Medway Community
Farm to Celebrate
10 th Anniversary
Newest Initiatives Include Hoedown
Fundraiser & Food Pantry Program
By J.D. O’Gara
Medway Community Farm
is approaching its 10-year mark,
and with that milestone, as things
age, “we are in dire need for
some capital improvement,” says
volunteer Tina Wright.
What better way to raise some
funds than a party? Get ready
for some fun to benefit Medway
Community Farm! A fundraiser
Hoedown will take place at the
Thayer House on Saturday, November
9, 2019, from 7 p.m. until
11 p.m.
“There will be music, some
line dancing, a silent auction, and
an overall fun time!” says Tina
Wright, volunteer for the farm.
She adds that music will include
country favorites but also 70’s,
80’s and 90’s dance tunes by Al
Kennedy of KTK Sound, so the
night will include something for
everyone.
The 21+ event will also feature
light appetizers from locally
grown food from the farm. Proceeds
from the sale of tickets,
which will be $35, will help pay
for a new water pump for irrigating
the fields, a washing station,
greenhouses, as well as a new
tractor.
“We have two vintage tractors
to weed the rows, now,” says
Wright, “probably from 1955.”
The 10 th anniversary of the
Medway Community Farm
comes with nearly a complete
changeover of board leadership.
to students for the first time on
Tuesday, September 4. This was
a day of celebration but also a
day to reflect upon the gratitude
felt towards the citizenry of Millis
for their support in making
this dream happen for the CFB
school community.
Ground breaking for the new
building was held in December
2017, and construction commenced
soon after. The CFB
school community and the town
watched with interest as the
site was cleared and preparations
made to begin pouring the
building foundation. Over the
winter and into the spring, we
watched the skeletal framework
of the building take shape and
gradually acquire an internal
framework for walls and other
structures. When students and
staff returned at the start of the
2018-2019 school year, the shape
of the building was in place, and
excitement was electric when we
all returned from Thanksgiving
break to find walls completed
and window frames in place!
Over the winter and into the
spring construction continued
internally, and CFB teachers
and staff were given a “sneak
preview” escorted tour by the
project team Compass Management
and Agostini-Bacon Construction.
The school was now
feeling less conceptual and more
real, and Diane Jurmain of the
Elementary School Building
Committee shared out information
about building progress to
the community on Facebook. By
the time school ended in June,
classrooms were packed to move
and events were held to honor
the memory of the 1954 Clyde
F. Brown school, including the
creation of a 2019 time capsule
interred within the new building
and open house “farewell” tours
at the old building.
Over the summer, prior to
the start of school, CFB held
“Find Your Way Days,” with
student leaders assisting students
and families as they completed a
scavenger hunt of places to find
around the new school. This
was helpful to the school community
as school opened and
students and families adjusted to
new routines and procedures. A
major highlight of the opening
include an official ribbon cutting
ceremony, held on September 7,
with the citizens of Millis and invited
to attend and speakers Jack
McCarthy (Deputy CEO/Ex-
Elementary School Building
Committee), Superintendent of
School Nancy Gustafson, and
Principal Jason Phelps participating.
Clyde F. Brown Student
Leaders, who also served as tour
guides later, were on hand to provide
a musical selection as they
sang the unofficial school song
“Sweet Clyde F. Brown.”
As the new school year gets
underway, teachers and staff
reflect upon the curriculum and
programming planning that we
have done to prepare us for educating
children in a state-of-the
art, 21 st Century school. In the
younger grades, students will
find more opportunites to personalize
their learning through
adaptive learning platforms, accessed
by Chromebooks, as well
FSPA Celebrates 35th Anniversary
In 1985, lifetime Franklin resident
Raye Lynn Mercer, director,
pianist, and educator, departed
from her private studio of 35
piano students with a vision and
opened the doors of the Franklin
School for the Performing
Arts (FSPA) at 38 Main Street
in Franklin. Offering the region
a one-of-a-kind performing arts
education program that includes
music, dance, and drama under
one roof, FSPA Celebrates its
35th Anniversary Season this
year.
The anniversary celebrations
began with a back-to-school toast
at 38 Main Street for faculty and
FSPA families past and present.
The year’s festivities will include
an anniversary alumni concert
and celebration at THE BLACK
BOX over Thanksgiving weekend,
a special February cabaret
featuring current students,
faculty, alumni, and Broadway
friends of FSPA at one of NYC’s
most prestigious cabaret venues,
the 35th Spring Concert in May,
and more.
Through the years, FSPA has
cultivated relationships with performers
and guest teachers who
are currently dominating their
artistic fields. These artists are
able to mentor FSPA students
through the school’s annual NYC
master class weekend as well as
special workshops held at the
school. “I wish I had a Franklin
School for the Performing Arts in
my life when I was growing up,”
says Tony Award winner Beth
Franklin School for the
Performing Arts Director Raye
Lynn Mercer
Leavel. “It’s invaluable.”
