One was the day we woke up to news that the Berlin Wall had fallen in 1989. When I woke up on the west coast of Canada, he was watching TV. He never watched TV in the morning. I remember he looked at 13-year-old me and said with a strange expression, 'The world just changed.' But in 1989, it felt like it had changed for the better. Image by David Mark from Pixabay The second time I felt that rock was on September 11, 2001. The world became darker and scarier. The spectre of terrorism and all the ensuing trickle-down effects have become something we endure. Tightened national laws and security theatre at the airports. Wars which started in the years after and continue to this day. New words in our vocabulary, like Al Qaeda, the Taliban and the Islamic State. We've had villains too numerous to name. We've seen images we never thought we would see. What we have learned; however, is that we endure. Every day, we put one foot in front of the other. The world became darker, but with work, it will become lighter. The days move on, and we move on. A day can rock the world, but the world keeps on going.
