Rates are based on a vessel staying and payingfor the berth for a consecutive number of days as indicated. Catamarans are charged at 1.5* the advertised rates. A depositof 10% of the value of the booking (Min US$100) is required to secure a berth. Deposits are only refundable up to 30 days priorto the booked arrival date. Berths will not be held for vessels not paying a deposit within 7 days of a quotation being issued.Invoicing will commence from the booked arrival date unless 7 days’ notice is received of a delay in arrival. Iwas very excited to be headed back to Port Antonio,one of my favorite places in Jamaica. I’d sailedthere the first time from Aruba in 2013, aboard myElizabethan 31 sloop, Sonic Boom, and discovered thatit was a beautiful laid-back coastal town with the spectacularBlue Mountains in the background.Port Antonio, Jamaicaby Paul Sutcliffeand calm harbor, I saw a huge classic yacht on thedock. It looked very similar to Flynn’s yacht Zaca. Infact it was S/V Germania, a replica of a 1908 classic.Still, it added to the magic feeling of going back in timeto the 1930s and Errol Flynn’s glamorous life.At the marina, there is a café next to a pool overlookingthe harbor, a great place for lunch. A path leadsfrom there to a beach. The marina is very “pirate” —there are old cannons and huge old anchors dottedaround the grounds. It felt like being in a scene from oneof Errol Flynn’s films set in the age of galleons andpirates, films like Captain Blood and In the Wake of theDESTINATIONSWIKIPEDIAThe town has a slightly run-down, “back in time”feel. It was once a British colonial naval base, and thenin the late 19th century it was a banana exportingport. Now it is under special government protectionfrom over-development. People didn’t want Port Antonioto change, and it seems like it hasn’t much.While I had spent the previous month sailing eastalong Jamaica’s north coast, hopping from bay to bayaboard, I’d been reading the wonderful novel ThePirate’s Daughter by Margaret Cezair-Thompson, whichcaptures Errol Flynn’s life in Jamaica through the eyesof a local girl in a nation struggling with its own independence.I was now headed to Errol Flynn Marina,from where I would leave Jamaica to go to Haiti.In 1946 Flynn was washed ashore in his luxuryyacht Zaca by a storm near Port Antonio. A rich, handsome,womanizing movie star, he fell in love with theplace and bought Navy Island, the small island in PortAntonio’s harbor, although according to Flynn he wonit in a rum-fuelled game of poker.For Flynn, Jamaica was an escape from the pressuresof Hollywood, where he was now a big star, andfrom the fallout from various incidents and scandalsinvolving drink and women. He moved to Port Antonioin 1950, where he lived on Zaca, a classic 118-footschooner built in 1930, moored off Navy Island.Port Antonio is actually two harbors, East Harborand West Harbor. The entrance is via East Harbor andthen you pass Navy Island on the starboard side, followingthe markers into West Harbor. Although he always played the good guy in themovies, I think Flynn saw himself as a pirate. Heclaimed that his mother was descended from a mutineeron the Bounty, and that his ancestors were sailors.In town, a few minutes walk from the marina, there’san excellent fruit and veg market, shops selling tastyJamaican patties, and along the waterfront a terrificice cream parlor. At night bars pump out reggae androck steady. The local captain of a powerboat in themarina whom I’d made friends with took me to a nightclubwhere local DJs played mashed-up dance hall.There are lots of interesting day trips from PortAntonio. You can go to coffee plantations high in theBlue Mountains, or travel just a few miles along thecoast to Blue Lagoon. I went with a guide I’d met at themarina to Reich Waterfalls. A taxi took us through thecountryside and up into the mountains. We trekkedthrough some rainforest and arrived at a large calmpool. We jumped in and cooled off. There was a waterfallleading into another deep pool below us. Wejumped into that pool, and swam to the edge wherethere was another waterfall, leading into anotherslightly smaller pool below. We did this five times,swimming through pools and jumping down waterfallsworking our way back down the mountain where wemet the taxi again and went back to Port Antonio.Later I stocked up on supplies at the markets anddid laundry back at the marina. The next day I clearedout with Customs and Immigration, who came to themarina. Eventually I headed out of Errol Flynn Marinaand Port Antonio, and with a fair wind made for Haiti.I was sad to be leaving Jamaica.My advice to cruisers is not to feel that Port Antoniois just a convenient port of entry, and be quickly onyour way.
