ProgramBoardUPDATE Board Update ACRS would like to extend a warm thanks to Mabel Fatialofa-Magalei, Louis Huynh and Peter Yang, whose board terms concluded in December. We thank them for their service and commitment to ACRS and its clients. We also thank the entire board for their leadership, dedication and hard work this past year to ACRS and the communities we serve. Word spread quickly about the grinches who broke into the ACRS Food Bank on Christmas night and again on Dec. 28. But thanks to an outpouring of food and financial donations from all parts of King County, ACRS was able to reopen as regularly scheduled on Jan. 3, 2007 and distribute food to its clients. Each year, the ACRS Food Bank serves nearly 5,000 low-income households, most of whom are elders and children. “People were outraged that someone would actually steal food out of the mouths of people who have so little, people who could be your grandparents or your children,” said ACRS Communications Coordinator Carina A. del Rosario. “They reached out to ACRS and our clients with such care and generosity. It’s been incredibly moving for all of us.” Gary Tang, Aging and Adult Services Director, says that recovery efforts are continuing. The thieves cut through the fence surrounding the ACRS’ Faces of Community, Masks of Tradition benefit auction was tremendously successful because of the leadership of ACRS Board Secretary Mitch Acevedo, who served as Dinner Committee Chair. We thank Mitch for his leadership and vision, and also Board Member Dennis Shiroma, who was extremely active on the Dinner Committee. Board members Charlotte Lin, Rob Harris, Janet Liang, Margaret food bank on 919 S. King St. and broke through the window. “Now we’re dealing with a whole new meaning for the phrase ‘food security,’” Gary said. It’s not only about making sure people who are poor won’t have to worry about having enough to feed their families, but also about making sure the food meant to be distributed to low-income people is stored safely and securely. ACRS is working with Seattle police and Community Action Partnership, a neighborhood public safety program, to investigate the burglary and increase overall safety in the International District. Some residents and businesses reported seeing a person trying to sell rice and other food to neighborhood restaurants. In the meantime, ACRS will be installing donated security equipment, improving the fence and repairing equipment with money that has been contributed since the break-ins. 11 Lu, Kareen Queen, Kim Tran, Fernando Vega, and Sun Yi helped engage their employers and introduce new people to ACRS’ work and mission. Nathan Alexander, Cornell Cebrian, Stan Dahlin, and Anita Rodgers attended, made donations or contributed items for the auction. Thanks to all of them for garnering more support for ACRS.