FSPA’s alumni have a long
track record of success. Students
have gone on to appear on Broadway,
in national tours, regional
theater, professional ballet companies,
TV, feature film, opera,
cruise ships, concert dance, and
more. Alum Dan Gleason, currently
in Wicked on Broadway,
says of his FSPA beginnings, “ I
owe a lot of my consistent vocal
health and technique to my years
at FSPA. Healthy singing habits
were ingrained in my body and
now are second nature. FSPA set
me up for success in life and I am
so thankful for my years of training
in my hometown.”
FSPA founder Raye Lynn
Mercer believes that an education
in the performing arts,
whether or not pursued for a professional
career, provides young
people with lasting life skills.
Students of the arts develop personal
attributes including focus,
discipline, self-esteem, and an
understanding of teamwork. Superior
communication and social
skills become attributes of students
who pursue music, dance,
and drama. Conservatory and
career bound students, as well as
those who attend classes for fun,
gain a sense of accomplishment
and the confidence they need to
succeed in all endeavors. FSPA
violin instructor Irina Fainkichen
says of the school’s environment,
“I see FSPA as a second home for
many students. Besides all the opportunities
this school provides,
and believe me, there are so
many, I love that everybody has
so much fun together. We are like
Millis Select Board Grants Millis Plastic
Reduction Initiative a Warrant Article
By J.D. O’Gara
Members of the Millis Plastic
Reduction Initiative (MPRI)
presented their environmentally-friendly
case for a change
to Millis bylaws to the Millis
Select Board on Monday, September
16 th . The citizens’ group
hopes to reduce the use of plastics
and plastic waste in town by
becoming the 123 rd municipality
in Massachusetts to ban thinfilmed,
single-use plastic bags at
checkout at retail locations in
town.
Presenting members of the
group noted that:
• the town of Millis uses an
estimated 4.3 million plastic
bags a year
• plastic bags are not biodegradable
and only with the
presence of light take 200 to
1,000 years to break down
in the environment
• plastic breaks up into tiny
particles that infiltrate every
step in the food chain
• eliminating this waste will
aid the town’s effort to
create a cleaner recycling
stream, possibly saving
money
The town’s Select Board
voted unanimously to place
MPRI’s proposed bylaw as an
article on the November 4 town
meeting warrant. The Millis Select
Board explained that it was
neither recommending nor opposing
the actual measure, but
allowing the article to move forward.
The group will present its
case to the Millis Finance Committee
on October 2 nd .
In April, the Millis Plastic
Reduction Initiative showed the
movie Bag It at the Millis Public
Dean College Students Participate in Banner
Ceremony at the New England Patriots Home Opener
Close to 200 Dean College
students projected enthusiasm as
they participated in the banner
ceremony at New England Patriots’
home opener at Gillette
Stadium.
The students, composed of
Arts and Entertainment Management,
Business, Communications,
Dance, Sports Broadcasting
and Sport Management majors,
assisted in rolling out a 50-yardlong
banner that would eventually
become a projection screen
with a Patriots highlight reel for
the crowd to enjoy, as the six-time
Super Bowl champions revealed
their latest banner.
This was not a job for the
weak; students were split into
two groups and tasked as a team
St. Michael’s Celebrates 60 Years
To Celebrate Applefest and Blessing of the
Animals this Month
By J.D. O’Gara
St. Michael’s Episcopal
Church, which has welcomed a
number of congregants from the
former St. Paul’s Church of Millis
(as well as stained glass windows
from the latter), celebrated
its 60 th anniversary on Sunday,
September 29 th , 2019, the Feast
of St. Michael’s and All Angels,
and it’s got more planned for its
anniversary week.
On Saturday, October 5 th ,
St. Michael’s will hold its annual
rain or shine Applefest
Fair on Saturday October 5 th
at 1162 Highland Street, Holliston,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The fair will feature a bake sale,
basket raffle, children’s activities
(including face painting, pumpkin
painting, cookie decorating
and a bouncy house (weather
permitting)), homemade jams,
jellies and pickles at a Country
Store, food and beverages from
“Bob’s Grill,” homemade apple
crisp, and an indoor tag sale
from “Aunt Stella’s Attic” with
hundreds of items at spectacular
prices.
The day after Applefest, on
October 6 th , St. Michael’s will
honor St. Francis of Assisi with
its Blessing of the Animals service
at 10 a.m. Folks are invited
to bring their suitably leashed
or caged animal friends to the
service.
“The Blessing of the Animals
is one of the most favorite services
of the entire year,” says St.
