SummerPrep 2020 Catalog

The fun starts at SummerPrep! SummerPrep, Sandia Prep’s summer program, runs from June 1 - July 10 for students from any school in grades Pre-K through high school. With many academic, tech, art, and sports classes to choose from, students can look forward to learning new skills, crafting talents, and discovering interests with new and old friends alike. Returning favorites include Minecraft, Hogwarts School, Let’s Get Cooking, Archery, and Weird and Wacky Science. Among the new classes this year are Architectural Exploration, Video Game Design, and full theater productions of Moana JR. and Wizard of Oz. Before and after-care programs are available with individualized schedules for each student. Registration opens Monday, February 17.

More Than A Tiara: Princesses<br />

& Fairy Tales<br />

Princesses and fairy tales aren’t just about glitter and<br />

tiaras (although there’s plenty of that in this class)!<br />

Princesses come from all walks of life and are found<br />

in fairy tales around the world and throughout history.<br />

Explore what makes a princess a princess (including<br />

kindness and bravery) and what makes a fairy tale a fairy<br />

tale through art projects, engineering challenges, science<br />

experiments, and storytelling.<br />

Grades K - 2: Period 3 or 4<br />

The Time of Legends<br />

Learn about Medieval times, tales, and classic heroes like<br />

Robin Hood, Merlin, and Arthur. Review the history of<br />

knights, chivalry, and castles through group discussion,<br />

readings, documentaries, and portions of PG and<br />

PG-13 films.<br />

Grades 2 - 7: Period 2<br />

Gods, Myths, and Monsters<br />

Discover ancient worlds full of myths, legends, and<br />

fantastic creatures found in centuries of literature, art,<br />

and film. Includes group reading, reader’s theater,<br />

and viewing fantasy movies. (Resource materials will<br />

contain some scary elements, including portions of<br />

PG-13 films.)<br />

Grades 3 - 7: Period 3<br />

Creative Reading & Writing<br />

Fun ways of putting together words will be presented<br />

with games, art, music, and movement. Learn about<br />

spelling, grammar, phonics, poetry, and prose in solo and<br />

group activities.<br />

NightScares: Writing Horror Stories<br />

Explore the elements of basic storytelling while learning<br />

the key ingredients that create this popular genre of<br />

suspense, mystery, and mayhem. Write short pieces<br />

while reviewing a variety of literature and watch films<br />

containing frightful material that inspires the best scary<br />

writing. (Resource materials will contain some scary<br />

elements, including portions of PG-13 films.)<br />
