In a time where we tend to become too busy, too
disconnected from ourselves and others, burned
out and overwhelmingly stimulated from our
surroundings, the craving for slowing down and
becoming un-busy has inspired a fast-growing
tendency to slow down and reconnect.
Reconnecting means reactivating the senses in a
gentle way, revisiting one’s values and creating
meaning in one’s life. Rerooting with nature has
a way of calming a busy mind, slowing down the
pace around us and eventually calming the mind,
in order to start observing the world around us.
As we spend less time outside due to our modern
lifestyles, our homes too have been mirroring
the slow living movement. We build our homes
with larger windows to let in more daylight,
more green plants and natural materials move
in. Handmade items from aged wood, stone,
clay, leather and suede have been increasingly
popular in recent years, making our home a
smaller version of the outdoors.
We surround ourselves with our favourite things.
Things that excite us, things we made ourselves,
things that express who we are and stimulate
both an aesthetic and practical need. Yet, simple
living also has a minimalistic take on only buying
exactly what we need. To buy long-lasting,
multifunctional, reusable, quality products that
meet our needs and fit our lifestyle.
Indulging in the slow life, creating the space
and comfortable setting to have meaningful
conversations and experiences with the people
we love. A home becomes the safe place to
retreat to, slow down the pace and breathe. A
place to sit with ourselves, rerooting from within.
It reminds us to take the time to observe the
subtle changes and expiring moments around
us, like the smoke from a newly blown out candle.
