He said: “There is a massive onslaught on the environment arising from human activities and companies that have even led to the loss of many lives. Minimum Wage: Obaseki, labour agree on implementation By Gabriel Enogholase BENIN - EDO State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and organized labour in the state , yesterday under the auspices of the Joint Negotiating Council, JNC agreed on the implementation of the new minimum wage . Recall that the governor had in his New Year broadcast, assured public servants that they would be paid the new minimum wage from January 2020. Speaking at the signing of the agreement, Obaseki said that workers in the state would on 26 of January receive bank alerts reflecting the new minimum wage. He said: “There should not be much difference between a state worker, federal government worker and a local government worker because it is the same government. What we have done in Edo is to change the emphasis, by emphasizing productivity. If you want someone to be productive, the minimum you can do is to pay the person a living wage. Every worker must have health insurance cover. Every worker who is eligible must have a mortgage or house of their own and every worker will undertake, at least one training in the public service training academy every year”. Earlier, State Head of Service, HoS, Mr Issac Ehiozuwa, said the new minimum wage was unanimously agreed upon by all parties along with the consequential adjustments. He said this at different towns where he flagged off the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Agbado-Omuo road, Ilupeju-Ire-Igbemo-Ijan road, Oye-Ikun-Otun road and Aramoko- Erijiyan-Ikogosi road in the state. Fayemi appealed to the people of the community where the projects were sited to create an enabling environment for the contractors handling the projects to operate for prompt and timely delivery of the projects. He said: “Permit me to reiterate the resolve of this administration to make all parts of the state accessible by good roads as enshrined under the Infrastructure and Industrial Development pillar of the five cardinal points of this administration. In our quest to restore Ekiti values, the government has continued to pursue lofty goals even in the face of daunting challenges. We are not allowing the paucity of funds to deter us in the execution of our programmes. “The contractors started some of these roads being re-awarded in 2013 during our first term, but could not proceed substantially before my exit. The last administration did little work before being abandoned and that informed why we terminated the contracts and re-awarded them to the original contractors. “If you check critically, all these roads are critical to the economic development of our people. The Ilupeju-Ire - Ijan road will resolve the challenge of moving the Ire Burnt Brick products from the town to other parts of the state and the country at large. “Let me assure you that we won’t allow paucity of funds to deter us from achieving this. We have sourced for funds to solve many of our challenges.” TRAFFIC: Adegboruwa hails Lagos govt on Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge L AGOS—HUMAN rights activist, Mr. Ebun-olu Adegboruwa, SAN, yesterday, commended the Lagos State government for decongesting traffic on Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge. In a statement, Mr. Adegboruwa, however, urged the state government to eradicate any form of toll on the bridge. He said: “I commend the Lagos State Govt and the Lekki Concession Company, for the innovation of electronic payment system on the Lekki- Ikoyi Link Bridge. Predictably, the electronic payment system has reduced traffic congestion substantially. I passed through the bridge today (yesterday) to and fro, all in less than three minutes. The burden of Lekki dwellers has been reduced, whilst we wait to further observe. “However, we should move towards total eradication of any form of tolling at all, as it has been established that the bridge was built with tax payers’ money. Having collected the toll fees for well over a decade now, the government should tell us how much it has so far generated from the toll-fee regime, so that we know where we are. “Furthermore, the roundabout at the landing of the bridge on Admiralty Way should go completely so that proper movement can become easy for Lekki dwellers who don’t intend to use the bridge. “I commend Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his team and the MD of LCC, for the good initiative. We can make governance easy for our people, if we care.”