Michael’s Reverend Sarah Robbins-Cole.
“It’s a cacophony of
meows and barks and sometimes
chickens and bunnies. I think in
the past there may have been a
goat or two. It’s just a lot of fun.
It’s very noisy, and a lot of fun.”
Robbins-Cole has been pastor
at St. Michael’s for five years.
The church officially began on
Sunday, September 20, 1959,
with the Rt. Rev. Anson Stokes,
Bishop of Massachusetts, conducted
the commissioning service
for the new mission. For
over a year, service would be
held at Holliston Town Hall
by The Rev. George L. Packard,
Priest-in-Charge, before it
moved to a space above Harold
Youngling’s hardware store
on Washington Street, where
Fiske’s now operates. The parishioners
held many fundraisers
to be able to build a church
building on the three acres of
property at 1162 Highland St. in
Holliston, which the diocese had
purchased for $8,000 in 1960.
There, it built a strong congregation.
“St. Michael’s is just filled
with warm and wonderful people.
They’re very welcoming –
that’s what we hear most,” says
Robbins-Cole. “Clergy who fill
in here on a Sunday if I’m away
will ask me if the congregation is
as warm and wonderful as they
seem. It’s filled with lots of interesting
people, and I think a distinctive
feature of the church is
how much they love to help the
community around them.”
Congregants have helped
Habitat for Humanity, have
made lunches for building project
volunteers and for area shelters
and food pantries, and have
gone to Appalachia to help repair
houses with their bi-yearly,
intergenerational Appalachia
Service Project.
Robbins-Cole says the group
is committed to Christian formation,
with a strong Sunday
School program and an opportunity
for adults to learn more
in its Sunday morning forum at
9 a.m. On Tuesdays, the church
features a Bible study, and it
even boasts a book group. Leading
up to Christmas, during Advent,
adults can also take part in
Companions in Christ for more
learning and fellowship, she
says.
“Another distinctive feature
of our church is we have a really
committed choir, with a choir
director and organist who are
really fun to work with and have
really great music to sup our services,”
says Robbins-Cole.
As with any anniversary, says
Robbins-Cole, a time for reflection
arises.
“It’s a reminder to turn where
God is calling us at any particular
time as the culture around us
may change, and it’s an opportunity
to grow on our strengths.
We have a mission statement
which I think stands the test of
time – that we are a Christian
Community whose vision is to
strengthen our relationship with
God and one another, and to
spread God’s love. I think that at
the 60 th anniversary, we will give
thanks for all the ways that we
did that in the past and continue
that mission and understand
that calling in changing circumstances
and context.”
Things, she says, aren’t really
that different from Biblical
times.
“When you study the Bible,
you see the kind of issues that
we’re dealing with and facing
are the same issues going on
3,000 years ago,” she says. The
Bible is constantly telling us to
love the stranger, feed the hungry,
clothe the prisoner, heal the
sick, visit the lonely and lose the
bonds of the oppressed. That’s
going on for years and years.
M.E.R.I.T. Haunted Hayride October 19th
By J.D. O’Gara
Come dig up a few friends
and drag them over to Tangerini’s
Farm on October 19th
where M.E.R.I.T. (Millis Educational
Resource Initiatives
Team) is brewing up a hairraising
Halloween haunt for its
Annual Haunted Hayride. The
event will take place beginning
at 4:30, with a less creepy adventure
from 4:30-6:30 and the
more devilishly dreadful antics
taking place from 6:30-10 p.m.
Refreshments, such as cookies,
water, hot chocolate and popcorn,
will be available for $1.
Tickets are $10.
“I always like to point out
that spooky is still spooky, so use
your judgment when it comes
to young children,” says Theresa
Mahoney, President of the
M.E.R.I.T. Board of Directors.
According to Mahoney, the
annual affair is generally planned
with a skeleton crew. “We’re always
looking for fresh blood,”
she muses. “We could always
use more volunteers, as with
any nonprofit organization. We
do appreciate the volunteers we
have running the scare stations.
We couldn’t do it without
them.”
This is the biggest fundraiser
of the year for the all-volunteer
organization that funds educational
initiatives in the Millis
Public Schools, although it will
also host a scarecrow decorating
contest at the Millis Middle
School this year, in which classrooms
will take turns creating the
creepy characters, and families
purchase tickets to vote for their
favorites. The tickets later act as
a raffle of sorts, with the winning
family collecting the scarecrow
for their home.
Unlike previous years, the
Haunted Hayride will have an
alternate date, in case of catastrophic
weather.
“Last year we had to cancel it
in the first time ever in the history
of the hayride, because safety
was a concern, which was hard
for us,” says Mahoney. “This
year, for the first time, we do have
a nor’easter date – still rain or
shine—but in case of imminent
death—it’s October 26th.”
