The Hero Arm
The Hero Arm is a lightweight myoelectric prosthesis
with a versatile multi-grip bionic hand, an adjustable and
breathable socket, high-performance motors and
batteries, and empowering aesthetics. It is the most
affordable multi-grip bionic arm in the world, less than
half the price of its nearest competitor. The Hero Arm is
durable, reliable, medically approved, and FDA registered.
It is available through prosthetics clinics for both adults
and children as young as eight years old with acquired or
congenital below-elbow upper limb differences.
Open Bionics
Open Bionics was founded in 2014 by Joel Gibbard and
Samantha Payne with the goal of developing affordable,
assistive devices that enhance the human body. In other
words, we turn disabilities into superpowers. Based in
Bristol in the U.K., we’re building Hero Arms for people
with limb differences all over the world. Your clinician will
send us a 3D scan or cast of your residual limb, and we
custom build your Hero Arm.

“When I first received my
Hero Arm I was absolutely
blown away. To be able to
put it on and just start
moving the fingers straight
away was just amazing.”
- Kim Smith, from Milton
Keynes, U.K.
Engineered especially for you
We receive a 3D scan or physical cast of your residual
limb from your prosthetist to create a custom-built
prosthesis. Your Hero Arm socket is comfortable,
breathable, and adjustable, which means it’s easy to
take on and off while providing you with the best
possible fit.
Intuitive and effortless
With the Hero Arm, technology is at your fingertips.
Literally. Special EMG sensors within the Hero Arm
detect muscle movements, meaning you can
intuitively control your bionic hand. You’ll be able to
cycle through a variety of grips (hook, tripod and
pinch) and receive feedback through haptic vibrations,
beepers and buttons.
“I can grip a toothbrush, use a
knife and fork, brush my hair
having to tape the controller
to my hand like I used to.”
“Zak’s previous prosthetics were a little
bit heavier and not as user-friendly to
him, and so he wasn’t overly excited to
use them at the time. The Hero Arm is
lighter, and he had more input into the
colour and the design, so he felt more
part of the process.”
- Lesley Dubin, (Zak’s mum) from
Michigan, U.S.A.
Lightweight, powerful, strong
Even though the Hero Arm is powered by high performance
and at 280g – 346g (0.62lbs – 0.76lbs), is the lightest on the
market. The full prosthesis weighs less than 1kg (2lbs). It’s
strong too, able to lift up to 8kg (17.5lbs).
