We are proud to continue as a sponsor of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of
Champions in 2020. J.P. Morgan believes in conducting first-class business
in a first-class way, and in collaboration with ToC, this tournament is truly an
extraordinary partnership.
We are pleased to invest in the squash stars of the future through the
tournament’s support of two outstanding youth programs, StreetSquash and
CitySquash. StreetSquash is a Harlem-based, after-school youth enrichment
program that combines academic tutoring, squash instruction, college
preparation and mentoring. CitySquash, based in the Bronx at Fordham
University, helps students achieve their academic, athletic and personal
goals through squash from elementary school through college graduation.
Students of both programs are invited to the squash tournament and many
of them volunteer to be part of the event. A select number of students from
these programs are nominated for the prestigious opportunity to participate
in a clinic with the pros.
We hope you join us to raise a racquet during this exciting week of
matches in one of the most beautiful arenas in the world. We are glad to
carry on this great New York tradition as this event celebrates its 23rd year
in Grand Central Terminal TM !
The kind of squash
New York eats up.
We’re honored to support the
J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions.

During the fall, I regularly asked my team, “What’s new about this year’s ToC?
What will the audience remember? What will they think is special
about 2020?”
Once again, we’ll have all the world’s best players here, including three-time
champion Nour El Sherbini, who will take her shot at tying the incomparable
Jonathon Power with four ToC titles in the event’s modern era. Mohamed
Elshorbagy, one of the true gentlemen of squash, will be going for title No. 3,
potentially leveling him with superstars Peter Nicol and Ramy Ashour. We
are thrilled to welcome Greg Gaultier back to center court after his forced
absence due to injury and surgery, and we will wave the stars and stripes when
Amanda Sobhy mounts her effort to become the first American to win the title
since 1992. The RAM Challenge, and the privilege of having both Ramy Ashour
and Nick Matthew back at ToC, will be a major highlight of the week.
But what’s new? We’ve pretty much settled on the right set up for the arena.
We can’t jam in any more seats or many more lights, speakers or screens.
We’re up to 28 sessions of play and we expect to welcome a record of more
than 13,000 ticketed spectators; tens of thousands more will watch for free by
the front wall. We also have some of the finest and longest-serving sponsors
— J.P. Morgan, Lexington Partners, NBCUniversal and Dunlop, to name four —
that any annual sporting event could hope to have.
I got my answer a few weeks ago when I heard a disk jockey on the radio ask
Bruce Springsteen the same question. “How do you still bring energy and
meaning to performing a hit from ’75?” he was asked “You must have played
Born to Run 5,000 times.”
The grizzled rocker with the black leather jacket and a white Fender Telecaster
slung over his back responded, “You got a dog?”
“No.”
“Well, I got a dog. I take that dog for a walk around the block twice a day when
I’m home, and I got a big block. It don’t matter if it’s rainin’ or hotter than
Hades. It don’t matter if we go at sunrise or in the dead of night. Me and my
dog love to go around the block.”
Sometimes it’s not what’s new. Sometimes the joy is in the work itself, in
hearing the audience cheer, stomp and whistle, while you play that song the
best you can. That’s what we’ll be doing this year, we’ll run the 2020
J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions the best we can.

