KAREN FOSTERScience TeacherKaren Foster grew up in Beaumont, Texas, andmoved to Houston for her first teaching job atSt. Mark’s Episcopal School. She receivedher Bachelor of Education from TexasA&M University and a Master ofEducation from the University ofHouston. She’s taught anatomyand physiology as well as biologyfor the past 30 years. Foster hasserved on many committeesand is currently co-directorof the mentoring program,which supports new teachersduring their first two years atEHS. She and her husband,Pat Foster, have been marriedfor 30 years and have twochildren: Kimberly, EHS Classof 2010, and Kyle, EHS Class of2014.What’s on your playlist?On my “high school” playlist Ihave America, Boz Scaggs, andthe Eagles. And of course ongame day – the Aggie Band!What was the first concert youattended?I saw the Commodores inBeaumont, Texas, at theMontagne Center.If you weren’t a teacher, whatwould you pick for a career?I would be a physical therapist,but my dream career would be aprofessional tennis player.What is your proudestaccomplishment?I am most proud when formerstudents reach out to me to tellme something about themselvesor something they rememberfrom my class. If I have madean impact on a student I feel asense of accomplishment andknow that learning has takenplace beyond just the subject.Doyouhave afavorite app ortech gadget?Alexa – I love the question of theday.Did you have a mentorgrowing up who inspired yourcareer?My parents were probably mybiggest supporters. They taughtme the value of hard work andgiving back to others.If you could travel back intime, what period of historywould you choose?I would go back to the 1930s.In 1939 A&M won the NationalFootball Championship, and itmight never happen again.What do you most respectabout your colleagues?My colleagues are life-longlearners and continue to strivefor excellence in all they do forour students, not only in theclassroom but with time spentwith extracurricular activities.What do you most respectabout your students?Their genuine gratefulness andkindness. Even on days whenthey are feeling exhausted, theysay thank you when leaving theclassroom.Read any good booksrecently?“Where the Crawdads Sing.”If you could eat only one mealthis week, what would it be?Chips and queso.31
