Where has this year gone? I can’t believe this is the last journal of 2019!
It has been a great year for our industry
sector with an even bigger Clerkenwell
Design Week, which enabled us to
showcase our expertise, demonstrate
how CFAS is an instrumental hub of the
industry and how we promote our members
products/services to both the end user and
trade industry.
There were new enterprises and the joining up
of big organisations, everywhere you looked!
And it was fantastic to see the many new
innovations, created around sustainability
where environmental achievements awards
have been gained. It was also very apparent
that recycling is a huge consideration with the
majority of manufacturers in product design, as
is the packaging and transport.
We are already excitedly looking to next year’s
features, whereby we are collating articles,
news and information for our readers.

Having just received this journal, you will be
fully aware that it’s the week before the ‘B’
deadline, so we are sure there will be a hiatus
of news, concerns and opposing views during

of calm about our industry sector.
Social media is still gaining in popularity, and
is no longer for the ‘youth’ and consumers,
it is becoming increasingly more important in
the b2b arena - with more and more members
utilising the CFAS support services to promote
their business. But still, the printed journals
are hugely popular, as our readership likes to
sit back and absorb the news, articles and
adverts.

WORKPLACE HEALTH & WELLBEING
There are many studies and white papers regarding how
to increase productivity, reduce workplace stress, create
communication and team working … you name it, there
has probably been research about it.
Just like the contradictory arguments about salt, no salt, the debate continues
about open plan verses traditional offices. There are design elements which
have been in the workplace for years, which are now classified as health and
wellbeing, biophilic and people-led design. Styles that Designers have been
incorporating whenever the budget allows, are now deemed as necessary
factors in the recognition that the workplace environment affects employee
health and wellbeing.
Plants have been on desks, in reception areas and have brightened up dull
offices since the beginning of time. Desks used to be solid wood, then wood
effect, bringing a natural warmth into the workplace. Recognising that the
human animal is in harmony with nature, and so replicating natural in an
unnatural environment can both relax through familiarity and invigorate by
de-stressing.
In shop floors, manufacturing areas and public spaces, music is a common
feature, creating a background of joviality, overriding production noise and
breaking up silence. Today many offices allow staff to work with earphones
listening to their own music. This enables staff to drown out interruptive
noise of a busy open plan office, or provides them the ability to relax and
concentrate with their own style of peaceful calming sounds.
Mental health awareness is an accepted factor which needs to be considered
in every workplace. Mental Health First Aid now becoming an important
and popular course, with many foundations offering mental health first aid
alongside the traditional first aid course. Great steps to acknowledge that a
bandage and aid comes in many forms, not just the physical.
This journal’s special feature pages showcase some aspects of workplace
health, with editorials, articles and promotions highlighting what is available,
what can be achieved with thought and consideration, often without any
change or impact on budget. We hope you enjoy, learn something new and
take some inspiration.

Many of us have some awareness of the
risks to health of spending all day seated at
a desk, but what about the other downsides
of a sedentary working life?
Some employers have an - unfounded –
fear that staff who use a device such as
an adjustable sit-stand desk, desk bike or
treadmill in the office will be more distracted
and therefore less productive. Some workers
worry that it will make it more difficult to do
their job.
From an employer’s point of view, concerns
that an active workforce is a distracted
workforce are far from correct. Incorporating a
variety of solutions in the office, such as desk
bikes, standing desks and treadmills, is among
the best ways of improving outputs.

In practice, however, choosing the correct
active solution for your workstyle and office is
proven to actually increase productivity. In part,
this is because incorporating the movement
habit into your working life helps maintain focus
and boost creativity. It also makes you less
likely to suffer from the post-lunch ‘slump’ and
aids concentration.
US researchers have found that desk bike
users benefit from reduced stress and activity
levels, as well as increased morale and
motivation.
Other studies show that people who maintain
activity throughout the working day, for
example by switching between a sitting and
standing position at their workstation, are in
fact more productive and experience improved
memory performance.
Long-term active working habits can help
prevent or improve conditions such as obesity,
Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart
conditions, restless leg syndrome and even
certain cancers.
