1st Call Gas Services’ Leon Stones and his team are
known for their prompt response and a representative
“very quickly” visited the Horrocks’ home to carry out an assessment.
The Horrocks were advised that a new boiler was required and a
replacement suggested, along with a price and date for installation that
was within days.
The team went on to put in a new Ideal system boiler, handling some
complications with the electrics that meant the job took a day-and-a-half
rather than a day.
The Horrocks were impressed with the company’s ability to do the
additional work and with the final cost for that, which came in lower
than they had expected.
Overall, Gerald and Jan are delighted with their new boiler’s simpler
controls and the piping hot water it delivers.
Of 1st Call’s service, Gerald said: “The installers were courteous and
did a clean job.
“Particularly impressive was that we received a courtesy call after the
work had been done from Leon asking if everything had gone well and
we were happy. That was really good.”

AVE you noticed the Bowshaw Barrier recently?
A call by Dronfield Eye to have the traffic island construction
either cleaned or removed altogether has prompted action.
Covered in graffiti, the 100m-long grey barrier - put there to
restrict the views of motorists approaching the roundabout - was
dubbed by us as Dronfield’s biggest eyesore.
The town’s Civic Society agreed and also contacted Derbyshire
County Council with their views.
Now a section of the barrier has been taken away and the
remainder has had dozens of pieces of graffiti removed.

“ Simply
Perfect”
ITH a “perfect” new kitchen installed by experts at Sheffield Kitchen
Interiors, Steve and Tracey Eason had none of the usual deliberations
over accessories or paint colours.
The couple opted for white matte walls and clean-lined shutter blinds to allow the kitchen
“to speak for itself”.
Steve and Tracey, who live in a semi-detached property at Shiregreen, chose the
Meadowhead-based company as it had been recommended by a relative.
Tracey said the patient and helpful service the couple received right from the outset was
outstanding, enabling them to select exactly the right design and look for them.
In fact, owner Paul even arranged for the Easons to visit the home of another client,
before they made their final selection.
Tracey’s wish-list was for a future-proof kitchen with easy-access storage, and she
wanted lots of deep drawers to accommodate pots and pans and other kitchen equipment.
The team at Sheffield Kitchen Interiors created the new kitchen at the same time as
undertaking a transformation of two bedrooms.
Preparation work in the kitchen included provision of a skip for the removal of the old
kitchen, electrical work and plastering.
The part galley-style kitchen itself has sleek, handle-less flat slab doors, in a painted high
gloss finish, paired with Quartz worktops. The sink is a Range Master undermount bowl
and half sink with a Porrima spray tap.
There is a new Neff oven and hob with a convenient hide and slide door. The team also
installed a range of other integrated appliances.
Although, the Easons have more useful appliances in the room than in their previous
kitchen, the carefully considered lay-out means there has been no compromise on space
or storage.
Tracey said she is thrilled with what has been achieved.
She commented: “The kitchen is really beautiful. It’s perfect for us and I absolutely love it.
It’s so easy to keep clean and everything can go away so it stays tidy.

T’S been rather a busy month!
Firstly, thank you to everyone who said ‘hello’ at the wonderful
Dronfield Gala which I had the honour of officially opening. It was
encouraging to see so many Dronfield families enjoying themselves
in our wonderful Cliffe Park. The weather was ideal and the event
had something to appeal to everyone.
Earlier in the month, I had visited the big summer celebration -
the Strassenfest - in our German twin town of Sindelfingen.
My first time in Sindelfingen was a very enjoyable experience,
being warmly welcomed by our hosts and thoroughly enjoying the
festival.
Our own Dronfield Singers were there, performing on several of
the stages throughout the town, and they really were excellent.
There was a serious side to the visit too, joining delegates from
Sindelfingen’s other twin-towns across Europe for a debate. The
subject was “green belts” around our towns and cities, so I was
able to update everyone with the situation here in Dronfield.
Also in Sindelfingen, I attended a Sunday church service and met
lots of local people in an atmosphere of togetherness.
Visiting Germany, I had been concerned about how people may
feel about our Brexit issues, but the subject was hardly mentoned
at all. I exchanged gifts with Mayors of the other European towns -
and am now the proud owner of a splendid Swiss Army Knife!
Nearer to home, I was also given a warm welcome when I visited
Jill and Tony Bethell at their annual Garden Party at Ramshaw
Lodge where I particularly enjoyed performances by Dance
Dronfield.
Dronfield’s Annual Civic Service was another enjoyable occasion,
with the Parish Church Young Voices featuring children from nine
local schools.
Afterwards, I visited the Peel Centre to meet visitors from Nepal
who were here in Dronfield as guests of Dronfield Rotarians.
On another Rotary theme, I was delighted to help present this
year’s Junior Rotary Awards at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School.

Eye.
Finally, although I am delighted to be meeting so many people in
my role as Town Mayor, I have discovered it now takes me twice
as much time to do my shopping. Every time I visit a local
supermarket it seems everyone wants to stop and speak to me!