RAM Scoring Graduates to Grand Central
Written by Rob Dinerman
The inaugural Ramy Ashour Invitational, held on the afternoon and
early evening of May 19, 2019 at the City View Racquet Club in Long
Island City and headlined by the unveiling and competitive debut of
the revolutionary RAM scoring system, was an unqualified success.
The brainchild of Ashour himself, who recently retired from the PSA
pro squash circuit after a glittering career highlighted by one British
Open, three Tournament of Champions crowns and three World
Open championships, and co-founder (and 2017 Intercollegiate
Individuals winner) Osama Khalifa, the RAM system features the
introduction of a three-minute time clock for each game, with the
clock only running while the points are being played, then stopping
until the serve begins the next point. When an exchange ends in
a let call, the time that that exchange expended is put back on the
clock. Further, any point that lasts longer than sixty seconds will be
stopped, the time put back on the clock and the point replayed. The
time clock is placed right at the front-wall tin (or on surrounding
video screens), enabling both players as well as the spectators to see
how much time is left before the time expires.
An important added element in the scoring is that if one player is
ahead when time has run out, in order to clinch the game he/she still
has to win one more point before the trailing player is able to tie the
score. Therefore, no matter how big a deficit the trailing player faces
when the three minutes runs out, he/she still has a chance to win the
game by scoring enough consecutive points to tie the score, thereby
creating a sudden-death situation in which whoever wins the next
point wins the game. Matches played under the aegis of the
RAM system, as is the case with all current official tournament play,
are best three out of five games.
Presented to an intrigued and full gallery at City View Racquet
Club, the inaugural Ramy Ashour Invitational consisted of a wildly
entertaining exhibition between Ramy Ashour and his elder brother
and former World No. 11 Hisham Ashour, followed by a 4-player
mini-tournament. The field consisted of a pair of PSA veterans,
namely former PSA No. 9 Laurens Jan Anjema and six-time Swedish
national champion Rasmus Hult, and a pair of top-tier collegians in
Ashley Davies (University of Rochester) and Spencer Lovejoy (Yale).
Anjema defeated Hult for the championship.
One noteworthy consideration of the entire experience is the fact
that Ashour, Khalifa and Co., with this first highly praiseworthy
RAM scoring system event now under their belt, plan to build on the
momentum they have generated. The match play at the CitySquash
debut was noticeably more dynamic with the scoring system they
are introducing, and it was clear that the players were aware of the
dwindling time remaining as the seconds ticked down at the end of
each game, with some of the best action occurring after time had
expired as players attempted, in at least one case successfully, to
rescue games from the brink.
The next step is this week’s debut of the RAM Champions Challenge
at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions on the glass court in
Grand Central Terminal between Ashour himself and fellow World
Champion Nick Matthew of England. It is exceedingly rare, perhaps
even unprecedented, for a pro event to have been trialed with a new
scoring system, and of course in this case, the impact is that much
greater with a revered figure like Ramy Ashour at the helm. Everyone
will savor the intriguing possibilities that await.
Ram scoring rules :
(1) Each game consists of a timed three-minute regulation period,
followed by one final point for an un-timed overtime period.
(2) Matches are the best of five games (i.e. the first player to win
three games thereby wins the match), with a two-minute break
between games.
(3) There must be a timekeeper and a referee for each match.
(4) During the three-minute regulation period:
(4.1) The clock only runs while a point is being played, And the clock
stops when the point ends and doesn’t restart until the server
serves to begin the next point.
(4.2) When a point ends in a let, the “Time Revert rule” applies,
whereby the time expended during the rally is put back
on the clock.
(4.3) No official point can last more than one minute. If a point lasts
more than one minute, the Time Revert rule is implemented,
with clock resetting to when the point first started and the
point being replayed.
(4.4) In the event of a player asking for a let ball on the 3:00 mins
mark, the score stays the same and one final point shall
be played.
(5) When the three minutes expire and the overtime begins:
(5.1) The player who is ahead in score still needs to win one more
final point to win the game.
(5.2) in the event of a tie in the score, a sudden death point
will be played.
(5.3) for example, if Player A is ahead 8-5 after the three minutes
have expired, Player A still has to win a ninth point to win the
game. If Player B wins the next three points to tie the score
at 8-all, a “Sudden Death” rule is in effect, whereby whichever
player wins the 8-all point thereby wins the game 9-8.
All other PSA (Professional Squash Association) and WSF (World
Squash Federation) rules apply.

BRO
THREE STEPS TO TAKE
TO PREVENT INJURY IN SQUASH
Squash is an exhilarating and demanding
sport. Though fun to play, the sport’s
intensity can be taxing on the body. As
Physical Therapists, we hope to enable you
to perform at your highest potential, and
help keep you injury-free. One of the most
important ways to prevent injury is to make
sure you are taking care of your body and
allowing yourself to adapt to the amount of
playing you are doing.
Here are three tips to help keep your body injury-free and
get the most out of your squash playing:
1. Warm Up Dynamically Before You Hit the Court!
Most of us don’t like to warm up before we play. However, research has
shown that a dynamic warm-up is most effective in improving quadriceps
strength, hamstring flexibility, and even vertical jumping ability. What is a
dynamic warm-up? It is a series of sport-specific movements that prepare
the muscles for performance. Some examples of exercises you can do
include Frankensteins, lunges with a twist, heel walking, and toe walking.
2. Stretch After You Play!Stretching is important.
It increases muscle flexibility and range of motion, signals your body to
relax, and just feels great! When you don’t stretch, your muscles can
tighten up, stress your joints and change the way you move. Now, you
shouldn’t stretch right before you play, but you should stretch daily!
Most of us know some easy hamstring and quadriceps stretches to do,
but incorporating a few other stretches can also be helpful in keeping
you loose. Try out a hip flexor stretch, pigeon stretch, and a Figure Four
piriformis stretch after your next session on the court.
3. Cross Train!
It is always important to vary the type of exercise you do. Any single type
of exercise will overuse some muscles, and underuse others. To ensure that
those differences don’t lead to injury, it’s a good idea to supplement your
main type of exercise. That could mean anything from playing basketball, to
practicing Pilates or yoga, to weightlifting. Performing single leg exercises
can help to increase the strength and stability of your legs to help prevent
injury. Try out a Bulgarian split squat, single leg Romanian deadlift, reverse
lunge to single leg hop, or skater jumps the next time you train to help
supplement your squash playing.
Try implementing these pointers in your squash playing routine for optimal
performance and injury prevention!