Mahoney says the group
hopes to sell 700 tickets to the
Haunted Hayride. Tickets will be
available for sale starting October
first at Roche Bros. and Tangerini’s,
and two ticket sales, on
October 5th and October 12th,
will be held from 10 a.m. until 3
p.m. at the Millis Public Library.
Mahoney would also like to
scare up a few corporate sponsors
both for the event and to
increase fund the group has for
grants. MERIT has given back
to the schools over $300,000
since 1991, welcoming applications
from teachers, administrators
and residents for proposals
that address curriculum-related
learning projects. Projects should
enhance and improve the educational
services of the Millis Public
School system.
Last year, for example, grants
M.E.R.I.T. (Millis Educational
Resource Initiatives Team) will
hold its annual Haunted Hayride
at Tangerini’s Spring Street
Farm on October 19th, rain or
shine. (N’oreaster date: Oct. 26)
M.E.R.I.T.
funded such initiatives as a field
trip to the international WWII
Museum, a Vocational Office
Skills Project for special education,
a research initiative by the MS/
HS librarian, Project Safe Space
by a school adjustment counselor,
STEM projects, a wellness program,
a program on creating a
multi-sensory, multi-movement
classroom, a biome building project
and more. M.E.R.I.T. is currently
accepting grant proposals,
and the grant application can be
found on its website.
MERIT would not be able
to provide these grant awards
without community support.
sponsors. For more information,
Cataract Surgery: Time to be Panoptimistic!
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration has recently
approved the first cataract intraocular
lens implant that provides
cataract patients with an
extended depth-of-focus, which
helps improve their sharpness
of vision (visual acuity) at near,
intermediate and far distances.
The PanOptix Lens is here, a
masterpiece in design and function
and a real advancement in
cataract surgery implants.
Cataracts are a common eye
condition where the natural lens
becomes clouded, impairing a
patient’s vision. According to the
National Eye Institute, more than
20% of Americans will have cataracts
by the age of 65, and the
prevalence increases with age.
In cataract surgery, the clouded
natural lens is removed and replaced
with an intraocular lens
implant. While intraocular lenses
have been the mainstay of cataract
treatment for many years,
we continue to see advances in
this technology. The PanOptix
Lens implant provides a new option
for patients that may result
in better vision across a broader
range of distances.
Traditional monofocal implants
have been limited to improving
distance vision. With
those traditional implants, only
one distance is corrected, so if
you choose to correct for distance
only, close-up vision is blurry…
and vice versa…The PanOptix
Lens implant improves visual
acuity at close, intermediate and
far ranges and, therefore, will
reduce the need for patients to
wear contact lenses or glasses
after cataract surgery.
At the time of cataract surgery,
you have the opportunity
to enhance your vision with the
PanOptix Lens. Through a tiny
incision, the surgeon removes
your clouded lens. The surgeon
replaces your original lens with
the PanOptix Lens. The PanOptix
Lens enhances your vision for
clear, complete focus. With the
PanOptix Lens, you can seize
every day. Without cataracts.
Without hesitation. Without
holding back.
PanOptix is clinically shown
to deliver an exceptional combination
of near, intermediate,
and distance vision while
reducing the need for glasses
after surgery. PanOptix is one
of the leading presbyopiacorrecting
IOLs in more than
70 countries and is now available
in the US after FDA approval.
In a clinical study, 129
patients were asked about their
experience with the PanOptix
Lens: 99% of people with the
PanOptix Lens would choose
the same lens again. 98% of
people with the PanOptix Lens
would recommend it to family
and friends. PanOptix patients
demonstrated exceptional, uninterrupted
vision. The results
showed high patient satisfaction.
Imagine how you could use
clear, complete vision. Spot a familiar
face, drive a car, watch TV,
see at arm’s length with enhanced
intermediate vision, read a menu,
see the mirror, use a computer,
read a book, take up crafting, use
a cell phone. Do all of those tasks
with no or little dependence on
glasses. The PanOptix Lens is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
that opens up a million more.
The PanOptix lens implant is
also available in four toric models,
which are indicated for the
reduction of residual refractive
astigmatism or imperfections
in the curvature of the
eye. This availability means
that distance, intermediate and
close vision are all corrected
in addition and at the same
time as correcting astigmatism.
Cataract surgery is all about
better precision, more safety
and excellent outcomes. At Milford
Franklin Eye Center, Dr.
Kaldawy is proud to have been
the first surgeon in the area and
among the first in Massachusetts
to offer bladeless laser assisted
cataract surgery and the first surgeon
in the greater Boston area
to implant the new PanOptix
lens implant. We are happy to
bring this technology to the area.