‘Installed to
perfection’
C
LIENTS embarking on choosing a new bathroom tend to fall into
two camps - those that know exactly what they want and those
who need a little guidance.
H2O’s latest customers, a couple from Gosforth Valley, fell into the
latter group.
While they knew they wanted to future-proof their bathroom with a
luxury walk-in shower rather than a bath, they hadn’t made any
decisions about the design and style.
Having called in at H2O’s showroom, following a recommendation by
another tradesman, the couple spoke to Richard who had plenty of ideas.
They decided to let the expert take the lead and couldn’t be more
pleased with the result.
The client said: “We weren’t quite sure what we wanted but Richard
made it easy for us and we went with the original detail. There are
features I wouldn’t have thought of, like panelling the ceiling and the
modern towel rail with a bit of sparkle.
“Richard also changed the lay-out by switching the position of the toilet
and wash basin and it’s just so much easier now.”
The team at H2O handled all aspects of the job in the 1970s-built
property, including the plumbing, electrics and flooring, but firstly having
to correct some historical, and sub-standard, workmanship.
Other features include a touch-operated LED mirror, that never mists
up, along with a handy recess in the shower for all those bathroom
essentials that tend to clutter shelving! The floating wash basin and
cabinet makes for easy cleaning.
H2O’s long list of satisfied clients always have praise for the quality of
products and the finish. It was no different with this latest job.
“The installation was done to perfection, we had no complaints at all.
We feel H2O are very pleasant people, are easy to deal with and overall
did a really good job,” the client added.

Proud of their achievements... Dronfield St John Ambulance Cadets with their officers
Awards galore for St John Cadets
T
HE thriving Dronfield St John Ambulance Cadet Division
hosted a presentation night at their headquarters when
family and friends turned out to see the cadets presented with
their awards.
Five new cadets were enrolled into the order of St John by Stuart
Slater, District Project Lead and Area Manager for North East and
North West Derbyshire St John Ambulance.
First Aid certificates were presented to ten cadets who had
completed their Level 1 and Connor Pinder-Hodgson received his
Cadet 200 hour Service Award to recognise his time spent on
voluntary duty.
The Grand Prior is the highest award which can be attained by a
St John Cadet. Individual Grand Prior subject certificates were
presented and several cadets received both their Bronze and Silver
Awards towards their Grand Prior Badge.
OCAL volunteers provide more than £400,000 of support
for charity Ashgate Hospicecare each year.
The hospice has acknowledged the contribution made by its 690
active volunteers who, at any one time, support its retail shops,
fund-raising and clinical staff.
Based on volunteers giving an average of six hours a month,
and calculated at the National Minimum Wage of £8.21 per
hour, their contribution has resulted in over £400,000 of
support.
In reality, many volunteers give much more of their time and
would cost more per hour to hire due to their skills and
experience.
Joanne Neill, volunteer development manager, said: “Ever
since we opened over 30 years ago, volunteers have been
integral to our operation. We simply couldn’t run the hospice
without them.

Two cadets received their Silver Awards and their Gold Awards
from Stuart Slater and Sam Parker, District Youth Lead for St John
Ambulance Derbyshire.
Six cadets achieved their Grand Prior Awards and these were
presented by Sam Parker to Yelena Hobson, Jodie Smith,
Emily Asquith, Connor Pinder-Hodgson, Hannah Jones and Hannah
White.
Cadets present on the night were Alex Walker, James Alexandra,
Olivia Webb-Howarth, Holly Putland, Amber Radford, Benjamin
Ripley, Joseph Summerfield, Samuel Lee, Emily Asquith, Hannah
Bricklebank, Nathan Jones, Prudence Gbadamosi, Lola Hill, Hannah
White, Connor Pinder-Hodgson, Hannah Jones, Jodie Smith and
Yelena Hobson.
Others present included Dronfield Cadet Leaders Richard Wood,
Mark Handley, Rebbeca Handley and Youth Helper Karen Putland.
How local hospice volunteers are making such a difference

staff on the ward and in the day hospice, helping out in the retail
shops, doing administration, bucket collecting, marshalling at
events and in many other roles too.
“We know that volunteers who dedicate their time to the hospice
don’t do it for the praise.

and families to receive care, not least because of these enormous
savings.
“Our volunteers are truly special people and part of the Ashgate

Fanshawe School, headteacher Teresa Roche
was presented with a national industry accolade
W
HAT does Dronfield’s retiring headteacher Teresa Roche have in
common with David Cameron, Tony Blair, Jenny Agutter, Sheila
Hancock, Brendan Cole and Nadiya Hussain?
They have all been recipients of an accolade presented by The Pearson National
Teaching Awards.
Selected from thousands of nominations, Teresa is one of just 68 Silver Award
winners across the country and her huge contribution to education was celebrated
on ‘Thank A Teacher Day’, as the Pearson Awards marked its 21st year of
recognising excellence in education. Her recognition was for ‘Lifetime Achievement’.
Teresa, who is retiring as head of Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School this summer,
has made an immense contribution to education for around 40 years, making a
difference to many schools, teaching professionals and families, but most
importantly to the lives of generations of children and young adults in her care.
Her Lifetime Achievement Award nomination was supported by more than 90
people: students, staff past and present, parents, governors and colleagues from
other educational establishments. It was presented at a surprise celebration in the
school’s main hall.
The awards scheme is an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in
1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher
can have on the lives of the young people they teach.
Teresa has also been shortlisted to win one of just 13 Gold Awards at the UK’s
‘Oscars for Teachers’. She will join fellow Silver Award winners, along with three
Scottish Education Award winners and three winners of the Professional Teaching
Awards Cymru, at a glittering Pearson Teaching Awards event on 20th October. It is
to be broadcast on BBC2 the following week as ‘Britain’s Classroom Heroes’ as a
showcase of excellence in education.

Contrary to recent media coverage,
wood burning stoves are here to stay!
“Let’s dispel the myth right now,” says David Payne of the
Fireplace Factory. “Wood burning stoves are not bad for
the environment. In fact, if done correctly, wood burning
can actually be a carbon neutral process.”
Restrictions in Smoke Control Areas like Dronfield, mean
that only authorised ‘smokeless’ fuels can be burnt and all
stoves must be DEFRA approved. Extra testing measures
due to come into force in 2022 will mean that all stoves will
have to be super clean and pass emissions tests.
It is widely believed that the carbon released from
burning the wood will be balanced out by the carbon
absorbed by the tree in its lifetime. Wood burning could
well be the fuel of the future!

