Amotekun, a pleasant gift by S’West
govs — SOYINKA
By Dapo Akinrefon,
Olayinka Ajayi &
James Ogunnaike
L laureate, AGOS—NOBEL
Professor
Wole Soyinka, yesterday,
commended governors of
the South West for initiating
and launching the security
outfit codenamed:
Operation Amotekun.
This came as the Ooni of
Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi,
has described the legal
controversy surrounding
the newly launched outfit
as needless.
Soyinka, who said he had
earlier given up on the
governors, commended
them for listening to the
yearnings of the people.
He said the launch of the
security outfit should be
commended.
His words: “To thank a
number of public-spirited,
humanity-considering
governors in this nation,
who finally responded to
the demand and yearnings
of the citizens and
produced one organisation,
called Amotekun.
“It’s one of the most
unexpected because I had
given up on them; it is
unexpected but at the same
time, a desirable New Year
Present.”
Noise over outfit
needless — Ooni
Oba Ogunwusi, who
fielded questions from
newsmen during the
unveiling of the Royal
African Youth Leadership
Forum, RAYLF, a platform
designed to celebrate
outstanding young
professionals in their
chosen profession, said:
“Amotekun is just a
complementary on the basis
of an already established
forum.
The monarch said:
“People are just causing
rouse unnecessarily about
Amotekun. Just as we have
most breakthrough attacks
against insurgent Boko
Haram by the Nigerian
•Noise over outfit needless — Ooni
•As cleric warns govs against hijack of outfit
and inaction.
Abiodun said: “You are
now public servants and
have joined the league of
politically exposed
people. Your conduct,
utterances and public
personality will now come
under intense public
scrutiny, so, be guided
accordingly.
“To achieve optimally,
you will need to work with
and regard the Ogun
state public servants as
partners and anchors of
the bureaucratic
structures required to
deliver on our
programmes and policies.
You will find in Ogun State
public servants the most
dedicated, efficient and
committed professionals.
They are the inheritors of
the proud legacies of the
Army intimated by local
vigilantes. The same
applies to Amotekun.”
Cleric warns govs
against hijack of outfit
Meanwhile, Bishop of
the Diocese of Ijebu South-
West, Church of Nigeria
(Anglican Communion) Rt.
Rev. Babatunde
Ogunbanwo, has warned
the southwest governors not
to allow “sycophants” to
hijack the outfit.
Rev. Ogunbanwo, who
lauded the governors for
mooting and implementing
the idea, equally urged the
governors to ensure the
security outfit is properly
structured and funded.
The cleric said this at the
10th anniversary address of
the Ijebu South-west
Diocese, held at the
Bishop’s Court, Odogbolu,
Ogun State.
He said: “Let me at this
juncture appreciate the
governors of the southwest
for putting in place
You’re under public scrutiny, Abiodun
tells cabinet members
By James Ogunnaike
A GOVERNOR
BEOKUTA—
Dapo Abiodun of Ogun
State, yesterday, told his
cabinet members to brace
up to the challenges of
their new offices saying
they are under public
scrutiny.
Abiodun, who said this
in his office, at an
orientation programme
organised
for
commissioners and
special advisers, charged
members of the new
cabinet to be role models.
He said they should not
be found wanting in
character, as they will
come under intense
public scrutiny and
people would want to
probe each of their actions
Ogun State public
service. So, with the
combination of political
appointees, who are the
best breeds and the public
servants that rank top in the
country, the stage is now set
for a new Ogun state of our
collective dreams.
“This administration is
arguably the most starstudded
cabinet in the
country: various
expertises, different
background and even
vary but complementary
flavours have been
brought together. As the
captain of this team, I
want to assure you that I
will provide the right
leadership for you to
blossom as individual
stars and for our team to
record achievements that
are greater than the sum
of
individual
accomplishments.”
operation Amotekun. We
thank them for coming
together at least for the first
time they are doing
something together.
“We need to commend
them again because the
people of the Eastern and
Northern parts of the
country want to copy us
now.
“I commend sincerely all
our governors in the
Southwest, but I am
warning them that they
should not allow
sycophants to take over
Amotekun from them.
