Foreword | A Strong UN. A Better World.t is with great pleasure that I welcomeIyou to this edition of the UN CountryTeam (UNCT) Newsletter which,although not the first of its kind, is thefirst one produced under the UN Reformon Development that became effective inJanuary 2019.In siSwati, Sisonkhe means 'we aretogether' and this speaks to our Delivering AsOne (DAO) model adopted in 2008 andreaffirmed in the UN Reform, which saw thefunctions of UN Resident Coordinators beingstrengthened and delinked from those ofUNDP Resident Representatives. Under theReform, five main pillars - One Leadership(Resident Coordinator), One Programme(UNSDCF), One Operation (BusinessOperations Strategy ), One Voice (UNCG) andOne Fund (Common Budgetary Framework)bring the in-country UN family together toassist in the transformation of the lives of theEmaswati, develop and implement policiesthat empower those furthest behind andoverall, deliver more effectively on Agenda2030, national priorities and “our promisefor dignity, prosperity and peace on a healthyplanet” .The UN in Eswatini is resolved anddetermined to remain – as it has been since1970s - a strong, trusted, reliable and verystrategic partner of the people of Eswatini inline with national priorities. This cannot beachieved without efficient, well-coordinatedand effective communications.Communications tools are a majorcomponent of the DAO approach andcontribute towards coherence, effectivenessa n d e f f i c i e n c y o f U N d e ve l o p m e n toperations. Accordingly, in 2019 and withg u i d a n c e f r o m t h e D e v e l o p m e n tCoordination Office (DCO) at Headquarters,Ms Nathalie Ndongo-Seh,UN Resident Coordinatorseveral efforts and initiatives were geared towardsrevamping UN communication tools and engagingwith trust and mutual respect with the media atlarge.UNCT website, www.eswatini.un.org, went livein August 2019 as a common platform that engageswith stakeholders and partners across the world inpromoting sustainable development.The UN also adopted and implemented a robustsocial media strategy to promote the SDGs, includingwhile setting up new UN Eswatini accounts onTwitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flicker and Instagram.These accounts have proved to be very interactiveand, in a very short span, have generated numerousfollowers and strong interest.Despite all these digital platforms and theirimportance, we also ensured to revive and nurtureour relationship with the media, as key stakeholdersin achieving Agenda 2030 of SustainableDevelopment. UN Eswatini supported fourtrainings aimed enhancing the capacity oft r a d i t i o n a l m e d i a , i n c l u d i n g t h e i rprofessionalism, ethics and reporting onhuman rights.The Sisonkhe magazine is one of ourflagship communication tool aimed atreaching out to an even wider audience. I wisht o e x p re s s my a p p re c i a t i o n t o t h eC h a i r p e r s o n o f t h e U N C G , M r. T i mRwabuhemba, UNAIDS Country Director, whohas been a driving force behind the re-launchof this publication. I thank those who havecontributed material towards this edition.I also take this opportunity to thank theRCO Communications Team and the UNCommunications Group (UNCG) for workingtirelessly to ensure that the UN in Eswatini isknown for its professionalism and excellence.The year 2020 marks the beginning of adecade of action and accelerated efforts toachieve the Agenda 2030 targets. This is alsothe year in which the UN, for its 75THanniversary, has launched a global people'sdialogue everywhere with the theme, “TheFuture We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirmingour Collective Commitment to Multilateralism”.These global dialogues will be taking placeonline and offline, as well as in communities inaddition to being packaged and transmitted toglobal discussion platforms.Communication will be a driving forcebehind all these innovative ideas.We welcome all your views.