Brave Sam is fighting back
A young footballer left unable to walk by cancer is
back on his feet as family and friends raise funds
for charities supporting him. Deborah Wain reports
S
AM Hunt, aged nine, was thought to have fracture his
collar bone after complaining of pain in his arm and
shoulder.
But blood tests later revealed that Sam was suffering from acute
lymphoblastic leukaemia, a type of cancer that affects the white
blood cells. The rapidly-progressing cancer had spread to the
bones in Sam’s shoulder and hip.
The schoolboy has already undergone 18 months of gruelling
treatment. In the early months he was unable to walk and needed
to use a wheelchair. The cancer is now in remission although Sam
faces further treatment until April 2021.
Sam is back at Stonelow Junior School for morning classes and
also is able to join in some training with his team at AFC Dronfield.
His family, parents Liz and Steve, and brother and sister James,
18, and Kate, 15, together with family, friends and other
supporters, have been busy raising money for Ward 6 at Sheffield
Children’s Hospital, where Sam is a patient.
Liz said: “You never expect anyone to say to you that your child
has cancer.
“Sam was always active and went from playing football to being
so ill through the leukaemia and chemotherapy that was unable to
walk for three or four months, and then needed a wheelchair for
another six.
“Although he still struggles, he is walking again now. He copes
amazingly well with it all. He lives in the moment.”
It was in January, 2018, that Sam suddenly began complaining of

pain in his shoulder and arm. It was thought he had suffered a
fractured collar bone but then he developed hip pain.
Blood tests at Sheffield Children’s Hospital revealed the
devastating diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia – a very
rare condition but the most common kind of childhood leukaemia.
For the first six months or so, Sam underwent intense
chemotherapy delivered at hospital and by outreach nurses at
home.
Now he is in a maintenance phase, including daily chemotherapy,
which Liz administers, and antibiotics, and then monthly
chemotherapy in hospital through a port implanted under his skin.
Every three months, Sam must also have a lumber puncture,
when a needle is inserted into the fluid around the lower part of the
spinal cord.
Liz said: “What he has to go through is awful but the prognosis is
very good. Sam is in remission, but you always worry it is going to
come back.”
Liz set up a Facebook page to provide updates on Sam’s condition
– mostly because she has a large family back in her native country
of Holland. As well as the “outstanding care” from hospital staff,
the family has had lots of other support, including from the Parents

Tributes paid
to wartime
hero Jim
D
RONFIELD war hero Jim Manning – a veteran of Dunkirk
and D-Day – has died, aged 96.
Jim was told to lie about his age to sign up for the Army at the
age of 16 in 1938. He initially served with the Hallamshire
Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment and saw action with
the British Expeditionary Force, at Dunkirk, in 1940, when he was
wrongly reported as killed.
He later volunteered for
the Maritime Regiment
and was a gunner on
board a tanker ship that
was part of the naval
bombardment fleet prior
to troops landing on the
beaches of Normandy on
6th June, 1944.
Jim later served in the
invasion of North Africa
and in Burma. He was also
involved in the campaign
in the Atlantic.
Jim was highly decorated
for his service and most
recently was awarded
France’s highest honour -
the Legion D’honneur - for
the role he played in
France’s liberation from the
Nazis.
Jim Manning of Dronfield was a
veteran of Dunkirk and D-Day
Jim married his first wife Betty not long after the war ended but
was widowed in 1984. In 1989, he married second wife, Kath, and
the couple enjoyed 30 happy years together.
Jim also leaves a step-son Stephen and his wife Helen, plus
three step-grandchildren, Rebecca, Joe and Sam.
Mourners gathered for his funeral service at Dronfield’s St John
the Baptist Parish Church.
Standard bearers representing the Normandy Veterans, the York
and Lancaster Regiment, and the Royal British Legion, formed a
guard of honour as Jim’s coffin was carried in to church draped in
the Union Jack and topped with red roses. The famous middle
stanza of the remembrance poem 'For the Fallen', by Laurence
Binyon, was read out and ‘The Last Post’ sounded.
Rev Peter Bold, who led the service, paid tribute to Jim and other
former Second World War servicemen.
“We owe Jim and so many others of his generation so much.
They brought us our freedom. Europe would have been such a
different place without them,” he said.
After the war, Jim became a builder, involved in constructing
new homes for those displaced by Ladybower Reservoir. He went
on to do a highly specialised job of lining furnaces in the Sheffield
steelworks, working hard into his 70s.
Jim was a keen golfer and allotment holder, and, like Kath, a
talented artist. He was remembered as being patient, loyal, and
keen to help others, with a good sense of humour.
In 2016, Dronfield Eye arranged for Jim and the late Ernest
Ellerton, known as Ted, a fellow proud recipient of the award, to
be presented with their medals by Jean-Claude Lafontaine, the
East Midlands based Honorary Consul of France. The ceremony
was one of the first events to take place at the newly-restored
Dronfield Hall Barn.

HIS group of Dronfield children in their
best clothes are enjoying a big tea party,
but what’s the occasion?
Dronfield Eye reader Molly Allen would love to
know if anyone can shed any light on the celebration
and venue. Perhaps it was the Queen’s Coronation in
1953?
Molly explained that the photograph came to light
when she was clearing out her late aunt Bessie
Edwards’ home, in Alexandra Road.
Bessie’s only child, Margaret, born in 1944,
is pictured at the head of the left-hand table,
closest to the camera.
Born only months apart, cousins Molly and
Margaret were inseparable as girls, but Molly isn’t
on this photograph.
She thinks it might have been taken at the
Congregational Chapel, or the Parish Church
Sunday School room.
Margaret went on to become Margaret Guyler and
eventually settled in Nottingham where she sadly
died in 1985, aged just 39, leaving three children.

