<strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

Your sp<strong>in</strong>e houses thousands of nerves that play a<br />

role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sensations you feel as you move, sit,<br />

and sleep. If one of <strong>the</strong>se nerves is irritated, it’s<br />

not unusual for discomfort <strong>to</strong> be felt elsewhere,<br />

such as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> arms, shoulders, or legs. This is<br />

known as radiat<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong>, or radiculopathy.<br />

Common symp<strong>to</strong>ms associated with this type of<br />

nerve pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude numbness and t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g. If this<br />

sensation is what you’re experienc<strong>in</strong>g, here are<br />

five ways <strong>the</strong>se symp<strong>to</strong>ms may be treated.

1. actiVe phYsical <strong>the</strong>rapY<br />

(pt)<br />

Active PT refers <strong>to</strong> any type of<br />

<strong>the</strong>rapeutic exercise that requires<br />

your participation. If you have<br />

numbness and t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from your sp<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> right approach<br />

<strong>to</strong> exercise may free compressed<br />

nerves or ease nerve irritation<br />

enough <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imize your discomfort.<br />

There are many forms of active PT<br />

that may help you achieve <strong>the</strong>se<br />

goals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

ØTargeted stretches<br />

ØRange-of-motion exercises<br />

ØPosture improvement exercises<br />

ØExercises focus<strong>in</strong>g on core muscle groups that support <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e

2. rest coMB<strong>in</strong>ed With<br />

strenGth tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>G<br />

Irritated nerves sometimes just need<br />

time <strong>to</strong> heal. If this is believed <strong>to</strong> be<br />

<strong>the</strong> case with your symp<strong>to</strong>ms, you<br />

may be advised <strong>to</strong> rest <strong>to</strong> give your<br />

compressed nerve time <strong>to</strong> heal.<br />

However, rest should be limited <strong>to</strong> a<br />

brief period and comb<strong>in</strong>ed with<br />

strength tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and similar forms<br />

of <strong>the</strong>rapeutic exercise because <strong>to</strong>o<br />

much rest can weaken sp<strong>in</strong>e-support<strong>in</strong>g muscles and put more pressure on<br />

<strong>the</strong> irritated nerve. Modify<strong>in</strong>g your activities can also be helpful if you<br />

need <strong>to</strong> ease stress on <strong>the</strong> part of your sp<strong>in</strong>e where <strong>the</strong> affected nerve<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ates.

3. Medication<br />

Nerve irritation that results <strong>in</strong><br />

numbness and t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

sometimes aggravated by<br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation around <strong>the</strong> affected<br />

nerve. If this is what’s worsen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

your symp<strong>to</strong>ms, you may be<br />

advised <strong>to</strong> take over-<strong>the</strong>-counter<br />

or prescription anti-<strong>in</strong>flamma<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

drugs. Common over-<strong>the</strong>-counter<br />

options <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

ØAspir<strong>in</strong><br />

ØIbuprofen<br />

ØNaproxen<br />

With prescription NSAID options,<br />

your doc<strong>to</strong>r or Los Angeles sp<strong>in</strong>e<br />

surgeon can make recommendations<br />

more specific <strong>to</strong> your symp<strong>to</strong>ms. Your<br />

unique health-related fac<strong>to</strong>rs will also<br />

be considered.

4. sp<strong>in</strong>al iMplants<br />

In some situations, a nerve is<br />

permanently damaged. When<br />

this happens, it can<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uously send <strong>in</strong>correct<br />

signals that trigger numbness,<br />

t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g, and similar<br />

uncomfortable sensations. If<br />

this is <strong>the</strong> case, you may<br />

benefit from an implantable<br />

device that disrupts nerve signals with mild electrical stimulation. If you’re<br />

a good candidate for an implantable device, you may be given a trial<br />

device that’s not implanted <strong>to</strong> try for a few weeks. If you respond well <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> device, it can <strong>the</strong>n be <strong>in</strong>serted with m<strong>in</strong>imally <strong>in</strong>vasive surgical<br />

techniques.

5. surGerY<br />

If conservative treatment<br />

efforts aren’t provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sufficient relief, <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>r may<br />

recommend a surgical<br />

procedure, such as a lumbar<br />

foram<strong>in</strong>o<strong>to</strong>my. Los Angeles<br />

patients may require surgery if<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a structure, such as a<br />

damaged disc, that’s plac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pressure on a sp<strong>in</strong>al nerve. Surgery for irritated sp<strong>in</strong>al nerves may <strong>in</strong>volve:<br />

ØRemov<strong>in</strong>g or repair<strong>in</strong>g a damaged sp<strong>in</strong>al disc<br />

ØRemov<strong>in</strong>g a bone spur or similar growth<br />

ØCreat<strong>in</strong>g more space around <strong>the</strong> affected nerve by remov<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>al structures<br />

ØRemov<strong>in</strong>g part of <strong>the</strong> damaged nerve<br />

ØUndergo<strong>in</strong>g fusion surgery <strong>to</strong> stabilize <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e if a disc has <strong>to</strong> be removed

S<strong>in</strong>ce numbness and t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g can be symp<strong>to</strong>ms associated with<br />

many different sp<strong>in</strong>e-related issues, it’s important <strong>to</strong> get an<br />

accurate diagnosis before start<strong>in</strong>g treatment. This process<br />

typically <strong>in</strong>volves a physical exam and image tests performed for<br />

<strong>the</strong> purpose of confirm<strong>in</strong>g a suspected source. Nerve conduction<br />

studies or diagnostic <strong>in</strong>jections may also be necessary <strong>to</strong> p<strong>in</strong>po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

<strong>the</strong> affected nerve.<br />

If you’re experienc<strong>in</strong>g numbness, t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g, or severe back pa<strong>in</strong> or<br />

you have any o<strong>the</strong>r questions or concerns about your sp<strong>in</strong>al<br />

health, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry-lead<strong>in</strong>g professionals at The Sp<strong>in</strong>e Institute<br />