The top five teaching hospitals
in the nation offer bladeless laser
cataract surgery. We offer the
same. We implant high quality
premium lenses only, with correction
for distance, near and everything
in between. Many cases
of astigmatism are no longer a
problem as these implants can
now be offered even if you have
astigmatism. Our percentage of
posterior capsule complications
and infections is one of the lowest
in the nation. No more need
to travel hours for your cataract
surgery! We operate in a state-ofthe-art
surgery center in Milford
offering bladeless laser cataract
surgery. 100% of the surgeries
are performed under topical anesthesia,
so only drops, no need
for shots around or behind the
eye and their risks and no need
for stitches. No knife, no shots, no
stitch surgery.
Cataract surgery results second
to none here, closer to home,
in Milford and now with the new
Panoptic implant, it is time to
be Panoptimistic!
Dean College
Presents:
Radium Girls,
October 17-20, 2019
The School of the Arts at
Dean College will perform Radium
Girls, beginning Thursday,
October 17 through Sunday,
October 20, 2019.
In 1926, radium was a miracle
cure, Madame Curie an international
celebrity, and luminous
watches the latest rage—until the
girls who painted them began to
fall ill with a mysterious disease.
Inspired by a true story, Radium
Girls traces the efforts of Grace
Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights
for her day in court. Written
with warmth and humor, and
envisioned by guest director
Aaron Andrade, Radium Girls is a
fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble
piece. Called a «powerful»
and «engrossing» drama by
critics, it offers a wry, unflinching
look at the peculiarly American
obsessions with health, wealth,
and the commercialization of
science.
Radium Girls is presented by
special arrangement with Dramatic
Publishing.
The Dean College production
of Radium Girls will take place in
the Main Stage in the Campus
Center at Dean College, 109
West Central Street, Franklin at
7:30 p.m. Thursday – Saturday
and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
General admission is $22,
Seniors $12 and Children $7.
Dean College Ranks
Among the Top Best
Regional Colleges
Dean College, a private, residential
college located in Franklin,
Massachusetts, has been
ranked 25th in the 2020 U.S.
News & World Report Best Colleges
rankings for the Best Regional
Colleges, North category.
This is the ninth consecutive
year that Dean College has received
the Best College honor.
“We are thrilled to be recognized
by U.S. News and our
peer institutions once again
this year,” said Dr. Paula M.
Rooney, Dean College President.
“It signals the overall
strength of Dean’s academic
experience and the emphasis
we place on student success.”
U.S. News & World Report is
a multi-platform, publisher of
news and information. The U.S.
News ranking system for the
Best Regional Colleges rests on
two pillars. The formula uses
quantitative measures that education
experts have proposed as
reliable indicators of academic
quality, and it is based on research
of what matters in education,
including: graduation
rate performance, academic
reputation, and financial selectivity
among others.
This year’s ranking is a testament
to The Dean Difference –
the hands-on and engaging
faculty & staff, strong academic
support, valuable internships,
and real-life workforce preparation
that Dean College provides.
Baskerville Oct. 18, 19
Just in time for Halloween,
Performance
dates are Friday, October 18 at
The world’s most famous
detective and his trusty sidekick
Watson face down their
most notorious case of all in this
madcap retelling of the ultimate
Victorian whodunit from the
mastermind of mayhem, Ken
Ludwig.
A stunningly nimble cast of
five takes on nearly 40 characters,
coming on and off stage almost
as quickly as the twists and
turns of this delightfully complex
plot, as Holmes and Watson
race against time to crack
the mystery of The Hound of
Medway Police Chase 5K
Rescheduled to Oct. 19
the Baskervilles before a family
The intrepid investigators’
Can our heroes discover
the truth in time? Can costume
changes really be that fast?
The play will thrill
you with suspense,
Medway Public Schools Host Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony for New Playground at McGovern School
On September 19th, 2019,
Medway Public Schools held a
ribbon cutting ceremony for a
brand-new playground at Mc-
Govern Elementary at 9 Lovering
Street in Medway.
“Recess is an important part
of the school day where kids can
interact with one another outside
of a classroom setting and spend
some time outdoors. Having
this brand-new equipment with
lots of different activities to do
will help to enhance recess and
also provide a great space for
the community to come out and
play after school, Superintendent
Medway Public Schools have
now opened two brand-new
playgrounds at the McGovern
School and Francis Burke-Memorial
Elementary School.
Funding for both playgrounds
was paid for in part by generous
donations from the Medway Elementary
Parent Teacher Organization
(MEPTO) and Medway
Extended Day (MEDI). The rest
of the funds were approved at
Town Meeting in May.
The playgrounds were designed
and built by Medwaybased
outdoor equipment
supplier M.E. O’Brien and Sons,
Inc. Construction on both playgrounds
began over the summer
and was completed on the week
of Aug. 26, before the start of the
new school year.