I
Making the cut... Lee Rowley MP visits one
of the charity stalls at Dronfield Gala
T has been a relatively quiet few weeks in
Westminster as the leadership contest concludes.
Despite big questions continuing to loom around
Brexit and the direction of the country, we are now
waiting for the new Prime Minister to take office in
order to move things forward.
As I write, we are down to the final two candidates
and the voting begins in a few days’ time before a
decision at the end of July.
Obviously, the leadership campaign is a party political
one but hopefully, through the debates that are now
happening, there has been the ability to see what both
Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt are thinking about
next steps on Brexit and the (hugely important) other
policies like schools, hospitals and roads which haven’t
had enough focus in recent months.
I’ve met both candidates in the last few weeks to
highlight the important issues to NE Derbyshire –
fracking, planning, economic development amongst
others – and both were willing to listen and spend
time talking through the challenges we face.
On a personal level, I am supporting Boris Johnson
(check out my website for the full reasons:
www.leerowleymp.wordpress.com) as I think he
gives us the best chance of getting on with Brexit,
which we badly need to do, and then getting back to
talking about all the other issues which you tell me
about on a day-to-day basis. We look forward to
working with the new PM to make NE Derbyshire even
better.
Locally, it has been something of a transport-themed
few weeks, starting off by attending the AGM of the
Friends of Dronfield Station. FODS do a fantastic job
supporting the growth and improvement of the station
and their customary professionalism, commitment
and enthusiasm was on display again, as ever!
A few days later, in Westminster, I also met with
Abellio, the new franchise holder for the Midland
Mainline who will be taking over (amongst others) the
London service from early August. There are lots of
plans over the coming years to replace the trains,
improve the timetables and develop the stations and
I’m hopeful our local services will improve further.
Finally, it was great to see so many people at the
Dronfield Gala a few days ago. The number of stalls
and the crowds get bigger every year – thanks to
everyone who helped organise, took part or supported!

T
HERE’S no wonder these young gymnasts look pleased with themselves.
Competing at the Arena Birmingham, these local superstars from Sheffield
Trampoline Academy - including their coach Joanne Janes from Dronfield -
generated points towards their Yorkshire team total and secured themselves a
place at the National Individual Finals at Coventry.
Said Joanne: “It was a long weekend of intense competition but the hard work
and training definitely paid off. They worked incredibly hard and I’m so proud to
have them all finish in the top eight in their category in Great Britain! “

good causes in S18.
The article in your July magazine was excellent about the iron lung and
showcased the work Rotary has done to clear the world of polio. At its height,
polio was killing 200,000-plus children per year and leaving millions with a form
of disability. Last year, there were 32 cases in total in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The good thing about Rotary collecting for Polio eradication is Bill Gates gives
£2 for every £1 collected.
So on behalf of Dronfield Rotary (and lots of other groups) ‘thank you’ and keep
up the good work of producing the excellent Dronfield Eye

Summer’s here and if you’re looking for
a challenging leg-stretch, the Dronfield
Barn Rotary Walk is right on your doorstep
W
ORK is almost complete on a major repair project
for the Dronfield Barn Rotary Walk - the 14-mile
route-marked circular footslog around S18.
The walk was initially set up in 2000 by the Rotary Club
of Dronfield at a cost of more than £62,000 to celebrate
the new Millennium... and it was temporarily suspended
just a year later due to the national outbreak of Foot and
Mouth Disease.
Nowadays called Dronfield Barn Rotary Walk, it is
enjoyed every week by walking groups, families and
individuals. The route has been extensively restored and
there are now 97 stiles, three bridges, a walkway and 280
route markers.
Volunteers from Walks at the Barn regularly walk the
footpaths, noting their condition, if stiles need overhauling,
any damage and if way-makers need repair.
They also undertake on behalf of the Dronfield Hall Barn
to cut back foliage while walking, or report needed repairs
by the route’s volunteer wardens.
Volunteers are always required. If you enjoy walking and
being in the fresh air, and also have time on your hands
and want to be with like-minded people, why not consider
being part of the happy band of volunteers at the Barn.
Said Rtn David Lumb, one of the pioneers of the Round
Walk: “It's a great local out-and-about facility. We meet
people using it just about every day, especially in summer.”
Local walks have been promoted through Dronfield Hall
Barn since 2016, when organised and guided local family
walks were initiated. These were introduced in order to
encourage family activities and health benefits from
walking, and also to develop the public’s knowledge of
Dronfield.
Organised historical and nature walks have also been
established, especially in connection to various
presentations, projects and displays.
In 2016, the Barn accepted the maintenance and financial support
of the Dronfield 2000 Rotary Walk, subsequently named the
Dronfield Barn Rotary Walk. It was agreed that the word Rotary

would be maintained in recognition of the hard work by and huge
expense to The Rotary Club of Dronfield.
Funding for the maintenance of the Barn Rotary Walk is raised by
donations, sale of leaflets and booklets.
A new booklet of the walk provides maps, divided into
seven sections of varying difficulty, so that if the full
walk is too much, people can complete it in parts,
rather than in one go. Included in the booklet are
photos of the views walkers can expect and diagrams
of the flora of the area. Also, gradients are incorporated
for those who are not confident about tackling steeper
hills.
To support the costs of the walk, the Walk Guide is on
sale at the Barn Bookshop, or Steel's Ironmongers,
Dronfield Bottom, at £3.
To mark the launch of the publication, a relaunch of
the route for the Dronfield Barn Rotary Walk took place
starting out from Coal Aston Village Hall.
There are ten recognised walk wardens who each look
after a section of the route and complete or report
repairs. Anyone who'd like to do this job contact

