(DailyExpress, January 2018).A whopping 20 million Brits claim they aresleep deprived by their partner’s snoring,reported The Sun in 2017.Snoring is often thought of as funny, yetthis could not be farther from the truth.Usually, the partner suffers the most.Sleeping on the sofa or in the spare roomevery night takes its toll, with ruinedrelationships and broken marriages.So what causes snoring? Is it bad for ourhealth? What can be done about it?What Causes Snoring?Snoring is caused by something partiallyblocking your airways. The airways includeyour mouth and the back of your throat.While you are asleep, and when youbreathe in deeply, this blockage causes thatnoisy reverberation we all know so well asa snore.What causes blocked airways? The culpritsare our common vices. Smoking causes anexcess of mucus/catarrh, alcohol causesthe muscles and tissues of the palate toover-relax and sag, and fat, in people whoare overweight or obese when pads offatty tissue accumulate in these areas andliterally wobble in the breeze!Allergies also play a part. Commonallergens include house dust mite, animaldander, pollens, yeasts and moulds.Inhalation of allergens causes nasal andthroat tissues to swell and the productionof body secretions.Typically, a snorer liesflat on their back andbreathes through theirmouth. When you lieon your back, yourtongue falls to the backof your mouth, partiallyblocking your airway. Inaddition, when you takea breath in throughyour mouth, a forcefulwall of air hits the roofof your mouth and isfunnelled through yournarrowed airway.Lying on your side and breathing throughyour nose make snoring less likely.Sleep ApnoeaSnoring is only dangerous to health if itcauses "sleep apnoea".In this condition, there is such a severeblockage to airflow that your brain istemporarily starved of oxygen. You brieflystop breathing altogether, your brainrecognises this and after a long pause yourbreathing starts again.The strain on your heart and lungs plus theeffects of constantly feeling tired and poordaily performance can have life-threateningconsequences.75% of people who snore have sleepapnoea.If you think you could have sleep apnoea,you must see your doctor.What Can Be Done To Help Snoring?Making lifestyle changes, howeverdifficult and unpopular, has to be themainstay of long-term treatment. Stoppingsmoking, moderating or stopping drinkingalcohol and losing weight are stronglyrecommended.To reduce the risk of allergy, regularvacuuming, damp dusting, and keepingthe bedroom pet-free will all help.