Both playgrounds are compliant
with the Americans With
Disabilities Act (ADA) and will be
used by about 500 students at the
Burke-Memorial School and 350
students at the McGovern School
each day.
“The previous playgrounds
were both over 15 years old and
Kane’s Versatility Key Asset for Millis Football Squad
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Pictures sometimes accompany
words in a dictionary to
emphasize definitions. When
it comes to defining versatility,
it wouldn’t be surprising to see
Bryan Kane’s photo next to the
word.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound
Kane plays football for Millis
High and the junior captain personifies
versatility. He can play
linebacker or safety on defense,
and on offense he can be used as
a running back, wide receiver or
quarterback.
“Versatility is an asset,’’ he
said. “I don’t mind playing any
of the five positions. It presents a
lot of different opportunities and
it helps to better understand the
game. Sacrificing for the welfare
of the team is important.’’
Head coach Brian Kraby is
counting on Kane to contribute
in a variety of ways to help the
Mohawks improve on last year’s
4-6 record that prevented them
from qualifying for a playoff
berth. Now in his second year as
Millis’ head coach, Kraby is delighted
Kane has overcome an
elbow injury and very pleased
Kane was selected by his teammates
to be a captain.
“Bryan should be able to take
advantage of having a solid offensive
line,’’ Kraby said. “He’ll
be effective running the ball because
he’s a grinder. He’ll gain
four or five yards and if he gets
to the outside, he can break it
for long runs. On defense, he’s
tough as nails, and we expect
him to make lots of tackles.’’
Bryan Kane is only a junior, but he’s a captain whose versatility, mature
approach, and classy style make him a breed apart.
Kraby also is bullish on
Kane as a captain. “We’re a
young team and Bryan will be
extremely important in establishing
our chemistry,’’ Kraby
added. “He’ll help keep the
players positive and optimistic.’’
Kane, who also has experience
as a varsity basketball and
baseball player, says football is
his favorite sport, and he wants
play it in college. The odds are
high that college ball is in his future,
especially after attending a
summer camp in Ohio in June.
I went to a USA Football regional
camp at Bryant University,’’
Kane noted. “I started as a
receiver, but finished up at safety.
When it ended, I was selected to
attend the national USA camp
in Ohio. I was one of 260 to be
chosen, truly an honor. The four
days were so valuable. It was intense
and the instruction was
great. I learned a lot at safety,
and I’ve shared that knowledge
with teammates.’’
Besides his versatile nature,
Kane has other assets. “Bryan
has a high football IQ, he’s passionate
about football, he’s athletic
and coachable, and he’s got
size and strength,’’ Kraby said.
Those plusses were on display
in the Mohawks first two games
— a victory over Randolph
and a loss to Shawsheen Tech.
After the two games, Kane had
178 yards rushing and 63 yards
receiving. He recorded 17 tackles
and 2 interceptions playing
safety.
“My team goals for the season
are to get to the playoffs,
beat Medway and defeat Dover-
Sherborn,’’ Kane emphasized.
“We’ve got the talent and the
dedication to qualify for the
tourney. I’d like to defeat Medway,
our top rival, and Dover-
Sherborn games are always
intense and fun. I also want to
promote team chemistry. Personally,
if I continue at running
back, I’d like to gain 1,000 yards
and be selected as a Tri Valley
League all-star.’’
A native of Millis, Kane has
been hampered by torn ligaments
in his elbow for the last two
years. He was injured as a freshman
catcher in baseball trying to
throw out a runner stealing.
“I heard a pop,’’ Kane recalled.
“I didn’t have surgery but
I spent five months in rehab. I
missed half of the baseball season
as a freshman and missed
two games in football as a sophomore.
I skipped baseball last
spring to make sure I’d be fully
healthy as a junior.’’
Not only is Kane healthy, but
he’s also a captain who’s eager
to be a leader. “It’s a big honor
to be a captain as a junior,’’ he
said. “I’ll lead by example, by
being vocal, and I’ll also be supportive.’’
Kane is quick to laud three
teammates he expects to be
major contributors this season.
Two are captains — junior Tally
Smith and senior Johnny Pateuk
— and junior Ernesto Olivieri.
Smith is a linebacker and defensive
end, Pateuk plays linebacker,
tackle and fullback and
Olivieri plays tackle and nose
guard.
“Tally is a junior who’s a
quality leader,’’ Kane said.
“He’s respected, and he plays
aggressively. Johnny is also respected,
and he’s a hard hitter.
Ernesto is energetic, aggressive
and pursues very well.’’
Kane also appreciates Kraby,
admiring his coach on three
fronts. “Coach Kraby treats us
like a family,’’ Kane stressed.
“He knows the game, and he’s a
strong motivator.’’