Cricket, cakes
and karate!
Fun in the sun raised a hefty amount towards
much-needed new nets for a local cricket club
H
OLMESFIELD Cricket Club held a fun day to raise funds for new cricket
nets in memory of James Bedingfield.
James was instrumental in setting up a local children’s cricket club a few
years ago which has grown from strength to strength. It now provides the
opportunity for more than 80 children to play cricket each week during the
summer.
The club expanded greatly with James’ considerable input and is now in the
process of raising funds for a new set of practice nets to allow them to provide
an even better experience for the children.
The Fun Day began with an U11 match followed by a T20 adult match, as well
as a karate display, a raffle and auction, as well as a bucking bronco and
bouncy castle! A substantial amount of money was raised for the nets.
More than 300 people attended and an amazing day was had by all. Organisers
have asked Dronfield Eye to pass on a big thank you to all who were involved in
organising the day and those who donated prizes, cake and their time.

HE summer holidays are a prime time to move home if you
have kids and want to settle them in before the new school
year begins.
When completion day arrives, the people you are buying from
must remove all of their contents from the property. As soon as
their solicitor receives your money, you are entitled to move in.
However, there may be a delay if they are still vacating.
In most transactions, the sellers are expected to move out on
the morning of completion, allowing buyers the afternoon to
move in. Solicitors generally aim for the handover to happen
around 2pm, but I would recommend liaising directly with the
other party before booking a removal van.
Don’t arrive too early, as it will only cause frustration and
additional pressure.
There are a few practical points you can put in place for
completion day, but please wait until you have exchanged
contracts:
1 - Notify the local authority and utility companies of your moving
date, so they can apportion the council tax and bills accordingly.
2 - Contact your telephone provider to request any landline is
disconnected.
3 - Removal firms will normally take a provisional reservation,
but they like confirmation as early as possible. You may have to
pay a cancellation charge if you book before exchange and your
completion date changes.
4 - Arrange buildings insurance for your new property and cancel
any existing policies.
5 - Cancel direct debits relating to the house you are leaving, but
wait until the completion date to put them into effect.
A successful moving day is very dependent on the financial
institutions. Purchase money is sent by bank transfer, which can
take anything from 20 minutes to four hours on very busy days.
In the summer holidays, Fridays tend to be particularly hectic,
especially the one before the August Bank Holiday, so you would
do well to avoid this date if a quick completion is important.

decorating done,” Lynn said.

ROM hugely talented solo artists to a storming 20-piece
party band, the 2019 DronFest is shaping up to be perhaps
the best one yet.
For ten-and-a-half hours on Saturday, August 10th, there will
be live music from two stages in Cliffe Park and the line-up
really does promise top rate
entertainment for everyone,
whatever their taste.
The ‘Main Stage’ will see blues
rock outfit Blast Lane kick-off the
action at 12.30pm, followed by
Sheffield band The Tin Soldiers,
singer/songwriter Liam Walker, the
powerful vocals of Mollyanna,
DronFest stalwarts Firecracker,
Stereosonics, American performer
Arielle, fun band Clear Vinyl and
top-of-the-bill folk-punk outfit
Ferocious Dog.
Ferocious Dog Performers entertaining on the
‘Other Stage’ will be Contrabanned, Dronny Bottom Buskers,
Rogue, The Buddies, The Natterjacks, Mark Mathews and The
Cabronitas.
There will be plenty of other
entertainment too, with quality
food and drink stalls open
throughout the day.

Youngsters encouraged to volunteer
T
HE Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner is teaming up with a national
campaign to support local youth.
In partnership with the #iwill campaign, Hardyal Dhindsa has offered match funding
to ensure Derbyshire young people get a slice of the action.
A grant programme has been launched across the county to encourage young
people to take action and volunteer in their community.
The #iwill campaign aims to get six out of ten young people involved in social action
by 2020.
Hardyal said: "We are very pleased to be able to secure additional funds to help our
young people make a positive social impact. These grants aim to increase youth
volunteering, develop skills and confidence and increase community safety.
“We wanted to fund enjoyable projects that demonstrate a positive impact on the
wider community as well as improving social cohesion and crime prevention."
The Big Lottery Fund and Department of Culture, Media & Sport are each investing
£20 million seed funding over four years to create the #iwill fund. Nottinghamshire
Community Foundation is acting as administrator and is awarding grants on behalf of
the #iwill fund across both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Mechanical ‘lung’ visits Dronfield

HE Barnado’s shop in Dronfield Civic
Centre is staging a Summer Fair on
Saturday, 27th July, in the Civic Hall, from
9am-3pm.
A number of Barnardo’s stores from the
Sheffield area are taking part in the event,
the first of its kind in Dronfield.
Each shop will have a stall with a variety
of items on sale ranging from designer
wear and accessories, new children's
clothing, accessories and toys, household
goods, soft furnishings and vintage
items.
There will be performances too, plus
one of the Dronfield shop’s busy jumble
sales running alongside it in the nearby
Peel Centre where every item will be only
£1.

N eye-catching campaign to eradicate polio saw a replica
iron lung parked up outside Sainsbury’s.
The Rotary Club of Dronfield was displaying the mock version of
the mechanical respirator which helped mostly children, whose
lungs were paralysed by an outbreak of polio in the UK in the
1950s.
Rotary has been working to wipe out polio for more than 30 years,
and has helped to reduce cases by more than 99.9 per cent.
The organisation is determined to end the disease in the last two
countries where it remains endemic – Afghanistan and Pakistan, -
and to keep other countries polio-free through immunisation and
surveillance efforts.

