Claire Wild
Berrington Meadows - Affordable, Local Housing
Shropshire Homepoint are advertising the affordable properties on Berrington
Meadows. There are four one bedroom bungalows and four two bedroom
houses. For the first six weeks, applicants with a local connection take priority.
After this the properties are opened up to the whole of Shropshire. If you are interested in these
properties please contact Shropshire Homepoint. You can only do this online at
www.shropshirehomepoint.co.uk.
Roundabout Installation, Cross Houses
The installation of the roundabout has been delayed. I have asked Fletcher Homes to provide us
with a new timescale for the work but, as yet, have received no response.
Playfield Fields, Brompton Lane
You will see that work has been taking place on the playing fields. We have re-marked the football
pitch and the goals have new nets. We will also be installing netball hoops over the next few weeks.
SmartWater®
The Parish Councils of Atcham and Berrington have agreed to purchase SmartWater® for properties
in the parishes. If 70% of residents register (at no cost) then the Police and Crime Commissioner will
refund the Parish Councils 25% of the cost plus they will arrange for large signs to be placed around
the villages which we are told is one of the major deterrents. We will be rolling this out in the
autumn and further details will be included in the next edition of the Pump.
Hot Weather
With the hot weather forecast always comes the worry of people cooling down in the river, reservoir
and local pools. Please stay safe this summer and keep away from the water.
Have a lovely summer.
Best wishes and kind regards,
News from Christ Church C.E. Primary School
Learning, Listening, Living
The end of the school year brings lots of opportunities to say goodbye to our Year 6s and wish them well as
they journey to secondary school. We know they will succeed and flourish at William Brookes and we look
forward to seeing them when we visit – as we do regularly – for sporting and curriculum events.
We celebrated excellent SATs results in school. Out of our Year 6s who took the papers, 100% achieved at
expected level or higher (exp+) in Maths tests (national average 79%), 100% achieved exp+ in Grammar,
Punctuation and Spelling tests and in Writing assessments (national average is 78%) and 86% achieved exp+
in the Reading test (national average is 73%).
However, tests are only a small part of the primary journey, and my
happy memory from last term involves the whole school. Whilst
academic achievement is important, as a parent myself, I also want
children to show values and care for each other and their environment.
We had a grounds day in our last fortnight of term, which was a fun
way of learning about the importance of chores and care for our school
grounds. We constructed veg beds, weeded, cleaned toys, washed
windows and tidied the outside of school. The children worked in their
four school council groups and it was lovely to see all ages working so
constructively together. It summed up to me the very best spirit of a
village school.
Do enjoy the summer holidays – we look forward to sharing more news
next term.
Autumn term
Acorns: Year R and Year 1 taught by Mrs Martin. Topic is ‘Who am I?’
Holly: Year 2 and Year 3 taught by Mr Kennedy and Mrs Cansdale. Topic is ‘Castles’
Willow: Year 4 and Year 5 taught by Mrs Douch. Topic is ‘Mountains, Rivers and Waters’
Oak: Year 6 taught by Mrs Clarke. Topic is ‘Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Climate Zones’
Acorns work closely with Childrensworld, the on-site nursery (“Outstanding” – Ofsted). They work together
on a Wednesday morning, during ‘Stay and Play’ and Childrensworld come and use our school hall for dance
and join us for some assemblies and special events. Childrensworld also offer wrap around care for school
children 8am-6pm and in the holidays.
If you would like to know more about the school, or visit for a look around, please phone the School Office
on 01952 510383. Don’t wait for an Open Day – we are always happy to show people around if you have a
younger child, are moving into the area or considering a school change. We are the catchment area school
for Cressage, Cross Houses, Cound, Coundmoor, Harley and Eaton Constantine but also welcome children
attending from other villages.
The Church Fete and Duck Race was held on Sunday 7th July. Blessed with good weather and a happy atmosphere it
was lovely to see so many people enjoying all the stalls, teas and the music plus a chance to have a go at bell
ringing. Thanks to the generosity of many, around £2,500 was raised to help with the upkeep of this beautiful historic
building. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way.
Several groups have visited the church during the summer months including The Archaeological Society, The Diocesan
Advisory Committee[who came to look at the work done recently on the new kitchen and bell ringing gallery] and the
Mothers' Union.
The Deanery Synod also met at St.Eata's for their Meeting on June 6th when they were treated to Pimms and nibbles -
they will be back!!!
Baptisms recently we welcomed into the Church family - Jemima Steel, Ava Plimmer and John Neill
HARLEY SCHOOL TO WELCOME PUPILS BACK AFTER 48 YEARS
After closing its doors in July 1961 Harley School (now the village hall) is to
welcome back its pupils to an afternoon of memories, re-collections and
nostalgia (and of course tea and cake)!
All ex-pupils are invited “to come to school” on Sunday 15 th September 2 –
5 pm to share with us their reminiscences, achievements and experiences.
Ironbridge Gorge Museum has kindly offered to loan items ‘the children’
would have used at school at that time. We hope these objects will
provoke memories of their school days, schools friends and teachers of a
bygone era.
Residents of Harley are greatly looking forward to talking to ‘the children”
and will be on hand to capture their recollections and stories. Villager Jerry
Bridgeland said “as we are all getting older and before it’s too late we
would like to capture their recollections of school life in our village”.
So “Ex-pupils from Harley School are invited to an afternoon of
reminiscences, tea and cake 2 – 5 pm on Sunday 15 th September, 2019”
So a recent conversation between parishioners
went something like this….. The question “How do
we make our whole Parish more of a community?”
The response “Doesn’t matter what type of event
you put on, or what you do people will not support
it, we don’t have a community spirit anymore”.
Now there are some people in our parish who are
not willing to accept this…… so……. In an attempt to get a variety of people together from
across the parish a social event has been arranged for Wednesday 18th September, starting
at 7pm at the Cross Houses Community Centre.
To make it as inexpensive as possible bring your own drinks and snacks but if you would like
to bake a cake, bring a cake. There will be darts, dominoes, cards and bingo. If you have a
game you enjoy bring it along and if anyone has a giant Jenga that would be fab ☺
Encourage your neighbours to come along, enjoy a drink and a natter, meet other residents
and, hopefully, make new friends.
In addition if you have any old photos of the parish or of residents from the parish please
bring them along.
We look forward to seeing you on the 18th September.
