information about
medicinal herb uses that
were obtained from
various sources listed
in the back. This book
can give insight into the
world of medicinal herb
uses. Enjoy your time
with this book and
live vivaciously. The
plant on this page
is a Fumaria.
THE BEGINNING

CATMINT
Catmint is generally used
for women to procure
their courses, being taken
inwardly or outwardly,
either alone, or with other
convenient herbs in a
decoction to bathe them,
or sit over the hot fumes
thereof; and by the frequent
use thereof, it takes away
barrenness, and the wind,
and pains of the mother. It
is also used in pains of the
head coming of any cold
cause, catarrhs, rheums, and
for swimming and giddiness
thereof, and is of special
use for the windiness of the
stomach and belly.

The green herb bruised and
applied to the fundament
and lying there two or three
hours, eases the pains of the
piles; the juice also being
made up into an ointment,
is effectual for the same
purpose. The head washed
with a decoction thereof, it
takes away scabs, and may be
effectual for other parts of
the body also.
It is effectual for any cramp,
or cold aches, to dissolve
cold and wind that afflict
the place, and is used for
colds, coughs, and shortness
of breath. The juice thereof
drank in wine, is profitable
for those that are bruised by
an accident.

OREGANO
Oregano is one of the popular herbs people
use mainly in the kitchen to add oomph to
their dishes. However, this herb not only
enhances the flavor of
your dish, it also gives you
tons of benefits. First, it
reduces oxidative stress,
fights against harmful
free radicals, defends the
body against harmful bacteria, speeds up
metabolism, and promotes good digestion
Also, it balances cholesterol levels, reduces
inflammation in the cardiovascular system,
speeds up the process of toxin elimination,
and promotes bone health. Oregano can also
rejuvenate the body and keeps it energized,
treats urinary tract infections, remedies
sleeping problems, relieves cough and colds,
prevents degenerative arthritis, and heals
wounds and insect bites.

THYME
Thyme is known as a
noble strengthener of the
lungs, as notable a one
as grows; neither is there
scarce a better remedy
growing for that disease
in children which they
commonly call the Chincough,
than it is. It purges
the body of phlegm, and
is an excellent remedy
for shortness of breath. It
kills worms in the belly,
and being a notable herb
of Venus, provokes the
terms, gives safe and
speedy delivery to women
in travail, and brings away
the after birth. It is so
harmless you need not fear
the use of it. An ointment
made of it takes away hot
swellings and warts, helps
the sciatica and dullness of
sight, and takes away pains
and hardness of the spleen.
’Tis excellent for those
that are troubled with the
gout. It eases pains in the
loins and hips. The herb
taken any way inwardly,
comforts the stomach
much, and expels wind.

The leaves of Sage and
Nettles bruised together, and
laid upon the imposthume
that rises behind the ears,
doth assuage it much. The
juice of Sage taken in warm
water, helps a hoarseness and
a cough. The leaves sodden
in wine, and laid upon the
place affected with the palsy,
helps much, if the decoction
be drank; also Sage taken
with Wormwood is good for
the bloody-flux. Pliny saith,
it procures women’s courses,
and stays them coming down
too fast: helps the stinging
SAGE
and biting of serpents, and
kills the worms that breed
in the ear, and in sores. Sage
is of excellent use to help
the memory, warming and
quickening the senses; and
the conserve made of the
flowers is used to the same
purpose, and also for all the
former recited diseases.

The Sun claims privilege in it, and it is under
the celestial Ram. It is an herb of as great
use with us in these days as any whatsoever,
not only for physical but civil purposes. The
physical use of it
(being my present
task) is very much
used both for inward
and outward diseases,
for by the warming
and comforting heat
thereof it helps all cold
diseases, both of the
head, stomach, liver, and belly. The flowers and
conserve made of them, are singularly good to
comfort the heart, and to expel the contagion
of the pestilence; to burn the herb in houses
and chambers, corrects the air in them. Both
the flowers and leaves are very profitable for
women that are troubled with the whites, if they
be daily taken. The leaves are very much used
in bathings; and made into ointments or oil, are
singularly good to help cold benumbed joints,
sinews, or members. It is very comfortable to
the stomach in all the cold griefs thereof, helps
both retention of meat, and digestion, the
decoction or powder being taken in wine. It
is a remedy for the windiness in the stomach,
bowels, and spleen, and expels it powerfully. It
helps those that are liver-grown, by opening
the obstructions thereof. It helps dim eyes, and
procures a clear sight, the flowers thereof being
taken all the while it is flowering every morning
fasting, with bread and salt.
ROSEMARY

LEMON BALM

Often said to help ease stress
and anxiety, Lemon Balm
contains rosmarinic acid.
The herb is also used for
insomnia, cold sores, high
cholesterol, genital herpes,
indigestion, and heartburn.
In essential oil form, the
scent of Lemon Balm is used
to reduce stress. Preliminary
studies suggest that Lemon
Balm extract may inhibit
cholinesterase (the
same mechanism as drugs
that are used for mild to
moderate Alzheimer’s
disease) and also reduce
damage from beta-amyloid
(the protein that builds to
form plaques).

LEMONGRASS
Lemongrass might help
prevent the growth of some
bacteria and yeast. Lemongrass
also contains substances that
are thought to relieve pain and
swelling, reduce fever, improve
levels of sugar and cholesterol
in the blood, stimulate the
uterus and menstrual flow, and
have antioxidant properties.
They are also known to help
stomach and intestinal cramps,
stomach aches, high blood
pressure, convulsions, pain and
swelling, vomiting, cough, achy
joints, fever, common cold,
and diabetes.