The replica was built by Roger Frank, of the Rotary Club of Upper
Eden in Cumberland, to educate younger generations.
Indeed older shoppers recalled family members being affected by
polio and knew exactly what an iron lung was, but younger people
were initially puzzled by it.
Dronfield Henry Fanshawe student Lewis Hall, aged 17, had a
sense of what being inside an iron lung might have felt like for
young patients when he climbed into the contraption.
He said: “I had no idea what an iron lung or polio was before. It
wasn’t as small as I thought it was going to be but I can’t imagine
having to lie in there for a long period of time.”
Rotarians also took the replica to Coal Aston Gala.

annual Gala
THIS summer’s Dronfield Gala was one of the
biggest and busiest most folk can remember.
With more rides, more stalls and more
entertainment, the Town Council-organised
spectacular in beautiful Cliffe Park was also blessed
with perfect weather conditions.
Highlights included performances by Dance
Dronfield, the award-winning Dronfield Genquip
Band, and displays of a snake, tarantula and other
unusual creatures by the Oreo and Friends group.
Also on offer was plenty of great food, drink and
cooling ice-creams.
The event was officially opened by Mayor of
Dronfield, Coun Lilian Deighton, and NE Derbyshire
MP Lee Rowley also showed his support.

UMMER seems to have taken a long time to arrive
this year, but hopefully we’re set for a few weeks of

Pub’s Bank Holiday
charity fund-raiser

RONFIELD’S Green Dragon Inn’s annual Bank Holiday
Party in the Car Park event take place on 25th August –
and this year will raise funds for charity.
Landlady Veronica Tomlinson has laid on plenty of music and
entertainment for the popular free-entry event, from 2pm until
midnight. The day will raise money for the Parents Association of
Children with Tumours and Leukaemia.
PACT owns and runs a house in Sheffield right next to the
Children’s Hospital and buys equipment, along with providing trips
and treats for the children and their families.
Sam Hunt, aged nine, from Dronfield, who is being treated for
leukaemia has benefitted from the charity’s support.
Sam’s elder brother, James, works as a glass collector at the pub
and Veronica knows the family well.
She said: “I thought it would be great to make it a charity day this
year, with money going directly to where it’s needed.”
From 4pm, Ritchie Ellwood will be entertaining the crowd
followed by live music into the night.
There will be festival face and body art from Glitter Pod, and a
sale of Bodyshop products, while customers can sample some
special gins offers from Sweet Little Gin. A percentage of sales
will go to the charity.
Bacon butties will be served during the day.
Raffle tickets will be on sale with several great prizes including
a week’s accommodation in a two-bed apartment, near
Marbella.

One of Australia’s biggest beekeepers, Mick Leahy, paid a recent visit to Troway Hall.
Mick (pictured below left with Gloria Havenhand) transports hives on low loaders - to
the redgums and eucalyptus trees and takes more than 1,600 hives!
During his visit, Mick spoke of a scandal involving ‘fake’ Manuka honey being
produced by Evergreen Life Ltd. Based in Auckland, New Zealand the company was
recently prosecuted by New Zealand Food Safety for adding chemicals to their globally
sold honey to make it antibacterial.
“Is this the tip of the iceberg?” Mick asked, adding: “There seems to be more Manuka
honey than the Manuka bush could ever produce.
“Do your councils test Manuka honey in the UK?” he enquired.

EYE
OFTEN get into trouble for stealing food I’m not supposed
to eat. Although I have short legs, I do have a long body
which means I can sometimes reach things on the table or
work surface in the kitchen.
Dog food specialists from PurePetFood.co.uk have revealed the
snacks and ingredients that could prove dangerous if eaten by a dog,
explaining why each should be kept out of our reach.
Some human food could cause health problems in dogs which can
range from toilet issues and vomiting to heart disease, liver failure
and even death. Many owners know not to give their pet dog
chocolate, but other foods to avoid include tea, garlic and grapes.
To help dog lovers avoid causing harm to pups and canines, here
are some they shouldn’t be allowed to eat and why:
1. Chocolate: This is the number one human food dogs shouldn’t
consume. It’s because chocolate contains methylxanthines and
theobromine which could mess up a canine’s insides by causing
vomiting, diarrhoea and excessive urination, panting and thirst, an
abnormal heartbeat, seizures or even death.
2. Alcohol: This can have a similar effect to chocolate and also cause
abnormal blood acidity, central nervous system depression, decreased
co-ordination or even coma in dogs. Pets should never be allowed to
consume any products containing toxic alcohol and a vet needs to be
contacted urgently if you think they may have ingested some.
3. Grapes and Raisins: Scientists have been unable to identify the
toxic substance contained in grapes and raisins, but it’s known they
could cause kidney failure and shouldn’t be fed to dogs.
4. Cheese: High fat, high calorie food can be bad for pets if eaten
excessively by causing weight gain, which can lead to lots of other
health problems. Most are also very salty, meaning eating too much
could eventually bring on heart disease or stroke in your dog.
5. Onion: Chemicals in onions can cause dogs’ red blood cells to
rupture or reduce how effectively they can carry oxygen around their
body, whether the vegetable is cooked or raw.
6. Ready Meals: Excessive salt can harm dogs just like humans. It
could cause increased thirst and raise blood pressure, so it’s best not
to let them lick your plate after you’ve had a ready meal or other high
salt foods like crisps and processed snacks.
7. Nuts: Almonds, cashews, pecans, pistachios and other nuts are
packed full of fats and oils that could lead to diarrhoea, vomiting and
pancreatitis in dogs. Macadamias, meanwhile, can cause a range of
other problems in pets too, including weakness, tremors, depression
and even hyperthermia.
8. Xylitol: Used as a sweetener in a range of products including
chewing gum, toothpaste and baked desserts, xylitol can cause
insulin release in dogs and potentially lead to liver failure.
9. Tea and Coffee: A tiny sip or two is unlikely to do major damage
but drinking much of a morning cuppa could be life-threatening for
dogs so it’s best to keep your pet away from hot beverages. Caffeine
could be very harmful to your dog as it’s a methylxanthine, like the
chemicals found in chocolate.
10. Garlic: Like onions, garlic contains chemicals that can damage
red blood cells and negatively affect dogs’ overall health, raw or
cooked.
11. Olive Oil: Like most oils, olive oil is high in both fat and calories

