January 2020 Franklin Local Town Pages www.localtownpages.com Page 7Franklin Police Awarded Grant toReduce Impaired DrivingThe Franklin Police wereawarded a grant from the ExecutiveOffice of Public Safety andSecurity’s (EOPSS) Office ofGrants and Research (OGR) toincrease the number of impaireddriving patrols this past holidayseason. Franklin Police joinedother departments across thestate and the State Police in thenational Drive Sober or Get PulledOver (DSOGPO) enforcement mobilization.“Impaired drivers are a risk toeveryone on the road. Both theoperator as a risk to themselves,and every other person travelingthe roadways” said ChiefThomas J. Lynch of the FranklinPolice Department. “Thesegrants allow us to increase thenumber of targeted patrols onthe streets looking for impaireddrivers and making it safer foreveryone.”“Arranging for a sober ridehome before celebrating shouldbe a part of everyone’s plans (inthe) holiday season,” said JeffLarason, Director of HighwaySafety at Executive Office ofPublic Safety and Security, Officeof Grants & Research. “Wewant all drivers to recognizethe responsibility they have todrive safely and to avoid gettingbehind the wheel if they’re impaired.Remember - If you feeldifferent, you drive different.”Massachusetts Data(2013-2017):• Marijuana was the mostprevalent drug found in driversinvolved in fatal crashes.(Note: a link between marijuanameasurement andimpairment in these drivershas been questioned,as marijuana metabolitescan remain in the blood forweeks after use.)• 11 percent of drivers involvedin fatal crashes werefound with both alcohol anddrugs in their system.• 78 percent of impaired driversin fatal crashes were men.• 35 percent of drunk driversinvolved in a fatal crash were21-29 years old.• The number of drivers involvedin a fatal crash whowere alcohol-impaired (BAC.08+) and had drugs in theirsystem increased by 63 percent(35 to 57).• From 2016 to 2017, alcoholimpaireddriving fatalitiesdecreased by 19 percent (148to 120).National Data from theNational Highway TrafficSafety Administration:• Approximately one-thirdof all traffic crash fatalitiesin the United States involvedrunk drivers. On average,more than 10,000 peoplehave died each year (2013to 2017) in drunk-drivingcrashes. To put it in perspective,that’s equal to about 20jumbo jets crashing eachyear, with no survivors.• In 2017, one person waskilled every 48 minutes by adrunk driver on our nation’sroads.• In 2017, almost one in fivechildren (14 and younger)killed in traffic crashes werekilled in drunk-drivingcrashes.