ALI
FARAG
A 2014 graduate of Harvard University with a degree in mechanical
engineering, Egyptian Ali Farag has quickly transitioned from emerging
talent to, arguably, the best player on the PSA World Tour. The tall, angular
star finalized his assault on the top ranking by winning the 2019 J.P. Morgan
Tournament of Champions in January and seeing his ranking point total vault
him to No. 1 in the world.
Farag continued his claim to No. 1 throughout the rest of the 2019-20 PSA
season. He earned his first World Championship title in Chicago in March
and then rolled to victories the DPD Open in the Netherlands, the top tier El
Gouna International in Egypt, and the U.S. Open in Philadelphia. His rivalry with
former No. 1 Mohamed Elshorbagy framed most of the drama in the past year.
A nimble and graceful player, Farag moves with the type of ease last seen in the
great Jansher Khan, while he possesses a quiet aggressive streak that fuels a
deep inner fire to be the best in the sport. His 2016 marriage to Women’s star
Nour El Tayeb seems only to have enhanced both of their careers.
As a sign of his respect among his peers, the 28-year-old Farag was elected by
his peers in 2018 as the Men’s Player President of the PSA.

Known as “The Beast,” ElShorbagy’s hard hitting and remarkable
physicality make him a tour de force when in full flow and a
player who has the ability to destroy even the very best of
opponents. However, The Beast seems to have met his match
in the angular precision of Ali Farag. The two now dominate
the typical top-level finals, with the exception of the dynamic
win by Tarek Momen in last year’s World Championship,
and their battles are enthralling. Farag won the bulk of their
encounters last year, but Elshorbagy took the title at both the
ultra prestigious 2019 British Open and the 2019 China Open in
Shanghai.
First earning the World No. 1 spot in November of 2014, the
29-year-old English-based Egyptian recorded that honor 40
times in the last 62 months.
ElShorbagy’s dominance in 2018 included PSA Platinum-level
wins at the Windy City Open in Chicago, the U.S. Open in
Philadelphia and the Hong Kong Open, making him the top
prize money winner on Tour in the 2018-19 season. Mohamed’s
younger brother Marwan is also a consistent “top 8” level
threat, making the ElShorbagy brothers one of the most
competitive siblings in sport in the world.

NO.1
Raneem El Welily brought an end to Nicol David’s legendary 13-year
dominance of the women’s squash rankings in September 2015,
becoming the first Egyptian woman in history to be ranked World No.1
in any sport.
El Welily enjoyed a thrilling 2018 campaign, winning major titles at El
Gouna International, the China Open in Shanghai and Philadelphia’s
U.S. Open and reaching the finals in Hong Kong and San Francisco.
Her success boosted her back to No. 1, a pinnacle she first achieved in
2015. Her 2019 results were equally glittering. The charismatic star,
who once gave a TED Talk in Cairo, won the Black Ball Open in Cairo
and the DPD Open in the Netherlands, defended her titles at El Gouna
and Shanghai, took the next step to win San Francisco and finished No.
1 at the season-ending World Tour Finals. She was runner up in the
2019 World Championship to rival Nour ElSherbini, who is also her
teammate on the multi-Gold Medal winning Egyptian National Team.
Her personal interest in jigsaw puzzles translates well for squash match
tactics, while her two-year marriage to PSA men’s star Tarek Momen
ensures good company as the pair travel the PSA World
Tour together.

