The Playboy Clubs were, in today`s

category that spoke to him.
business terms, an uncanny triumph
of branding and leveraging. Nobody
starts a magazine with the intention
of going into the nightclub business.
Hugh certainly hadn`t. In 1953 he was
a 27-year old former Esquire copy
writer toiling away at a magazine in the
kitchen of his Chicago home. He saw a
vacuum on the newsstands; there was
nothing in the general-interest men`s
Hefner`s statement in the first issue read, in
part: „We like our apartment. We enjoy mixing
up cocktails and an hors d’oeuvre or
two, putting a little mood music on the phonograph,
and inviting in a female acquaintance
for a quiet discussion on Picasso.
Nietzsche, jazz, sex.“ Playboy eschewed both the he-man
tales in magazines like Argosy and Man’s Adventure and
the full-on prurience of Titter and Adam. Playboy was a
magazine for aspiring urban sophisticates. The Playboy
Clubs would aspire to be the ultimate urban refuge; the
spaces inside, with names like the Living Room and the Library,
suggested that this was man’s home away from home,
the dream town house he himself would want to live in.
In the late 1950s, both Hefner and Lownes were freshly
divorced and looking for a good time. They were kindred
spirits, each highly intelligent and prodigiously
successful with women—Lowners at the time even more
so than Hefner in the latter category. Their differences
were significant: Lownes was an extrovert, a larger-
-than-life character born to a life of privilege; Hefner was an
intellectual, albeit an introverted one. Each man envied traits
in the other.

When they left their beloved apartments, it wasn’t to go
climb a mountain; it was to go to a nightclub and mingle
with interesting people like themselves. Chicago
supper clubs like the Black Orchid, the Cloisters, and
Chez Paree offered live jazz, stand-up comedy, and
of course upscale food and drink. The Gaslight Club
was particularly interesting for its Gay Nineties shtick that included waitresses
dressed as showgirls in corseted, frilly one-piece costumes with fishnet stockings.
The waitresses would also perform song-and-dance numbers. This
was pure male whimsy. Hefner and Lownes had often speculated that they ought
to open a club of their own and discussed what such a club would be like.
Two things happened in 1959 that gave Hefner and Lownes confidence
that their idea might actually work. One was that Playboy published
an article on Chicago’s nightlife that elicited a tremendous response
from readers. As bad happened nummerous times, the interests of Hefner
had resonated strongly with Playboy’s entire audience. The other
event was the first Playboy Jazz Festival. Hefner had wanted to put
on a jazz event for some time, but it took Lownes to make it happen—and he
made it happen big. Held in Chicago Stadium on August 7-9, the festival featured
the best jazz artists oft he day: Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington,
Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and many
others. The event was a popular success, and what’s more, it demonstrated another
side of Playboy magazine to those who, as Lownes the describe them at
the time, „judge it merely by the Centerfold.“ Lessons learned: Readers wanted
club of their own, and the rabbit logo could sell more than magazines and sex.
Lownes and Hefner turned to Chicago restaurateur Arnold Morton to
help them realize their dream. Morton found a space not far off Rush
Street, the nexus of Chicago nightlife, at 116 East Walton Street, the
former Colony Club. The old Club was renovated with modern furnishings
of teak and leather, and Morton set to work hiring and
training the restaurant staff. Morton decided that everything—food,
drink, a pack of cigarettes—would cost the same price: $1.50. At that price,
the club would just break even on the food but see a sizeable return on drinks.
The original Playboy Club in Chicago became the template for future
Playboy Clubs. Its exterior, particularly the Mondrian inspired entryway
that jutted out into sidewalk, was eye catching and modern.
Upon entering, members arrived in a lobby with a coat-check room
and a sign in desk: a board on the wall above the desk displayed the
names of all keyholders in the club at a given time. (Club members
were known as keyholders, in the tradition of the old Gaslight Club.) Down a
short flight of stairs was the Playmate Bar, decorated with reproductions of magazine
Centerfolds illuminated from behind. Up one flight of stairs from the lobby
was the Living Room—a piano bar with a buffet. The next flight up was the Library,
a short-lived performance space, which from the outset attracted impressive
names for two- or three week runs. „The very first performer we had, as a
performer, was Mabel Mercer,“ says Hugh’s brother Keith Hefner, who would
become an important part of the Playboy Clubs team. „ The second was Bobby
Short, and the third was Burns and Carlin—as in Jack Burns and George Carlin.“

There were two more floors above
the Library that went unused
at the club’s opening. In time
the Library was renamed the
VIP Room (which stands for
Very Important Playboys) and
was for what Lownes describes as „fine
dining“ (i.e., not the unbeatable buck- and
a half deal), the floor above it opened
as the Penthouse, and the top floor opened
as the Playroom. On most nights the
Penthouse and the Playroom would catch
host a comedian and a couple of musical
acts. The Centerfolds in the Playmate Bar
weren’t the only décor straight out of the
magazine: reproductions of cartoons and
impressionist works by Playboy’s house
artist LeRoy Neiman adorned the walls.
The Chicago club opened in February
29, 1960, and was an
unqualified success. People lined
up around the block to get
in. Within the first year, more
than fifty thousand men had
paid the $25 initiation fee to become was
conquered—and the world awaited.