“We know a lot of those
sycophants in the past that
have not done anything.
The governors should be
aware of sycophants who
are just there to eat, to take
over operation Amotekun.”
While warning against
the recruitment of untrained
personnel for the outfit, he
said: “I also want to advise
that those who will work in
the security outfit should
work with the police. There
should not be disparity,
they should work together
with security outfits such as
the army in achieving the
essence of the operation
Amotekun.
“I will not subscribe to the
incorporation of OPC and
the likes in Amotekun.
What has these set of people
done in the past? They are
just there and making
‘shakara’ all around. How
many of them have gone to
the bush to rescue our
people that are being
kidnapped”.
“All you will see many of
them doing is attending
government a function;
you will see those carrying
staff and cars all around
looking for recognition.”
He stressed that the outfit
must be professionally
organised and structured to
meet up with
contemporary security
challenges, declaring
“anyone who wishes to join
Amotekun should apply
formally and be properly
scrutinized.”
I won’t disappoint
Ekiti despite paucity
of funds — FAYEMI
By Rotimi Ojomoyela
A DO-EKITI—
GOVERNOR
Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti
State, yesterday,
assured that his
administration would
spread development
across all the 133 towns
and other villages, in
fulfillment of the social
contracts he signed
with Ekiti residents, in
spite of the acute
shortage of funds.
He said this at
different towns where
he flagged off the
rehabilitation and
reconstruction of
Agbado-Omuo road,
Ilupeju-Ire-Igbemo-Ijan
road, Oye-Ikun-Otun
road and Aramoko-
Erijiyan-Ikogosi road in
the state.
Fayemi appealed to
the people of the
community where the
projects were sited to
create an enabling
environment for the
contractors handling
the projects to operate
for prompt and timely
delivery of the projects.
He said: “Permit me to
reiterate the resolve of
this administration to
make all parts of the
state accessible by good
roads as enshrined
under the Infrastructure
and Industrial
Development pillar of
the five cardinal points
of this administration.
In our quest to restore
Ekiti values, the
government has
continued to pursue
lofty goals even in the
face of daunting
challenges. We are not
allowing the paucity of
funds to deter us in the
execution of our
programmes.
“The contractors
started some of these
roads being re-awarded
in 2013 during our first
term, but could not
proceed substantially
before my exit. The last
administration did little
work before being
abandoned and that
informed why we
terminated the contracts
and re-awarded them to
the original contractors.
“If you check critically,
all these roads are
critical to the economic
development of our
people. The Ilupeju-Ire
- Ijan road will resolve
the challenge of moving
the Ire Burnt Brick
products from the town
to other parts of the
state and the country at
large.
“Let me assure you
that we won’t allow
paucity of funds to
deter us from achieving
this. We have sourced
for funds to solve many
of our challenges.”
TRAFFIC: Adegboruwa hails
Lagos govt on Lekki-Ikoyi
Link Bridge
L AGOS—HUMAN
rights activist, Mr.
Ebun-olu Adegboruwa,
SAN, yesterday,
commended the Lagos
State government for
decongesting traffic on
Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge.
In a statement, Mr.
Adegboruwa, however,
urged the state
government to eradicate
any form of toll on the
bridge.
He said: “I commend
the Lagos State Govt
and the Lekki
Concession Company,
for the innovation of
electronic payment
system on the Lekki-
Ikoyi Link Bridge.
Predictably, the
electronic payment
system has reduced
traffic congestion
substantially. I passed
through the bridge
today (yesterday) to
and fro, all in less than
three minutes. The
burden of Lekki
dwellers has been
reduced, whilst we wait
to further observe.
“However, we should
move towards total
eradication of any form
of tolling at all, as it has
been established that
the bridge was built
with tax payers’ money.
Having collected the
toll fees for well over a
decade now, the
government should tell
us how much it has so
far generated from the
toll-fee regime, so that
we know where we are.
“Furthermore, the
roundabout at the
landing of the bridge on
Admiralty Way should go
completely so that proper
movement can become
easy for Lekki dwellers
who don’t intend to use
the bridge.
“I commend Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu
and his team and the
MD of LCC, for the good
initiative. We can make
governance easy for our
people, if we care.”