Most recently, El Sherbini won the 2018/2019 World Championship
in March in Chicago and then doubled down to win the 2019 World
Championship at the iconic glass court at the foot of the Great
Pyramids of Giza in November.
El Sherbini’s major Pro Tour breakthrough came in 2016, with a maiden
World Series Platinum title in January’s J.P. Morgan Tournament of
Champions. She then became the first female Egyptian to win the iconic
British Open crown just two months later. Even greater things awaited
in April, when the Alexandria-born El Sherbini became the youngest
World Champion of all time, becoming the first Egyptian to win the
pinnacle tournament on the Women’s Tour in the process.
In May 2016 she became the second youngest female ever to reach the
World No. 1 spot. She went on to win her second PSA Women’s World
Championship title later that year at the age of just 21, defeating rival
Raneem El Welily in the final on home soil at El Gouna on the Red Sea.
In 2018, “The Warrior Princess” won the British Open again and took
the season ending honors at the ATCO World Tour Finals in Dubai to
end the year at No. 2, a position she defended throughout 2019.

KARIM ABDEL
GAWAD
Quiet Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad has undergone a metamorphosis
over the past five years, transforming from a bit part player on the
fringes of the World’s Top 10 to a genuine champion.
The soft spoken right hander plays in a relaxed and languid manner,
which enables him to make the game look effortless — an ability that
has him compared to the legendary four-time World Champion Amr
Shabana.
Nicknamed the “Baby-faced Assassin,” the 27-year-old Cairo
resident reached World No. 1 in May 2017 after winning his first
World Open title in the fall of 2016. This was followed by wins at
the 2016 Qatar Classic in November and the 2017 J.P. Morgan
Tournament of Champions in January. Gawad had a quiet 2017-
18 season, winning only a mid-level event in Houston, but recent
stellar results as Champion of the $53,000 Pakistan Open and the
$165,000 PSA Platinum Black Ball Open in his hometown of Cairo
have propelled him to world No. 5 and make him a serious contender
for his second ToC title.

TAREK

Many successful athletes stare at the backside of victory, some for their
whole career. Tarek Momen reached his 30s compiling such a record, despite
rising into the top 10. In the fall of 2019 he won the World Championship,
the most defining, important and valuable title in the sport.
With a degree in Electronic Engineering, Tarek Momen is one of the
most highly educated players on the Tour, and his dramatic victory in
Qatar cements his stature as a challenger at every turn to both Farag
and Elshorbagy. His past year also saw success as the winner of the CCI
International in Mumbai, as well as many strong runner-up and semifinal
finishes.
Known as “The Viper,” Momen is blessed with explosive movement. At the
same time, his subtle skills and delicate touch make him stand him out as one

unique striking of the ball and canny court sense rank him near the top of

Her 2019 results were the strongest of her young career and propelled her
to a best-ever world ranking of No. 2 in November, while her December
ranking of No. 3 sees her positioned in the 2020 J.P. Morgan Tournament of
Champions as the third seed. Her 2019 victories at two of the most
important events on Tour, the British Open and U.S. Open, moved her out of
the shadows of fellow Egyptians Raneem El Welily and Nour El Sherbini and
into her own spotlight.
Gohar won the World Junior Championships in 2015 and 2016, doubling

splendid breakout season was rounded off with a debut appearance at the

On the PSA World Tour, she has labored in the shadows of the late stage

US Open in Philadelphia, when the newly married daughter of a Cairo
professor joined husband Ali Farag on the podium to accept their amazing
twin gold medals and trophies for winning their respective divisions in one
of the Tour’s most prestigious Majors.
The outgoing and engaging Cairene enjoyed a very strong 2019 campaign

Paul Coll is the Superman of Squash, as defined by his characteristic dives and

The dynamic Kiwi won the $100,000 Canary Wharf Classic, beating Tarek Momen

the Platinum level British Open and the Egyptian Open, a string of results he has

A professional player since 2011, Coll earned a handful of smaller titles in his early

former World No.1 James Willstrop during the 2016 Canary Wharf Classic, Coll

Coll’s breakthrough moment came later in 2016 at December’s $100,000

qualification to snare his first PSA Gold title — upsetting such established top

Simon Rösner, the most successful German player ever, made history in
January 2018 by becoming the first German ever to win a World Tour

Champions in New York. The victory was the biggest of the friendly giant’s
career and has augured in a new level of PSA World Tour success. While he
enjoyed a series of solid Quarterfinal results through the first half of 2018,
Rösner notched two successive Runner Up finishes in the Fall at the U.S.