Kane’s style on both sides
of the ball is easy to classify —
he’s aggressive, likes to hit and
he thrives on pursuit. A starter
in eight games last year, he had
45 tackles, 6 tackles for losses, 2
fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions.
“My two best games were
against Dover-Sherborn as a
freshman and against Hull last
year,’’ he said. “Both were victories.
My first start was as a
freshman against D-S and I had
10 tackles and forced a fumble.
Against Hull, I had 10 tackles, 2
sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 1
forced fumble.’’
An honor-roll student, Kane
plans on majoring in business
administration in college. He’s
not sure yet what school he’ll attend,
but he wants to continue
playing football, a sport that has
sharpened his athletic philosophy
and helped him learn valuable
life lessons.
“My competitive philosophy
is to win, to reach my potential
and to enjoy sports,’’ he emphasized.
“Some of the life lessons
I’ve learned are how to overcome
adversity and obstacles,
how to deal with losing, and how
to become a strong leader.’’
Mia Ferzoco Moves Up as Mentor in Millis Volleyball
By Christopher Tremblay,
Staff Sports Writer
Growing up Millis’ Mia Ferzoco
had been involved in gymnastics
since the early age of
three, but by the seventh grade,
she would find a new sport, and
gymnastics would soon become
a thing of the past. Thanks to her
friend, Hailey Chilsolm, Ferzoco
would be introduced to volleyball.
“Gymnastics was an individual
sport, where volleyball is all
about the team atmosphere,” the
Millis senior said. “After finding
volleyball, I decided to stop
gymnastics in ninth grade as it
was very time consuming and my
school work was getting harder.”
Soon after she found volleyball,
Ferzoco joined the Blast, a
club team out of Lincoln, Rhode
Island. Taking part with the Blast
as well as playing on the high
school team helped the newly
found volleyball player improve
her skills.
During her freshman and
sophomore seasons, Ferzoco
saw the majority of her playing
time with the junior varsity team
with a handful of games coming
here and there on the varsity
level. By her junior year, she
was starting for the Mohawks
as the team’s setter in addition
to being named a captain for the
first time. Being named a captain
was something totally new
and very strange to her.
“Being named captain my junior
year was a great honor, but
it was something that was totally
out of my comfort zone, and I had
to become a leader to the rest of
the team,” the now two-time senior
captain said. “It was very
nerve racking at first, but I eventually
felt comfortable with the
girls on the hand, especially when
they were helping me through it.”
Ferzoco, who had already played
four seasons with the Mohawk
volleyball program, had seen how
the upper classmen were enjoying
the sport and that was something
that she wanted to do as well. The
now senior setter originally found
her position to be somewhat challenging.
“Again, being a setter for the
team took me out of my comfort
zone as I had to be one of the
loudest players on the court and
pushing the other girls,” she said.
Mia Ferzoco has had a chance to
grow as an athlete and as a leader
in her time with Millis Volleyball.
“While it was not easy at first,
I believe it was for the best as I
am now a totally different person
when I step onto the court.”
Although Ferzoco didn’t see
herself as a team leader, her coach
certainly did.
“What can I say about a kid
who just gets it, she is a born
leader but that doesn’t stop her
from pushing to learn and achieve
more,” Millis Volleyball Coach
Lisa Farese said. “She works each
moment of each day to better not
only herself, but those around her
as well. She may not be the oldest
or most experienced athlete in
the gym, but she bridged the gap
between all of our teams.”
Now as a senior, Ferzoco has
to remember what it was like
when she was an underclassmen
and wants to use that to her advantage
in preparing the younger
girls on this year’s team.
“I need to stay loud and positive,
even if I’m not playing at my
best,” she said. “It can be tough at
times, but I have to remember that
the younger girls look up to me so
I need to stay positive and keep
the energy high.”
Once she steps onto the court,
Ferzoco may seem to be all in and
serious, but at times she wipes the
seriousness away and is all smiles.
“I often find myself thinking
how do I coach the philosophy of
working hard, while being willing
to take risks. We are always
looking for progression and not
perfection,” the Mohawk Coach
said. “But then because of Mia I
am reminded that we just need to
have fun. She puts in the work on
and off the court, but makes sure
she opens her arms to silliness and
that makes our team a family.”
Last fall Millis finished the regular
season with a 10-10 record
and found themselves playing in
the Division 3 Central Volleyball
Tournament. The Mohawks were
able to defeat Bellingham 3-0 in
the round, but unfortunately meet
up with Whitinsville-Christian,
the eventual Sectional Champions,
in the next round.
With the volleyball team advancing
into the post-season Ferzoco
was not only excited about
the opportunity that the team had
but with her own play.
“I felt that I had played really
well last year,” she said. “But
being the setter my success is because
of those around you, you
need the whole team to do well.”