Dronfield firm’s 100th year
The year 2019 is a big one for one of the
town’s oldest and best-known companies
A
LFRED Dunham & Son Ltd has always taken pride in being
a forward-looking company, but this year it can be excused
for reflecting on its proud past.
For 2019 is the centenary year of the Dronfield business which
can be traced back to Alfred Dunham returning from active service
in World War I in the Royal Flying Corps.
Aged 34, a keen chrysanthemum grower and a joiner by trade,
Alfred took over the town’s existing firm of funeral

Appeal to help boy
with rare illness
A local couple are aiming to raise awareness of
the rare disorder of the nervous system affecting
their 11-year-old son. Deborah Wain reports
T
HOMAS Gascoyne was a typical toddler but began to
significantly regress as he got older. He is now unable to
talk or sit unaided and suffers seizures and a movement
disorder.
Despite many tests, there has been no concrete diagnosis of
Thomas’ illness but parents Claire and Mark have been told by his
consultant that it is almost certainly a rare variant of Batten Disease,
which itself is extremely unusual.
They are currently awaiting the results of further genetic tests to
see if they confirm this. This could take many months.
The couple, who also have an eight-year-old son, Alexander, are
currently adapting their Coal Aston home so Thomas can be better
included in family life.
Claire said Thomas has a normal infancy but struggled with his
speech and language, displaying a few autistic traits.
However, at nursery he loved counting and space and, aged four, he
could count to 30, knew all the planets and could recognise musical
instruments by sight and sound.
When Thomas was six, an occupational therapist noticed something
was amiss with his core strength and spatial awareness.
Claire said: “From then he slowly started to regress. His walking
got slower, he couldn’t manage stairs or steps, he felt unsteady so
started to crawl and eventually stopped walking then stopped
crawling.”
Thomas suffered his first seizure in 2015 and has gone on to
develop several different kinds of seizures, including myoclonic
seizures, triggered by movement.
Claire said: “Thomas’ seizures are now under control which is a
huge improvement from last year when he could have up to 60
seizures a day. At the moment
he is struggling with a
movement disorder which
affects most of his body with
involuntary movements while
awake. The worst areas
affected are his head and arms
that are moving constantly
while he is awake and this is not
under control at the moment.”
Thomas is a patient at both
Sheffield Children’s Hospital and
Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
Tests had earlier ruled out a
Thomas when he was
a lively toddler
number of conditions, including Batten Disease, which has 13
identified types. Sadly, Batten Disease is progressive and life-limiting
and Thomas’s condition has deteriorated over the last year.
The family would like to make more people aware of the disease.
They are in the middle of adapting their home with the aid of a
disabled facilities grant to allow Thomas access to the ground floor
and garden and hope to raise the shortfall of £20,000 or find people
willing to donate materials or labour.
Claire said: “We are adding a ground floor bedroom and disabled
wet room through the grant from the council but it doesn’t cover
all the ground floor adaptions to include Thomas in everyday
family life.”
Meanwhile, the Gascoynes are supported by a team of professionals
to help them manage Thomas’ care, including physio and
occupational therapists, and community nurses.
They also benefit from Chesterfield charity Fairplay and have family
respite breaks provided by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
Claire added: “We are putting together a care package which will
provide extra daytime support for Thomas.”

ceremony in the Phoenix Hall at Henry
Fanshawe School.
The Rotary Club of Dronfield recognition is for
Y6 students only and features a diary which
consists of four areas: Community Service,
Physical Recreation, Social Experience and
Personal Skills.
Each area is an activity which helps the
student learn more about themselves, about
other people and about the community in
which they live.
The Diary is done at the students’ own pace
during the Year 6 school year and is about
gathering evidence, then writing and
illustrating about their experiences. Once
completed, the Diary is handed in, read and
matched to the Rotary criteria taking into
consideration individual children’s skills.
At the Award Ceremony, the Mayor of
Dronfield, Coun Lilian Deighton, and her
Consort Keith Deighton, presented each of the
60 students with an RJCA certificate and
medal. As a thank you to the school and
teachers, each Dronfield primary school
received an RJCA School Certificate.
Rob Barron brought the evening to a close
with a vote of thanks to the Mayor and her
Consort for presenting the Awards and also to
everyone for attending.

