REFLECTIONS ON
ASID 2019 CONFERENCE
It was really positive to note the
continuation of the engagement of selfadvocates
in the ASID Conference.
The self-advocates wrap up forum was
again a great ending session. There
were some great key notes especially
the presentation by Shu and Tim on
the health campaign and the important
role self-advocates play in pushing
agendas of people with intellectual
disability forward. The enthusiasm at
the Royal Commission forum for ASID
to join with other players to seek to
inform the Royal Commission final
reports and recommendations was
encouraging.
In the future organisers could find
music that relates to the theme of the
conference and integrate this into
proceedings, as music produces a
positive energy. To be truly inclusive
the associated activities, such as the
Chill Out Space and the photo booth,
must be visible. A further challenge for
future conferences is to encourage all
presenters to make their presentations
as accessible as possible.