Welshwoman on the PSA World Tour. The gregarious and energetic Taff became
the first Welsh player to land the prestigious British National Championship
when she beat Alison Waters in the final in Manchester last season. Evans is the
first Welsh player to lift the title (male or female). Evans defended her British
National title in 2019.
The twenty-seven year old won her first PSA Tour Tour title in May of 2015
powering past four local favorite Egyptians to capture the Sharm El Sheikh
International crown. That victory catapulted the Welsh star into the world’s top
30 and on to a pathway that sees her as World No. 9 today.
Her best result to date on the World Tour came in October 2018 when she
reached the semifinals of the $150,000 Platinum-level US Open in Philadelphia.
This past year her highlights included reaching the finals respectively of the
$51,000 Cleveland Open and $76,000 Manchester Open.
Evans competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and claimed her maiden
Commonwealth Games medal after stunning defending Commonwealth Games
champion Nicol David of Malaysia in the bronze medal match of the women’s
singles event. This medal was also the first Commonwealth Games medal
earned by Wales in squash in 20 years.

HANIA
EL HAMMAMY
Relative Tour newcomer Hania El Hammamy is definitely on
her way up. She became the first player born this century to
win a PSA Tour title, which came at the 42nd Geneva Open in
March 2015 with a shock win over Fiona Moverley in the final,
but has really made her mark this year.
After a series of 2nd round and quarterfinal successes, the
19-year-old reached the semis respectively of the 2019 China
Open and 2019 French Open at Nantes before surprising the
field to reach the semifinals of the 2019 World Open on home
soil in front of the Great Pyramids of Giza. That stellar result in
the world’s most important championship propelled her from
No. 15 to No. 10 in the world.
Hania’s interests include music and traveling.

SQUASH PRIMER
FRONT WALL
Hitting the ball on, or above, the line is “out”– as is
the ceiling.
SERVICE LINE
Serves must be above this line – hitting on, or below, the line is “down.”
THE TIN
is 17” high from the floor on the front wall – all shots must be above the tin.
BACK WALL
The “out” line is seven feet high.
SERVICE LINES
define the two “service areas” – when serving, the ball must go into the opposite
service area.
SERVICE BOX
The player must have at least one foot in the service box
when serving.
ATTACKING SHOTS
are usually hit to the front corners of the court.
KEEPING THE BALL TIGHT TO THE SIDE WALL
usually forces an opponent to hit a defensive shot and may produce a “loose” ball
which creates an opportunity for a player to hit an attacking shot.
CONTROL THE “T”
to be in the best position to “get” balls on either side
of the court and to hit attacking shots on balls hit away
from the side walls.
KEEP THE BALL DEEP
to force opponents to hit defensive shots and create opportunities to hit attacking
shots to the front court.
RULES OF THE GAME
• We use a two-official system. The Center Referee calls the score and
keeps the official written record of the points and match time. The Center
Referee’s voice is the one you hear during the match. The other referee is
the Video Referee who reviews video footage of the relevant play upon appeal
by a player of the Center Referee’s call.
• The matches are best of five games (i.e., first player to win three games).
The first player to score 11 points wins the game, unless the score is tied at
10-all – in which case, play continues until one of the players earns a two
point lead to win the game.
• A player serves until he or she loses a point. The receiver then becomes
the server and has the choice of side from which to begin serving – then
alternates sides for each subsequent serve until losing a point. A player gets
only one serve on each point – a service fault is a lost point.
THE SQUASH RACQUET
• The squash racquet is the same length as the average tennis racquet, but
weighs just a little more than a badminton racquet.
THE SQUASH BALL
• The squash ball is soft and it bounces far less than a tennis ball.
DURATION OF POINTS
• As the level of play improves, so does the average length of each point in
matches between players of equal or near equal ability.
• After hitting the ball, the player MUST make his or her best effort to get
out of the opponent’s way.
• On each shot the ball can hit any number of walls, but MUST hit the front
wall once, MUST stay within the court boundaries (marked near the top of
the walls) and MUST NOT hit the tin. The ball can bounce ONLY ONCE on
the floor.
• A Let is awarded when the opponent is in the way of a player’s path to the
ball. It means the point will be played over again.
• A Stroke is awarded to a player who had a winning opportunity but was
prevented by the opponent from playing the shot.
• The Referees will rule No Let if they think the player could not have gotten
to the ball before it bounced twice.
• A player may appeal a ruling. The Video Referee makes the final decision.