As the season gets underway
the senior setter knows that it’s
not going to be an easy campaign
this fall.
“We’re in a rebuilding year,
and I don’t want the younger girls
to get discouraged,” she said. “I
want the younger girls to learn,
but also keep volleyball fun.”
Despite being her only varsity
returner this season the Coach is
anxious to get things started and
see what her setter brings to the
table this year.
“I am super excited to see what
she can do with our team,” Farese
said. “Now that she is not only
the oldest, but most experienced
player on the court.”
In addition to keeping volleyball
fun, Ferzoco is hoping to play
a competitive game while also enjoying
her senior year. Once the
season ends, the senior would
like to continue playing the sport
on the collegiate level, but most
likely on a club level.
Comparing Ultra-Safe Investment Options
With savings account rates at
historic lows, many retirees and
other savers are uncertain where
to go to stretch their dollars,
while keeping their assets as safe
as possible.
Options include certificates of
deposit (CDs), money market accounts,
U.S. Treasury securities
and fixed-deferred annuities.
How do they compare? Here’s
an overview:
Certificates of deposits (CDs):
Issued primarily by banks, a certificate
of deposit (CD) is a savings
vehicle with a fixed maturity
date and a fixed interest rate that
is insured by the Federal Deposit
Insurance Corporation (FDIC)
for up to $250,000 per CD
holder. CDs are typically used
for short- to medium-term savings
needs. They typically offer
a higher investment return than
traditional savings accounts, but
lower rates of return than fixeddeferred
annuities.1
www.nesteakandseafood.com
Money market accounts: A
money market account usually
combines the flexibility of a traditional
savings account with a
higher interest rate and the ability
to write a limited number of
checks. Money market accounts
seek to maintain a stable $1 unit
value and because of their stability
are often used as “parking
places” for liquid assets. These
accounts also are backed by the
FDIC, and typically require a
larger minimum balance than a
savings account.2
Treasury securities: Treasury
securities are essentially loans
to the federal government, and
come in three forms. T-Bills offer
the shortest terms—four, 13, 26,
and 52 weeks. T-Notes occupy
the middle, maturing in two,
three, five, seven, or 10 years,
while T-Bonds, known as “long
bonds,” offer a 30-year maturity
date and will pay interest on a
semiannual basis. Treasury securities
rank among the safest
investments, because they have
the backing of the “full faith and
credit” of the U.S. government
as to the timely payment of interest
and principal. However,
they are subject to inflation and
their values fluctuate in response
to changes in interest rates.3
Fixed-deferred annuities: A
fixed-deferred annuity offers
some of the benefits of a CD,
including the ability to generate
interest safely, while also giving
the holder the ability to delay
the payment of income taxes
on money earned on the annuity.
Their aim is to return your
principal investment to you with
interest.
Fixed-deferred annuities are
typically used for long-term funding
needs related to retirement.
However, access to the funds in
an annuity is limited, and fixeddeferred
annuities involve insurance-
related fees and charges.
They are issued by insurance
companies and are not backed
by the FDIC. Therefore, the financial
stability of the issuing insurance
company is key. You can
evaluate the financial strength of
an insurance company by checking
its ratings by independent
sources, which include Moody’s,
A.M. Best, Standard & Poor’s,
and Fitch.4
benefit the National Breast Cancer
Foundation (NBCF), anyway.
“I’ve been fortunate I have not
been affected, nor have my immediate
family and friend, but why
wait for something to get close to
home before I do something about
it? Why not do something about it
now?” says Bradford, who’s lived
in Medway for 22 years and is a
member BNI, Business Networking
This is the second year she’s organized
“A Night to Fight Breast
a cash bar, but children are welcome
as long as they’re accompanied
by a parent or guardian. In
addition, one of the vendors will
On Wednesday, August 28,
2019, Patrol Officer Derek
Harrington was promoted to
moment when retired officer
and mentor, David McRoberts
and Town Administrator,
few words during the ceremony
about Sergeant Harrington’s
commitment and dedication not
only to the police department
but to the community itself.
“It is very fitting that Sergeant
Harrington is being pinned today
by his mentor, Officer McRoberts.
We
are certainly
getting
a very
solid mentor
t o
our newer officers in Sergeant
Harrington,” said Town Administrator,
Michael Boynton.
Sergeant Harrington’s career
started in 1997 as a dispatcher
for the Medway Police
Department. He moved up the
ladder to patrol officer in 2002
and has served as a police investigator
for the last year and a
half. In addition to his commitment
to the Medway Police Department
he is also a dedicated
member of the Medway community,
currently serving in the
role as the Men’s High School
Varsity Hockey Coach. Derek
and his wife, Courtney, have four
children.