More trains on way for Dronfield
Dronfield rail commuters can look forward to an
improved service timetable and modern trains
A
WELL attended annual meeting of the Friends of Dronfield
Station saw members treated to three fascinating talks
about developments in train services.
Pete Myers, stakeholder manager for Northern Trains, the franchise
which covers the whole of the north from Hull to Liverpool and up to
the border with Scotland, kicked off by explaining that until recently
the north of England had suffered from a lack of investment in
railways, but that was about to change dramatically.
He said that Northern’s objectives were to drive economic growth,
improve connectivity between cities and towns, make commuting to
work easier and quicker, and to make the north a better place to live.
Pete promised 101 new Spanish-built trains and the refurbishment
to a high standard of efficiency and comfort of 243 existing trains,
plus an improvement programme of Northern’s 477 stations with
CCTV, better lighting, customer information and more ticket
machines.
He added that the company was getting ‘smart’ by adapting itself to
the increasing demand by people who wished to purchase tickets via
their mobile phones and other devices. Pete concluded his talk by
explaining that from May 2020, Dronfield can expect trains to
Sheffield and Chesterfield every half-hour, a 100% improvement on
the existing service.
The next speaker was Edward Funnel, stakeholder manager for
Abellio, the company which has been awarded the contract for the
railway serving the East Midlands. The new franchise will start in
August and will be known as East Midlands Railways.
He explained that Abellio is an international company which runs a
number of rail and bus companies. East Midlands covered a
widespread area which includes the main Intercity line between
Sheffield and London as well as regional rail services in the South
and in East Anglia.
Edward went on to say that the company was embarking on a huge
investment in rolling stock, timetabling, catering and station
improvement over the next eight years, including a complete
replacement of its fleet of trains.
The train service to London will benefit from the introduction of bimode
trains which will run on electricity up to Market Harborough
and diesel from there to Sheffield. This should reduce journey times.
He concluded his talk by saying that EMR were confident enough in
the future reliability of its train services to promise that the delay
time required for compensation would be reduced from 30 to 15
minutes.
The final speaker was Melissa Farmer, rail development manager
for the Sheffield City Region. She explained that her job was to work
closely with the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and
the various rail companies and local authorities to encourage the
greater use of the railways.
She reported that her team’s activities were closely integrated with
the SCR Integrated Rail Plan led by the Mayor, Dan Jarvis.
She felt that the role of community groups such as FoDS was
important to the future of rail services and was particularly keen to
encourage the involvement of young people. To conclude, she listed
a number of recent activities. These included the new canopy at Dore
and Totley Station, a clean up at Darnall involving young people, and
further projects at Swinton and at Penistone.
FoDS chairman, Dr Peter Hayward, thanked the speakers for three
stimulating and engaging talks. He said that since regular rail
services from Dronfield were introduced in 2008 the town has seen a
steady increase in the facilities at Dronfield Station and in the
number of trains stopping there. He added that the speakers gave
him increased confidence that the number of people using the station
(currently 250,000 per year) would increase even further when the
plans outlined were introduced.

Flying heritage celebrated
A new project will rediscover the lost heritage
of military landscapes in the Coal Aston area
and their influence on surrounding development
over the last century. Deborah Wain reports
O
RGANISED by the Landscape Heritage Research Foundation –
‘From RFC Airfield to City Suburb – 100 Years of History at
Meadowhead & Norton, Sheffield’ is funded by the National Lottery
Heritage Fund.
It follows on from the group’s successful ‘Norton’s Flying Legacy’
project that took place in 2016 to 2017.
The project develops some of the themes begun in the first project
and also extends the timeline to
cover the period from the outbreak
of World War II into the 21st
century. It will run over the next
15 months and will delve further
into the history of the suburb
from the formation of the WWI
Aeroplane Repair Depot, proposed
development of civil aviation and
then explore how the former
airfield site affected the area’s
development into a thriving suburb
of Sheffield.

speakers and field visits across
the area. During the project,

researchers will set out to record artefacts of the built military
environment either former sites or some that still exist.
A series of workshops will be held, each covering a specific theme
which will help volunteers along their way, piecing together a
fascinating local history. At the same time, the development and
growth of the area will be explored by visits to the local archives,
other collections and sites.
The project will also undertake a series of oral history interviews to
add first-hand experiences.
Prof Ian Rotherham of Sheffield Hallam University, who is chair of
the group and oversees the project, said: “This is an amazing project
and public interest in the first phase of the research was
overwhelming.
Since then, we have been busy with fresh information that surfaced
and with local people coming forward with stories, memories and
memorabilia. This Heritage Fund project now gives us chance to take
the research to the next level.”
Once a project officer has been appointed to assist the foundation, it
will hold a launch event.
Volunteers are being asked to get involved, no matter how much or
little time they can spare.

EN are now spending just as much as women on beauty
and grooming products, a survey has shown.
While women still spend considerably more on fashion than men,
the male of the species now spends more than ever on male beauty
products and razor blades.
Men are taking their looks far more seriously these days. The
survey for closeshavesociety.com showed that men were spending
more than ever on hair gel, aftershave, moisturiser, shower gel and
deodorant. Figures showed that 86% of men used moisturiser on a
regular basis; while 78% said they would use a dye if they saw grey
hairs. Nearly all men questioned – 95% - said they had researched
which grooming products they were going to buy before making a
purchase.
The most expensive ongoing cost for male grooming is razor
blades. The average (clean-shaven) UK working male shaves three
times a week with a shaving cartridge that's good for five decent
shaves.

A great year
for poppies!
N
ORTH Derbyshire has offered many fields of red this
summer and Dronfield Eye’s Mike Firth discovered this
crop of poppies just over the hill from Dronfield, close to
Middle Handley.
Said Mike: “It was breathtakingly beautiful and once word
spread about all these poppies, people appeared from far and
wide with their cameras.
“I know other photographers also descended on fields of
poppies near Baslow overlooking the Chatsworth Estate.
“I’m unsure of the reason, but I‘ve never seen as many
poppies as this before.”
Meanwhile, keen photographer Clare Davison turned her
attention to the sky to capture this incredible sunset above
Cutthorpe.
Said Clare: “I drove to Curbar Edge and the clouds started to
gather, but it didn't look like it was going to be a good sunset
so I decided to drive home.
“On the way back, I stopped at the layby at the top of
Cutthorpe as there was some really good cloud formations.
I'm so glad I did as I got to witness one of the most amazing
red skies I have ever seen.”
